Assessing the impact of COVID-19 on liver cancer management (CERO-19)

2021

[Background & Aims] The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has posed unprecedented challenges to healthcare systems and it may have heavily impacted patients with liver cancer (LC). Herein, we evaluated whether the schedule of LC screening or procedures has been interrupted or delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The expression of HSP27 is associated with poor clinical outcome in intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma.

2007

Abstract Background The heat shock proteins (HSPs) 27-kDa (HSP27) and 72-kDa (HSP72), are ubiquitous chaperone molecules inducible in cells exposed to different stress conditions. Increased level of HSPs are reported in several human cancers, and found to be associated with the resistance to some anticancer treatments and poor prognosis. However, there is no study of the relationship between HSPs expression and patient's prognosis in intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (IHCCA). In this exploratory retrospective study, we investigated the expressions of HSP27 and HSP72 as potential prognostic factors in IHCCA. Methods Thirty-one paraffin-embedded samples were analyzed by immunohistochemical meth…

The associated expression of Maspin and Bax proteins as a potential prognostic factor in intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma

2006

Abstract Background Maspin, a member of the serpin family, is a suppressor of tumor growth, an inhibitor of angiogenesis and an inducer of apoptosis. Maspin induces apoptosis by increasing Bax, a member of the Bcl-2 family of apoptosis-regulating proteins. In this exploratory study, we investigated the associated expression of Maspin and Bax proteins as a potential prognostic factor in intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (IHCCA). Methods Twenty-two paraffin-embedded samples were analyzed by immunohistochemical methods using Maspin, Bax and CD34 antibodies. Maspin was scored semiquantitatively (HSCORE). Apoptosis was assessed using an antibody against cleaved caspase-3. Results The strong relati…

The role of sarcopenia in patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma: Prognostic marker or hyped parameter?

2019

BACKGROUND & AIMS Sarcopenia has emerged as a prognostic parameter in numerous cancer entities. Current research favours its role as a determining factor for overall survival (OS) in patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC); however, it is unclear whether sarcopenia is a truly independent survival predictor if combined with established prognostic factors. METHODS Between 1997-2018, 417 patients with histopathologically confirmed ICC were referred to our centre, of whom 293 were included in this study. Cross-sectional imaging, laboratory examinations and histopathological reports were retrospectively analysed. Psoas muscle index (PMI) as easy-to-measure marker of sarcopenia was ca…

Extended resection of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma: A retrospective single-center cohort study

2019

Abstract Background For complete removal of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC), extended resection is often necessary. Information on the influence of visceral or vascular extension, extended resection, or postoperative morbidity on survival is scarce. The aim of this study was to show the impact of an aggressive surgical attitude on morbidity, mortality, and long-term outcome. Materials and methods All explorations at a high volume tertiary center between January 2008 and June 2018 with histological proof of ICC were included in this retrospective cohort study. The primary outcome was the extent of resection, secondary outcomes were postoperative morbidity, and their influence on overal…

Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Nonhepatocellular Malignancies in Chronic Liver Disease.

2021

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common liver malignancy associated with chronic liver disease. Nonhepatocellular malignancies may also arise in the setting of chronic liver disease. The imaging diagnosis of non-HCC malignancies may be challenging. Non-HCC malignancies in patients with chronic liver disease most commonly include intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma and combined hepatocellular-cholangiocarcinoma, and less commonly hepatic lymphomas and metastases. On MR imaging, non-HCC malignancies often demonstrate a targetoid appearance, manifesting as rim arterial phase hyperenhancement, peripheral washout, central delayed enhancement, and peripheral restricted diffusion. When apply…
