This contribution is about the enhancement of the tangible and intangible cultural heritage and acknowledgement of environmental sustainability principles. It deals with the relationship between new ways of conceiving urban environments and new strategies for urban regeneration in northern and southern Mediterranean cities. Our main research hypothesis will show how the cultural heritage is now the force for change in Mediterranean cities, and involves stakeholders, craftsmen, local inhabitants and consumers. The Intervention on urban fabric and open spaces in the historical city. The article describes the restoration process of Palermo’s historical centre. The process has been discontinuous and fragmented, so that presently, extremely degraded urban areas still coexist with highly desirable areas characterized by first-rate restoration. Palermo’s experience with urban revitalization and development of an impoverished historical city centre demonstrates the need for urban planning that is systematically supported by effective public policies and that never loses sight of preserving the soul of the city.

In the always surprising capital of Palermo, a hidden garden of opuntia indica relics has been discovered again after decades of oblivion, due to the work and the unceased promotion made by a huge group of citizens, students, teachers and volunteers. In this 9 hectares area owned by the regional government of Sicily since a long time ago (1963), the remains of a dense opuntia plantation characterizes a green forgotten area, casually survived to the building growth of Palermo. C'è una ragione fondata, ancorché il richiamo "modaiolo" sia forte e ricorrente. Cercherò di dimostrarlo provando, contestualmente, a rintracciare una via italiana al paesaggio che origina dagli studi di architettura e che riguarda l'intero ambito del progetto, quale che sia la dimensione la natura la configurazione del luogo di cui si prevede la trasformazione.

The city of Salerno and the expansion that underwent in the 1920s in order to respond to the urban expansion following the demographic increase that occurred at the beginning of the century will be the topics discussed in this paper.
