Investigation on four centuripe vases (late 3rd-2nd cent. B.C.) by portable X-ray fluorescence and total reflectance-FTIR

Abstract Four Centuripe vases dated back to the late 3rd-2nd centuries B.C. were analysed using imaging under visible and ultra-violet illumination as well as complementary non-invasive and non-destructive portable X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) and Total Reflectance – Fourier Transform InfraRed (TR-FTIR) spectroscopies. The vases are of great importance since they represent a rare expression of the Hellenistic vase painting. Four specimens, a “pyxis”, a “lebes gamikos” and two “lekanides” decorated with figures of different type, are exhibited in the Antonino Salinas Archaeological Museum in Palermo-Italy. La Casa a Peristilio 1 di Monte Iato è una delle più lussuose e meglio pubblicate abitazioni ellenistiche dell’intera Sicilia. Il problema più dibattuto che la concerne riguarda la sua cronologia. Diversi studiosi, concentrando la loro attenzione su differenti aspetti (membrature architettoniche, cronologia dei rinvenimenti ceramici o considerazioni di ordine storico), hanno discusso la datazione della casa agli anni attorno al 300 a.C., suggerendo una cronologia più tarda. Inside the Thompson laboratory during the “cerebellar years” and the continuing cerebellar story

This paper is based on the talk by one of the authors (DL) given at the symposium for the retirement of RF Thompson (RF Thompson: A bridge between 20th and 21st century neuroscience). We first make some informal observations of the historical times and research conditions in the Thompson laboratory when the cerebellum was found to play a critical role in eye lid classical conditioning, the "cerebellar years". These conditions influenced our collaborative international program on the phenomenon known as "transfer of training" or "savings". In this study, we tested the validity of the Italian version of the Prejudice Against Asylum Seekers Scale (PAAS), which measures classic and modern prejudice toward asylum seekers. A sample of 740 participants (227 males and 513 females, aged 18-67) completed the scale. The results were consistent with the original 2-factor model providing an acceptable fit for the data. This study, however, suggests taking out two items from the scale. The two correlated factors showed significant associations with right-wing authoritarianism, social dominance orientation, and national identification. Orientation and Alignment Echoes

We present one of the simplest classical systems featuring the echo phenomenon---a collection of randomly oriented free rotors with dispersed rotational velocities. Following excitation by a pair of time-delayed impulsive kicks, the mean orientation or alignment of the ensemble exhibits multiple echoes and fractional echoes. We elucidate the mechanism of the echo formation by the kick-induced filamentation of phase space, and provide the first experimental demonstration of classical alignment echoes in a thermal gas of ${\mathrm{CO}}_{2}$ molecules excited by a pair of femtosecond laser pulses.

After a brief survey on the previous studies on the Sicilian domestic architecture of the hellenistic and Roman periods, this paper questions the idea of a continuous development of the Greek house's central space, from the simple court to the peristyle, as well as the opposition between “centripetal”and “axial” (i.e. the Greek peristyle house and the Roman atrium house). This rigid distinction doesn't take in account the existence of an hybrid form of the court that doesn't fit well in these comfortable cathegories: the “tetrastylon”. L’attività edilizia a destinazione pubblica fra i Severi e i Soldatenkaiser: continuità e trasformazioni

Un confronto fra le principali iniziative edilizie a Roma nel periodo severiano (193-235 d.C.) e in quello immediatamente successivo dei "Soldatenkaiser" (235-284 d.C.) rivela che gli elementi di continuità superarono di gran lunga quelli di frattura fra le due epoche. Ciò conferma come, in accordo con gli orientamenti attuali degli studi, l'età dei "Soldatenkaiser" non sia stata una reale epoca di crisi.

The paper gathers and analyzes the data useful for reconstructing the reception and the legacy of Augustus’ image in Sicilian civic contexts. Beside the four portrait heads from Syracuse, Centuripe, Tyndaris, Taormina, several sculptural, epigraphic and numismatic testimonia are considered from the above-quoted cities and other Sicilian sites. Except for few more ancient inscriptions/statues(?) (Syracuse) and coins (Segesta), a key moment in the response by the local civic communities to the imperial model is around Augustus’ visit of 21 B.C. and in the immediate period after his death.
