On the Trustworthiness of Error-Correcting Codes
2007
The use of error-correcting codes protects data against accidental or intentional errors, but to what extent can a decoded message be trusted? To answer this question, one has to take the role of the receiver. First, the maximum number of errors Lambda acceptable for decoding is fixed. With the weight distribution, the probability of false decoding can be calculated, conditioned on such a Lambda-bounded strategy. This probability is a monotonously increasing function in the channel error probability p and in the maximum number of accepted errors Lambda. Therefore, pure error detection is more trustworthy than error correction. Moreover, for sufficiently small p, codes with the lexicographic…
Analog joint source-channel Multiple Description coding scheme over AWGN parallel channels
2011
We propose a low complexity analog joint source channel coding Multiple Description (MD) scheme for transmitting the symbols of a Gaussian source across a pair of independent AWGN channels. The outputs of these channels have each a separated receiver, whereas a third receiver has both outputs available. At the transmitter side, a pair of bandwidth-reduction analog mappings are used for joint source-channel coding. The presented scheme has the inherent advantage over digital MD schemes based on separation, that coding and decoding can be performed by using a single-letter (or symbol), a strategy that is very suitable for applications where latency originated by the digital compression and th…

Constancy and evolution of an engaged writing : the work of Carmen de Burgos, journalist, essayist and novelist
2016
Carmen de Burgos died in 1932, leaving behind a considerable amount of written material: thousands of articles published in different newspapers, essays, novels and hundreds of “novelas cortas”. The works and the memory of this women’s rights activist were doomed to oblivion during Franco’s dictatorship. This thesis aims to rediscover and analyse these works from its various perspectives. We have been looking for the constant trends but also the evolutions. Carmen de Burgos has indeed evolved in her conception of the woman’s role and of the rights she had to acquire. In the early stages of her fight, she had been mainly focusing on the acquisition of equalitarian legal and social rights. Sh…
Legal Norms Against the Italian Mafia
2016
Legislation expressly aimed at combating mafia-type crimes in the Italian criminal system has long represented a specific and distinctive set of rules, comprising provisions of criminal law, procedural criminal law and penitentiary law, and including provisions of administrative and civil law of a more preventive kind. However, the law constitutes only one aspect of the complex Italian anti-mafia policy, which indeed results from the combination of several factors, such as human losses, political choices, legislative solutions, evolving case law and reactions of the civil society. In the international arena, among the multiple actors engaged at various levels in the fight against organised …

Employees’ Acceptance and Involvement in Accordance with Codes of Conduct – Chinese Business Behaviour vs. Western Compliance Management Systems
2015
Abstract More stringent anti-corruption and anti-bribery laws in the US, Europe and PR China as well as the current political anti-corruption-campaign in China force Western globally active companies to implement Code of Conducts at their subsidiaries worldwide – thus also in China. There are mixed results of existing academic research on the impact of Codes of Conduct regarding ethical behaviour of the employees in connection with these Codes. The purpose of this study is to gain a better understanding of the motivation and intention of employees to accept and act according to a local Code of Conduct. This research is conducted in a cross-cultural setting (PR China, Germany, Austria) by ta…
A simple algorithm to evaluate the local symmetry at each point of a closed contour
1995
In this work, contour symmetry is evaluated as a numeric feature for each point of the shape outline, using only the positions of a local vicinity of points. A measure is defined, named Local Symmetric Deficiency (LSD), so that the lower this quantity is, the higher the symmetry will be in the local region considered. This approach is simpler than related previous ones both from a conceptual point of view and for its implementation, since it is reduced just to a suitable manipulation of the Freeman chain code of the curve studied. Its computational cost is very low and it has the advantages of a parallel algorithm, since values for LSD can be computed for each point independently.
ℓ-distant Hamiltonian walks in Cartesian product graphs
2009
Abstract We introduce and study a generalisation of Hamiltonian cycles: an l-distant Hamiltonian walk in a graph G of order n is a cyclic ordering of its vertices in which consecutive vertices are at distance l. Conditions for a Cartesian product graph to possess such an l-distant Hamiltonian walk are given and more specific results are presented concerning toroidal grids.
