Graphical THD minimization procedure for single phase five-level converters
2017
This paper proposes two graphycal procedure to mitigate h harmonics and to minimize the total harmonic distortion (THD), respectively. The paper considers a five-level inverter and fundamental frequency modulation: it computes the two switching angles able to reduce low order harmonics and able to minimize the THD. Simulation results are obtained and, in order to validate the proposed procedure, an experimental prototype is built and experimental results are carried out. The comparison between simulation and experimental results confirms the accuracy of the proposed graphycal procedure. It is shown that the switching angles to mitigate the third-fifth and the third-fifth-seventh harmonics e…
A trace partitioned Gray code forq-ary generalized Fibonacci strings
2015
AbstractWe provide a trace partitioned Gray code for the set of q-ary strings avoiding a pattern constituted by k consecutive equal symbols. The definition of this Gray code is based on two different constructions, according to the parity of q. This result generalizes, and is based on, a Gray code for binary strings avoiding k consecutive 0's.
Two Reflected Gray Code-Based Orders on Some Restricted Growth Sequences
2014
We consider two order relations: that induced by the m-ary reflected Gray code and a suffix partitioned variation of it. We show that both of them when applied to some sets of restricted growth sequences still yield Gray codes. These sets of sequences are: subexcedant and ascent sequences, restricted growth functions and staircase words. In particular, we give the first suffix partitioned Gray codes for restricted growth f unctions and ascent sequences; these latter sequences code various combinatorial classes as interval orders, upper triangular matrices without zero rows and zero columns whose non-negative integer entries sum up to n, and certain pattern-avoiding permutations. For each Gr…
Parallel Algorithms for Listing Well-Formed Parentheses Strings
1998
We present two cost-optimal parallel algorithms generating the set of all well-formed parentheses strings of length 2n with constant delay for each generated string. In our first algorithm we generate in lexicographic order well-formed parentheses strings represented by bitstrings, and in the second one we use the representation by weight sequences. In both cases the computational model is based on an architecture CREW PRAM, where each processor performs the same algorithm simultaneously on a different set of data. Different processors can access the shared memory at the same time to read different data in the same or different memory locations, but no two processors are allowed to write i…
Growth rates of late Miocene corals from Crete (Greece)
2006
Modern scleractinian corals are classical components of marine shallow warm water ecosystems. Their occurrence and diversity patterns in the geological record have been widely used to infer past climates and environmental conditions. Coral skeletal composition data reflecting the nature of the coral environment are often affected by diagenetic alteration. Ghost structures of annual growth rhythms are, however, often well preserved in the transformed skeleton. We show that these relicts represent a valuable source of information on growth conditions of fossil corals. Annual growth bands were measured in massive hemispherical Porites of late Miocene age from the island of Crete (Greece) that …
Gene silencing induced by oxidative DNA base damage: association with local decrease of histone H4 acetylation in the promoter region
2010
Oxidized DNA bases, particularly 7,8-dihydro-8-oxoguanine (8-oxoG), are endogenously generated in cells, being a cause of carcinogenic mutations and possibly interfering with gene expression. We found that expression of an oxidatively damaged plasmid DNA is impaired after delivery into human host cells not only due to decreased retention in the transfected cells, but also due to selective silencing of the damaged reporter gene. To test whether the gene silencing was associated with a specific change of the chromatin structure, we determined the levels of histone modifications related to transcriptional activation (acetylated histones H3 and H4) or repression (methylated K9 and K27 of the hi…
Molecular hydrogen (H2) mixing ratio and stable isotopic composition (dD) at the Cabauw tall tower in the Netherlands (2008-2012)
2016
Measurements of the stable isotopic composition (dD(H2) or dD) of atmospheric molecular hydrogen (H2) are a useful addition to mixing ratio (X(H2)) measurements for understanding the atmospheric H2 cycle. dD datasets published so far consist mostly of observations at background locations. We complement these with observations from the Cabauw tall tower at the CESAR site, situated in a densely populated region of the Netherlands. Our measurements show a large anthropogenic influence on the local H2 cycle, with frequently occurring pollution events that are characterized by X(H2) values that reach up to 1 ppm and low dD values. An isotopic source signature analysis yields an apparent source s…
Simple method for limiting delay of optimized interleavers for turbo-codes
2000
An iterative interleaver growth algorithm is extended to allow the delay and required memory of designed interleavers to be halved with negligible performance loss. The original algorithm is efficient for two-component parallel concatenated turbo-codes with given constituent encoders that are optimum with regard to a cost function satisfying some mild conditions. However, it is only actually optimum if the selected set of patterns is representative of low-weight turbo-codewords. The new interleaver uses all terminating error patterns having an input weight not greater than a fixed IWX and single-coder output weight not greater than WX is proposed.

Xanastur (brachiopoda, stringocephalacea) nomen novum pro Xana García-Alcalde, 1972 (non Xana kurdjumov, 1917, hymenoptera, hexapoda)
2021
Garcia-Alcalde (1972) proposed the new genus Xana (type species Xana bubo Garcia-Alcalde, 1972) for a terebratulid brachiopod included in the superfamily Stringocephalacea from the Lower Devonian of the Cantabrian Mountains (Northwestern Spain). In an email message sent on April 3, 2018, the entomologist Dr. Eduardo I. Faundez, from the Patagonia Institute, Magallanes University, Chile, warned the author that Xana was a name previously used by Kurdjumov (1917) for a hymenopteran genus. Xana Garcia-Alcalde, 1972 would be so a later homonym of Xana Kurdjumov, 1917. In accordance with articles 52.3, 52.4, 53.2, 60.3 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN) (2000), it is prop…
