Mediterranean Diet and Age-Related Cognitive Decline
2015
IMPORTANCE: Oxidative stress and vascular impairment are believed to partly mediate age-related cognitive decline, a strong risk factor for development of dementia. Epidemiologic studies suggest that a Mediterranean diet, an antioxidant-rich cardioprotective dietary pattern, delays cognitive decline, but clinical trial evidence is lacking. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether a Mediterranean diet supplemented with antioxidant-rich foods influences cognitive function compared with a control diet. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Parallel-group randomized clinical trial of 447 cognitively healthy volunteers from Barcelona, Spain (233 women [52.1%]; mean age, 66.9 years), at high cardiovascular…
Designing ICTs for Users with Mild Cognitive Impairment: A Usability Study
2020
Background: Research has supported the cost-effectiveness of cognitive training tools enhanced by information and communication technologies (ICT) in several populations, including individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and age-related cognitive decline. The implementation of ICTs in this population, however, is sometimes challenging to their cognitive and age characteristics. Ultimately, this might compromise the effectiveness of ICT-enhanced therapies in this population. The aim of this study is to test the usability and acceptability of a European project prototype for elderly care, in an attempt to explore the ICT design needs of users with MCI. Methods: Participants were 28 i…
Associative and implicit memory performance as a function of cognitive reserve in elderly adults with and without mild cognitive impairment
2016
AbstractThis study aims to analyze implicit and explicit memory performance as a function of cognitive reserve (CR) in a healthy control group (N = 39) and a mild cognitive impairment (MCI) group (N = 37). Both groups were subdivided into high and low cognitive reserve, and were asked to complete an explicit and implicit associative recognition tasks. The results showed that the control group was able to learn both tasks (η2 = .19, p < .0001), and the high CR group fared better (η2 = .06, p < .05). The MCI sample, conversely, was unable to learn the implicit relationship, and showed very little learning on the explicit association task. Participants diagnosed with MCI showed little pl…

The authors wish to thank the PREDIMED-Plus participants and staff for their engagement, as well as to the primary care centers involved in the study. We also thank the Cerca Programme of the Generalitat de Catalunya, and the CIBEROBN, CIBERESP and CIBERDEM initiatives of Instituto de Salud Carlos III in Spain, and the collaborators in the PRIME consortium for helpful input. The first version of the present article has been published in the public repository Research Square as a preprint publication of our work (44). We particularly thank Stephanie Nishi for her assistance with manuscript language revision.
Motivation and metacognition: more than an interrelation
2001
The aim of this article is to reflect on the possible relation between metacognition and motivation. Some aspects such as causality, locus of control or success expectancy can be conditioned by the metacognitive knowledge of students. We also establish a parallel between the development of metacognition and the characteristics of the kind of motivation in students. We incorporate this parallel with the learning styles that the students can apply in their studies.
ROC parameters in item and context recognition
2007
Conflicting theories argue that recognition is achieved either by familiarity exclusively, or by a mixtu- re of familiarity and recollection. We explore in three experiments the goodness of fit of both positions to experimental data in which context information is manipulated. In Experiments 1 and 2, we explore the availability of context information in recognition, testing the focus stimulus, its context, and their associative relation. In Experiment 3, participants were confronted with a plurality task in an attempt to force them to use the peripheral information in recognition. The results show that people acquire specific associative information, and although overall recognition perform…
L'impacte de L. Kohlberg en la Psicología Contemporània (1989-1997)
1997
L. Kohlberg has been the most significant single figure in recent decades in the field of Moral Psychology. This essay aims to determine objectively the impact his work had, through an analysis of all his works and the extent to which this author is quoted, through the Social Science Citation Index. The analysis shows the progressive implantation of L. Kohlberg in the international scientific community during the period of years studied (1989-September 1997), the immense visibility of some of his works, the growing impact on modern literature and the number of important authors who quote him nowadays. RESUMEN La figura de L. Kohlberg ha sido la más destacada en las décadas anteriores en el …
Implicit relational effects in associative recognition
2013
We study the contribution of implicit relatedness to associative recognition in two experiments. In the first experiment, we showed an implicit improvement in recognition when the stimulus elements of each word pair shared common letters and they were unpaired at test. Moreover, when asked to study the stimuli under divided attention, recollection was affected, but not the effect of perceptual familiarity. In a second experiment, we replicated the effect of divided attention, and we showed that it did not affect the familiarity measured by a choice test at the item level. Overall, both experiments indicated that familiarity acts by unitizing the association, and not simply by establishing s…
Psicología de la música y audición musical. Distintas aproximaciones
2015
1998
The object of this study, after explaining the meaning of the term empathy and mentioning the different existing types, is to establish the connection between different education styles and the empathic capacity of Spanish adolescents. Love, control and hostility are the different education styles taken into account. To this purpose 349 adolescents, 175 girls and 174 boys between the ages of 12 and 17, are evaluated. During the academic year 95-96, all these students were studying their respective years from the 8th year of General Basic Education, to the 3rd year of Higher Basic Education (Bachillerato), in government funded private schools. The selection made was carried out by the conglo…
