Finger movements induced by transcranial magnetic stimulation change with hand posture, but not with coil position
1998
We attempted to map the representations of movements in 2 normal subjects by delivering five transcranial magnetic stimuli (TMS) with a focal coil to each of a grid of positions over the primary motor area (M1). Isometric forces were recorded from the contralateral index finger. Maps were made with the hand in a semiflexed “neutral” position, and with the thumb and index finger opposed in a “pincer” grip. The electromyogram (EMG) was monitored to ensure relaxation. The wrist was immobilized. In the neutral position, TMS at almost all positions produced abduction. Flexion was produced in the pincer position. Thus, while sensitive to changes in posture, TMS mapping may not be sensitive to the…
Rapid Musculoskeletal Magnetic Resonance Imaging Using Integrated Parallel Acquisition Techniques (IPAT) - Initial Experiences
2003
Purpose To investigate the feasibility of using multiple receiver coil elements for time saving integrated parallel imaging techniques (iPAT) in traumatic musculoskeletal disorders. Material and methods 6 patients with traumatic derangements of the knee, ankle and hip underwent MR imaging at 1.5 T. For signal detection of the knee and ankle, we used a 6-channel body array coil that was placed around the joints, for hip imaging two 4-channel body array coils and two elements of the spine array coil were combined for signal detection. All patients were investigated with a standard imaging protocol that mainly consisted of different turbo spin-echo sequences (PD-, T (2)-weighted TSE with and w…

Electromechanical Numerical Analysis of an Air-Core Pulsed Alternator via Equivalent Network Formulation
2017
In this paper, the numerical analysis on an air-core pulsed alternator is presented. Since compulsators are characterized by very fast electromechanical transients, their accurate analysis requires strong coupling between the equations governing the electrical and the mechanical behaviors. The device is investigated by using a dedicated numerical code capable to take into account eddy currents, compensating windings, as well as the excitation/control circuits. Furthermore, the code is capable of modeling centrifugal forces and vibrations acting on the shaft due to electric and mechanical unbalances or to misalignments of the shaft from its centered position. This makes the code a very power…
Platería morisca de obra de hilo (siglo XVI)
2019
The article discusses twenty tests performed by Valencian artisans to become masters of ―wire work‖ between the years 1508 and 1538. Considered minor works in the area of silver smithery, these pieces of jewellery are characterized by superimposed wire decoration. A peculiarity of these tests was that the pieces were not drawn on paper (the common practice for record-keeping purposes), but rather blackened and then stamped on- to paper. As a result, life-size and dated imprints have been preserved. as have the names of the artisans. They were silver workers whose biographies are known, all of them Christian; many of them worked in the Tossal district of Valencia, next to the M usli…
The ‘grave of the Court Pit’, A rediscovered Bronze Age tomb from Carchemish
2014
This paper examines the British Museum unpublished records related to an Early Bronze (EB) Age pithos burial uncovered a century ago in the Inner Town at Carchemish. The grave, cursorily cited and variously dated (Chalcolithic, EB or even LBA) in the final reports, was described in some detail by Hogarth and Thompson; a precise dating is, however, possible today thanks to the information of paramount importance given by T. E. Lawrence who identified and took a picture of the associated finds, which was recently rediscovered in the Carchemish Archives. The pithos can be now ascribed to the third quarter of the third millennium BC and helps to confirm the recent theory according to which the …
La serie monetal ‘Bes/palmera’. Una pseudo-ceca en la Hispania Ulterior
2018
This paper aims at studying an unknown coinage from the Iberian Peninsula depicting the Phoenician god Bes on the obverse and a palm tree on the reverse. Due to their imitative characteristics, these coins are attributed to a pseudo-mint located in Hispania Ulterior in the 1st century BC in relation with a dearth of cash in some areas of actual Andalusia. With parallels to the phenomenon of the pseudo-mint of Ebusus, settled in Pompeii, new hypotheses are suggested as regards the situation in Hispania Ulterior, where all the finds originate. The circulation of Ebusian coinage in Campania led to its imitation in Pompeii. We conclude that a similar phenomenon occurred here, although such an a…
Morphological and molecular characterization of three new parastenocarididae (Copepoda: Harpacticoida) from caves in Southern Italy
2020
We describe three new parastenocaridid: Cottarellicaris sanctiangeli Bruno & Cottarelli sp. nov., Stammericaris vincentimariae Bruno & Cottarelli sp. nov. and Proserpinicars specincola Bruno & Cottarelli sp. nov., collected in the pools of five different caves located in Calabria (Southern Italy). We conducted a phylogenetic analysis based on the mitochondrial COI and ribosomal 18S sequences of C. sanctiangeli sp. nov. and S. vincentimariae sp. nov., and of four more species of Stammericaris and one Proserpinicaris available from literature. Based on the molecular study, the specimens of C. sanctiangeli sp. nov. are clearly separated from the species belonging to the closely-rel…
Illumination Correction on MR Images
2006
Objective. An important artifact corrupting Magnetic Resonance Images is the rf inhomogeneity, also called bias artifact. This anomaly produces an abnormal illumination fluctuation on the image, due to variations of the device magnetic field. This artifact is particularly strong on images acquired with a device specialized on upper and lower limbs due to their coil configuration. A method based on homomorphic filtering aimed to suppress this artifact was proposed by Guillemaud. This filter has two faults: it doesnt provide an indication about the cutoff frequency (cf) and introduces another illumination artifact on the edges of the foreground. This work is an improvement to this method because i…
Differential Leakage Factor in Electrical Machines Equipped with Asymmetrical Multiphase Windings: a General Investigation
2019
This paper presents an investigation in terms of degree of unbalance and leakage factor of electrical machines equipped with multiphase windings. The analysis has been carried out through 4800 combinations between slots/poles/phases/layers, analyzing the variability of the leakage factor for each condition and determining the optimal region for its minimization. The obtained results demonstrate that the leakage factor could be considerably reduced with the adoption of slightly asymmetrical windings, which represent a favorable option during the early design stage of electrical machines.
