Summary Background Ifosfamide has important activity in pretreated soft tissue sarcomas (STS), and recent data support a clinically significant dose-response relationship for this agent. Administration by continuous infusion and hematopoietic support have rendered dose intensification regimens possible by reducing both hematologic and non-hematologic toxicities. We have determined the effect of delayed addition of G-CSF after chemotherapy on PBPC mobilization in a group of 30 patients with high risk breast cancer (HRBC) undergoing standard chemotherapy followed by high-dose chemotherapy (HDCT) and autologous SCT. Patients received FAC chemotherapy every 21 days followed by G-CSF at doses of 5 microg/kg/day starting on day +15 (groups 1 and 2) or +8 (group 3) after chemotherapy. PBPC collections were performed daily starting after 4 doses of G-CSF and continued until more than 2.5 x 10(6) CD34+ cells had been collected. The present study was designed to investigate in vivo immunomodulatory properties of hematopoietic growth factors. The influence on the activation of cytokine synthesis and on the expression of surface antigens associated with cellular activation of G-CSF or GM-CSF was investigated in cancer patients receiving these factors. One single dose of growth factor was administered to patients with bladder cancer (G-CSF group) or small cell lung cancer (GM-CSF group) before chemotherapy. A low-pressure reservoir for urine is created by antimesenteric splitting and side-to-side anastomosis of the rectosigmoid, the expectation being to obtain better continence rates and better protection of the upper tract than are achievable by ureterosigmoidostomy. Between 1990 and August 1993 the procedure was performed in 73 patients (59 adults and 14 children) whose mean age was 43.5 years. The indications were malignancy (n = 55), bladder exstrophy/epispadias (n = 14), trauma (n = 3), and sinus urogenitalis (n = 1). Freshly isolated human mononuclear cells (5 × 106) were incubated in a Dexter-type long-term bone marrow culture (LTBMC) system to study myelosuppressive effects of cytosine arabinoside (Ara-C) in combination with granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) or interleukin 3 (IL-3). Differential counts (dc) of the nonadherent cell (nac) populations, starting with culture initiation, were performed weekly. We assessed whether creation of the Mainz pouch I, which requires 24 to 36 cm. of terminal ileum and 12 cm. of ascending colon including the ileocecal valve, leads to metabolic disturbances.In 137 patients the levels of vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, B12, D and E, folic and bile acids, ammonia, and intracorpuscular vitamin B12 and folic acid were evaluated and a red blood count was performed. Background: Tuber aestivum Vittad., known as black summer truffle, represents high-value food especially used as garnishment in nouvelle cuisine. The aim of this study was to investigate on the viable microbial populations associated with T. aestivum ascomata collected in different sites of Sicily and one locality of Umbria (Italy).
 Methods: The ripe ascomata of black summer truffles were collected from Central Italy. Cell densities of spoilage bacteria, fecal indicators, potential pathogens, yeasts, and molds were analyzed. Statistical analysis was conducted with XLSTAT software.
