Information transfer determined by association of neighbours in European bee-eater (Merops apiaster) colonies

2007

The Information Centre Hypothesis (ICH) and the Two-Strategies Hypothesis (TSH) predict that foraging success is enhanced by information exchanged among individuals within a colony or roost. Nest location within a colony may be critical in this regard, as individuals with abundant, nearby neighbours likely have greater access to information regarding a new food resource than relatively isolated breeders. To determine how the availability of neighbours influences information transfer, we quantified foraging success in a population of European bee-eaters (Merops apiaster) provided with a honey bee (Apis mellifera) hive as a new food resource. To quantify potential information transfer we deve…

The Abruzzo-Apulian (Central and Southeastern Italy) fossil fauna, new challenges for paleontologists and paleobiogeographers

2012

The Abruzzo-Apulian Platform was an endemic Neogene paleobioprovince. Its relics can be found at the south-east of the Italian Peninsula. Geological and paleontological traces of this past land crop out both in the central Apennines, Maiella (Scontrone fossiliferous site), as well as in the Gargano Promontory. The Scontrone paleofauna -Scontrone is placed on the southern borderline of the Abruzzo National Park, Central-Southern Apennine. The bone-bearing sediments are coastaltidal-flat calcarenites stratigraphically dated to the Lower Tortonian. They yielded remains of terrestrial mammals, which include the bizarre ruminant Hoplitomeryx and the giant insectivore Deinogalerix, of a large ter…

Editorial: CSF1R, CSF-1, and IL-34, a "menage a trois" conserved across vertebrates.

2010

Abstract Editorial discusses the perspectives opened by the recently discovered IL-34, its conservation across species in the biology of the cytokine CSF-1, and identification of a new CSF-1R ligand that could together account for the well-known heterogeneity of monocytes.

Postcolonial Intersections: Transnational Women Voices from Minor Italy

2017

The rising corpus of Italian postcolonial literature, mainly by women writers originally from the Horn of Africa, is urging Italian letters to engage with other contemporary transnational productions, thus challenging the notion of national canons and vertical power relations, in favor of a writing seeking for horizontal, minor connections unmediated by the center, as suggested by Francoise Lionnet and Shu-mei Shih, whose work on Minor Transnationalism draws from Deleuze & Guattari and Edouard Glissant. As a case of point, the article offers a reflection on Ubax Cristina Ali Farah's narratives and their use of language.

Neuronal intestinal dysplasia

1987

Findings in 23 children with neuronal intestinal dysplasia (NID) are presented. Twelve children had Hirschsprung's disease that masked the existence of proximal NID. In all cases the diagnosis was established by histological-histochemical examination. Amelioration of symptoms by conservative treatment alone was achieved in 4 children; in 13 cases colostomy was necessary. In 6 patients colon resection was performed: 2 suffered from both colitis and obstruction; the other 4 were treated for obstruction, multiple perforations, persistant adynamia of the left colon, and fistulation. In 9 patients the colostomy was closed. Four of 6 children who did not have sonographic confirmation of motility …

Endomicroscopy of Colon Pathology

2007

Colorectal cancer is still one of the leading causes of cancer-related death in the Western world. Screening colonoscopy is widely accepted as the gold standard for early diagnosis of cancer. The prognosis for patients with colonic neoplasms is strictly dependent on the depth of infiltration and therefore depends on early detection of pre-invasive and neoplastic changes. Early detection makes it possible to cure the patient by means of immediate endoscopic resection.

Granulocyte–Macrophage Colony-Stimulating Factor Is Essential for Normal Wound Healing

2006

Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) is a multipotent growth factor, which plays an important role during the process of wound healing. In clinical settings it has occasionally been employed in the treatment of cutaneous wounds of diverse etiologies. In a previous study, we have shown the positive influence of GM-CSF on full thickness excisional wounds in transgenic mice overexpressing GM-CSF in the basal layer of the epidermis. Direct GM-CSF action as well as indirect processes through the induction of secondary cytokines were proposed to contribute towards the beneficial effects. In this study, we analyzed the process of wound healing in transgenic mice overexpressing…

Repeated courses of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: clinical and biological results from a prospective multic…

2011

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) induces a transient mobilization of hematopoietic progenitor cells from bone marrow to peripheral blood. Our aim was to evaluate safety of repeated courses of G-CSF in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), assessing disease progression and changes in chemokine and cytokine levels in serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Twenty-four ALS patients entered an open-label, multicenter trial in which four courses of G-CSF and mannitol were administered at 3-month intervals. Levels of G-CSF were increased after treatment in the serum and CSF. Few and transitory adverse events were observed. No significant reduction of the mean monthly decrea…

Association of mechanical bowel preparation with oral antibiotics and anastomotic leak following left sided colorectal resection: an international, m…

2018

INTRODUCTION: The optimal bowel preparation strategy to minimise the risk of anastomotic leak is yet to be determined. This study aimed to determine whether oral antibiotics combined with mechanical bowel preparation (MBP+Abx) was associated with a reduced risk of anastomotic leak when compared to mechanical bowel preparation alone (MBP) or no bowel preparation (NBP).METHODS: A pre-planned analysis of the European Society of Coloproctology (ESCP) 2017 Left Sided Colorectal Resection audit was performed. Patients undergoing elective left sided colonic or rectal resection with primary anastomosis between 1 January 2017 and 15 March 2017 by any operative approach were included. The primary out…
