Gender, Identities, and Material Culture in the Italic Peninsula: Burial Practices and Loom Weights in Perspective
2021
AbstractThis paper discusses the complex relationship between material culture and gender studies from a methodological point of view, with the aim of contributing to discussions in the field of Classical archaeology. First, we provide a few historiographical benchmarks for key epistemological developments, while evidencing the methodological difficulties inherent in the variability of our interpretations of burial practices and data. Then, in a second section, a case study focuses on simple objects of daily life. Discussing approaches inspired by gender studies, and considering the place of loom weights, we wish to tackle the presumption of textile work as an eminently female activity. The…
Guanine-based purines affects the enteric cholinergic neurotransmission via a mechanism not involving membrane receptors
2011
Increasing evidence indicate that guanine-based purines, known as modulators of intracellular processes, can exert extracellular effects, raising the possibility of the existence of specific receptors for these compounds. We investigated if guaninebased purine receptors may be present in the rodent gastrointestinal tract modulating intestinal contractility, as the well known adenine-based purine receptors. Experiments were performed in vitro recording spontaneous and neurally-evoked contractile activity, as changes in isometric tension, in mouse distal colon circular muscle. Guanosine up to 3 mM or guanine up to 1 mM, did not affect the spontaneous mechanical activity, but they significantl…

ROLE OF RENIN-ANGIOTENSIN SYSTEM IN COLONIC DYSMOTILITY ASSOCIATED WITH BOWEL INFLAMMATION IN RATS
2015
Dysregulation of different mediator systems could contribute to the gut dismotility in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs), chronic disorders characterized by an exasperated immune response disturbing gut functions. Among these, Angiotensin II (Ang II), the main peptide of renin-angiotensin system (RAS), can participate in inflammatory responses and RAS components are increased in IBD patients. Since RAS has emerged as gut motility regulator, our objectives was to investigate, in an IBD rat model, the RAS functionality and its eventual contribution to colonic dismotility. Experimental colitis was induced in rats by intracolonic administration of 2,4-dinitrobenzenesulfonic acid (DNBS). Drug e…
Associations among immigrants at the crossroads.Transnational action and co-option risks
2016
Trauma and storytelling in Betty Louise Bell’s Faces in the Moon
2018
The dominant understanding of trauma as an epistemological crisis that can be mimetically passed on to readers has in the twenty-first century been criticized for its apolitical and ahistorical orientations. As a way to assess this criticism, this article examines trauma and storytelling in Betty Louise Bell’s Faces in the Moon (1994), a novel which places the trauma of sexual violence in a broader context of settler colonialism. Reading the novel in dialog with American Indian studies and research on the writings of women of color offers an exploration of key aspects of trauma theory, such as the notions of unrepresentability, punctuality, transmissibility, belatedness, and passive witness…
Les débats devant la commission d'esclavage
2010
On March 4, 1848, thanks to the decisive impetus given by Victor Schoelcher, the principle of the abolition of slavery was proclaimed by decree and a « Commission for the preparation of an act of immediate emancipation in all the colonies of the Republic » was established. Like the commission de Broglie under the July Monarchy, the commission, chaired by Schoelcher, provided a huge work of documentation, information and reflection on the settlements, studying also the organization of the English colonies. However, unlike the previous one, the commission of 1848 required the immediate abolition of slavery (Decree of April 27, 1848), without waiting for the election of the National Assembly, …
