L'abolitionnisme de Victor Schoelcher, un humanisme mâtiné de colonialisme et de moralisme

1999

Although this title might be somewhat provocative, there is no intent to be anti-schoelcherist. The aim is not to diminish Victor Schoelcher's considerable achievements, but to fight against the unanimous preconceptions that have transformed this man into a myth. By studying the legal and political consequences of his proposals and his engagements, we have underlined not only the extent and complexity of his work for the Republic - that has been little known up to now, though Schoelcher ought to be considered to be one of the fathers of the Republic - but his contradictions too. Schoelcher was so sure of the virtues of the republican values of the mother country, that his fight, albeit huma…

In 1828, in Mana, in French Guyana, Anne-Marie Javouhey was the maker of a complex society experiment, between suggestions of utopian socialism and Jesuit reductions of the seventeenth century, which would become a laboratory for the redemption of marginalized Europeans and for the emancipation of the blacks of Africa brought to the colonies.

Finns in the Colonial World

2021

AbstractUtilizing such concepts as “colonial complicity” and “colonialism without colonies”, this chapter examines the case of Finns and Finland as a nation that was once oppressed but also itself complicit in colonialism. It argues that although the Finnish nation has historically been positioned in Europe between western and eastern empires, Finns were not only passive victims of (Russian) imperial rule but also active participants in the creation of imperial vocabulary in various colonial contexts, including Sápmi in the North. This chapter argues that although Finns never had overseas colonies, they were involved in the colonial world, sending out colonizers and producing images of colon…

Les débats devant la commission d'esclavage

2010

On March 4, 1848, thanks to the decisive impetus given by Victor Schoelcher, the principle of the abolition of slavery was proclaimed by decree and a « Commission for the preparation of an act of immediate emancipation in all the colonies of the Republic » was established. Like the commission de Broglie under the July Monarchy, the commission, chaired by Schoelcher, provided a huge work of documentation, information and reflection on the settlements, studying also the organization of the English colonies. However, unlike the previous one, the commission of 1848 required the immediate abolition of slavery (Decree of April 27, 1848), without waiting for the election of the National Assembly, …

La politique coloniale de la IIe République : un assimilationnisme modéré

1998

The colonial policy of the second Republic demonstrate a moderate assimilationist policy. The ideas of Victor Schoelcher are influential, but not entirely adopted. Indeed, Schoelcher fought for the application of common law to the colonies. Although the emancipated slaves of the four old colonies are under the rule of juridical assimilation, the specific status of the natives remains unchanged. The constitution of 1848 institutes a représentation of the colonies before the National Assembly, proclaims the unity and indivisibility of the Republic and the sovereignty of France over its colonies. However, it adopts the principle of specific legislation for the later.

Le grafie e le visioni in Oltremare di Umberto Di Segni

2022

Between the end of 1993 and the beginning of 1994, the Galleria d’Arte Moderna in Bologna held an extraordinary exhibition on Italian architecture in the overseas territories, accompanied by a catalogue which, through period drawings and photos, gave an insight into a very interesting moment in the history of Italian architecture. The “Quarta Sponda”, at that time thought of as the nineteenth region of the Homeland, was to be a true extension of Italy that would be inhabited, according to a well-defined colonisation programme, by one hundred thousand colonists. The role of architecture was central to the process of founding new agglomerations and representative buildings envisaged by the Fas…
