Drying rate control in microwave assisted processing of sliced apples

2018

The most enhanced microwave systems for the preparation of quality-dehydrated fruits continuously adjust the power level in order to maintain the product temperature above a target value. As a result, typical drying curves that exhibit high drying rates in the middle stage are obtained. This can often lead to quality damage or undesirable changes on food colour and texture. In response to these issues, a microwave system is proposed that can realise drying processes keeping drying rates constant. This approach required a continuous temperature adjustment of the apple slices under test, whose temperature was detected by a computer-aided infrared thermography system. Since temperature correct…

Modelling of Reflectance Spectra of Skin Phototypes III

2011

In dermatology, study of human skin colour is related to skin phototype (SPT) in which the Fitzpatrick's scale is the most used skin photo type classification. Assessment of skin response to UV for various reasons plays an important role in dermatology. This is however not easy to be performed because of two reasons. Firstly, skin areas may have different skin tone resulting in different reflectance spectra and secondly, different modalities may produce different reflectance spectra. We hypothesize that the underlying pattern of reflectance spectra must be similar regardless of the modalities use and the skin areas where it is obtained, for a particular person. An observational clinical stu…

Generation of white LED light by frequency downconversion using a perylene-based dye

2012

A high efficiency white light emitting diode (LED) was fabricated by generation of frequency down-conversion from a GaN/InGaN blue LED. In place of conventional inorganic phosphors, a perylene-based dye was used for colour conversion. The resulting hybrid structure is analysed by focusing on the visual performance of the realised LEDs employing the most relevant photometric parameters of a light source. Preparation of the organic polymer is described as well. The thermal stability of the dye was investigated and a simple structure which avoids colour degradation is proposed.

Interspecific differences in carotenoid content and sensitivity to UVB radiation in three acanthocephalan parasites exploiting a common intermediate …

2011

9 pages; International audience; Few endoparasite species are pigmented. Acanthocephalans are an exception however, with several species being characterised by yellow to orange colouration both at the immature (cystacanth) and adult stages. However, the functional and adaptive significance of carotenoid-based colourations in acanthocephalans remains unclear. One possibility is that the carotenoid content of acanthocephalan cystacanths acts as a protective device against ultra-violet radiation (UVR) passing through the translucent cuticle of their crustacean hosts. Indeed, acanthocephalans often bring about behavioural changes in their aquatic intermediate hosts that can increase their expos…

Fruit physical, chemical and aromatic attributes of early, intermediate and late apricot cultivars.

2010

BACKGROUND: In order to reach good fruit quality, apricots require a balance of sugars and acids as well as a strong apricot aroma. In this study, fruit quality of early, intermediate and late apricot cultivars was evaluated by measuring physical, chemical and olfactory attributes. Multivariate analysis of quality and aroma attributes was used to identify groups of similar cultivars and association with ripening season. RESULTS: Physical, chemical and aromatic attributes showed great variation amongcultivars but no relation to ripening season. Aromatic profiles (34 volatiles) of fruit tissues indicated qualitative and quantitative differences among cultivars. Ninfa and Mandorlon were riches…

Precision Management of Fruit Trees

2022

The aim of the Special Issue “Precision Management of Fruit Trees” was to collect new insights to support the adoption of advanced, efficient, and sustainable management techniques in the fruit production sector. Indeed, this is an opportunity offered by the technological innovations adopted using new-generation sensors and implemented through precise management operations. This Special Issue contains 11 scientific articles contributing to our knowledge on the precision management of fruit trees, indicating the high activity of this sector and possibly leading to the application of new techniques/protocols to overcome global and rapidly changing environmental issues. Ground-level predation on artificial caterpillars indicates no enemy-free time for lepidopteran larvae

2017

Lepidoptera is one of the most diverse orders of insects, their larvae are very abundant in many habitats, and frequent prey of various predators. To decrease predation risk, caterpillars developed several means of defence, among them timing their activity to avoid predators (seeking enemy-free time). Although the enemy-free time hypothesis is often invoked to explain caterpillar behaviour, empirical evidence for it is scarce. We tested whether such enemy-free time exists in a temperate forest by comparing predation pressure on artificial caterpillars during day and night on the ground in forest fragments in Denmark. We found a high predation rate, 23.9% d(-1), and higher predation rate at …

Experimental rearing of the sea urchinParacentrotus lividusfed with discards of the lettuceLactuca sativain a sea-based system

2017

Small-sized specimens (test diameter: 16.64 ± 0.93 mm, mean ± SE) of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus were fed with fresh discards of the lettuce Lactuca sativa during a 24-week experiment in a sea-based system. At the end of the experiment, stock survival was high (88.8 ± 6.6%). Sea urchin test diameter and total weight grew by 35% and 56%, respectively, while gonad somatic index, after an initial decrease, increased by 3.2%. Moreover, more than 90% of specimens achieved the gonad colour that the market demands. These results support the exploitation of L. sativa as the main ingredient in a manufactured diet for echinoculture of P. lividus. Employing diets formulated with discard ingre…
