The effect of prolonged thermal stress on the physiological parameters of young, sedentary men and the correlations with somatic features and body co…

2019

Little is known about the effect of prolonged thermal stress on the physiological parameters of young and sedentary men. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of prolonged thermal stress on the physiological parameters of young men and the correlations with somatic features and body composition parameters. Forty-two sedentary men aged 20.24 ± 1.68 years were exposed to 10-, 12- and 14-minute sauna sessions (temperature: 90-91 °C; relative humidity: 14-16%). The participants' body composition parameters were determined pre-sauna exposure, and their body mass and blood pressure were measured pre and post-sauna treatment. Physiological parameters were monitored during each sauna ses…

SPECTRAL COMPOSITION OF EATING SOUNDS GENERATED BY CRISPY, CRUNCHY AND CRACKLY FOODS

1995

Separate air and bone conducted food sounds generated by six subjects biting into eight foods were recorded and analysed by a fast Fourier transform (FFT) signal analyser. A panel of 60 subjects classified the 8 foods according to their texture: crispy, crunchy and crackly and these textural characteristics were described by spectral characteristics of biting sounds. Crispy foods (such as extruded flat breads) were found to generate high pitched sounds that show a high level of frequencies higher than 5 kHz, especially for air conduction. Crunchy foods (such as raw carrot) generate low pitched sounds with a characteristic peak on frequency range 1.25 to 2 kHz for air conduction. And crackly…

Varietal and geographic classification of french red wines in terms of elements, amino acids and aromatic alcohols

1988

Thirty-four French red wines from three regions already studied for their anthocyanin and flavonoid constituents have been further analysed for elements, amino acids and aromatic alcohols. An interpretation of the differences between wines related to their different geographic and varietal origins has been made from the results of statistical analyses: F statistic, principal component analysis (PCA) and stepwise discriminant analysis (SDA). Wine samples produced near Bordeaux were found to be characterised by higher rubidium and lower lithium and calcium concentrations. Differences between wine samples made from the same grape variety or produced in the same region are mainly related to dif…

Bioaccessibility of Enniatins A, A1, B, and B1 in Different Commercial Breakfast Cereals, Cookies, and Breads of Spain

2013

Fusarotoxins enniatins (ENs) can represent a potential risk as natural contaminants of cereal commodities. However, only their bioaccessible fraction can exert a toxicity. The purpose of this study was to determine the ENs A, A₁, B, and B₁ bioaccessibility added in 1.5 and 3.0 μmol/g concentrations in breakfast cereals, cookies, and breads using a simulated in vitro gastrointestinal extraction model. Bioaccessibility values ranged between 40.4 ± 1.9 and 79.9 ± 2.8%. The lower values were 50.1, 40.4, 43.9, and 46.3% in wheat bran with fibers, and the higher values were 79.9, 64.2, 69.8, and 73.6% in white loaf bread for the ENs A, A₁, B, and B₁, respectively. Composition, industrial processing and applications of rice bran γ-oryzanol

2009

Abstract Rice bran oil (RBO) (20–25 wt% in rice bran) is a unique rich source of commercially-important bioactive phytochemicals, most of them of interest in nutrition, pharmacy and cosmetics. The unsaponifiable constituents of RBO include mainly tocols (vitamin E, 0.10–0.14%) and γ-oryzanol (esters of trans- ferulic acid with sterols and triterpenic alcohols, 0.9–2.9%). The following topics concerning γ-oryzanol are reviewed: analytical methods for characterisation and determination; influence of genetic and environmental factors on the composition of rice bran; extraction approaches, including supercritical CO 2 and subcritical water; and biomedical and industrial applications, including …

ARES I: WASP-76 b, A Tale of Two HST Spectra

2020

We analyse the transmission and emission spectra of the ultra-hot Jupiter WASP-76b, observed with the G141 grism of the Hubble Space Telescope's Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3). We reduce and fit the raw data for each observation using the open-source software Iraclis before performing a fully Bayesian retrieval using the publicly available analysis suite TauRex 3. Previous studies of the WFC3 transmission spectra of WASP-76 b found hints of titanium oxide (TiO) and vanadium oxide (VO) or non-grey clouds. Accounting for a fainter stellar companion to WASP-76, we reanalyse this data and show that removing the effects of this background star changes the slope of the spectrum, resulting in these vi…

IT Solutions for Business Process Management

2018

In the paper are listed the main types of architectures of systems for business process management. Thus, we can identify several categories of such architectures, namely architectures of workflow management systems, flexible workflow management architectures, service-oriented architecture, advanced service composition, and data-driven approaches. As such, there are two of the five categories, namely architectures of workflow management systems and architectures of flexible workflow management systems, and a methodology is proposed for developing solutions for business process management.

Structural and functional changes in the gut microbiota associated to Clostridium difficile infection

2014

Antibiotic therapy is a causative agent of severe disturbances in microbial communities. In healthy individuals, the gut microbiota prevents infection by harmful microorganisms through direct inhibition (releasing antimicrobial compounds), competition, or stimulation of the host’s immune defenses. However, widespread antibiotic use has resulted in short- and long-term shifts in the gut microbiota structure, leading to a loss in colonization resistance in some cases. Consequently, some patients develop Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) after taking an antibiotic (AB) and, at present, this opportunistic pathogen is one of the main causes of antibiotic-associated diarrhea in hospitalized p…

Oro-gustatory perception of dietary lipids and calcium signaling in taste bud cells are altered in nutritionally obesity-prone Psammomys obesus.

2013

Since the increasing prevalence of obesity is one of the major health problems of the modern era, understanding the mechanisms of oro-gustatory detection of dietary fat is critical for the prevention and treatment of obesity. We have conducted the present study on Psammomys obesus, the rodent desert gerbil which is a unique polygenic natural animal model of obesity. Our results show that obese animals exhibit a strong preference for lipid solutions in a two-bottle test. Interestingly, the expression of CD36, a lipido-receptor, in taste buds cells (TBC), isolated from circumvallate papillae, was decreased at mRNA level, but remained unaltered at protein level, in obese animals. We further st…

EFFECTS OF CONJUGATED LINOLEIC ACID AND RESISTANCE TRAINING IN RECREATIONAL ATHLETES

2008

Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is a mixture of positional and geometrical isomers of linoleic acid, that are known to posses several physiological effects such as enhancing immune response, reducing arteriosclerosis risk, and inhibiting carcinogenesis. Over the last decade, the use of CLA supplement has become widespread among elite and recreational athletes because it should increase training effects, improve fat oxidation, increase energy delivery, reduce body weight, improve lipid profile, and so on. The purpose of this project is to investigate whether CLA supplementation after a resistance training session affects general markers of muscle damage, total testosterone, cortisol and sex h…
