Real-space imaging with pattern recognition of a ligand-protected Ag374 nanocluster at sub-molecular resolution
2018
High-resolution real-space imaging of nanoparticle surfaces is desirable for better understanding of surface composition and morphology, molecular interactions at the surface, and nanoparticle chemical functionality in its environment. However, achieving molecular or sub-molecular resolution has proven to be very challenging, due to highly curved nanoparticle surfaces and often insufficient knowledge of the monolayer composition. Here, we demonstrate sub-molecular resolution in scanning tunneling microscopy imaging of thiol monolayer of a 5 nm nanoparticle Ag374 protected by tert-butyl benzene thiol. The experimental data is confirmed by comparisons through a pattern recognition algorithm t…
Physical chemistry of the powder metallurgy of beryllium: Chemical characterization of the powder in relation to its granularity
1996
Combining the systematic quantitative chemical analysis of the light impurities H, C, N, and O, the quantitative thermal desorption of molecular H2O and H2, and X ray diffractometry of various size fractions of a commercial Be powder (SP-65 grade from Brush-Wellman) allowed the precise de-termination of the mean composition and equivalent mean thickness of the surface impurity phases in the passivation-contamination layer on the surface of the particles. The overall surface stoichi-ometry is as follows: 0.2 BeOcrystallized, 0.8 [BeO - 0.59 H2O]amorphous, 0.14 H2Oads The result of the elemental analysis by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of the unetched surface of a powder pellet is compare…
Optical and photonic material hardness for energetic environments
2009
We studied the effects of dielectric change in the chemical composition and in the realization procedures under radiation exposure. We have compared the radiation effects on Ge-doped and F-doped fibers and preforms: the first play a crucial role in the photosensitivity property, the second improves the dielectric radiation hardness even at low concentrations. The use of different spectroscopic techniques (RIA, OA, EPR) allow the identification of the point defect formation mechanisms at the origin of the optical degradation properties.
Estimation of the effective diffusivity of blowing agents in closed-cell low-density polyurethane foams based on thermal aging data
2021
Abstract Low-density closed-cell polyurethane (PU) foams are applied as thermal insulation materials due to their low thermal conductivity imparted by that of the physical blowing agent (PBA) used in foam production. However, foam conductivity tends to gradually increase with time, primarily due to changes in the gas composition in foam cells brought about by gas diffusion. To enable predicting the variation of conductivity during the service life of foam insulation, gas diffusivities are usually determined by measuring the gas composition in foams at different aging times. This study considers an alternative approach of estimating the effective diffusivities of gases in PU foams, which is …
Chemical composition of two-photon oxidized graphene
2017
Chemical composition of two-photon oxidized single-layer graphene is studied by micrometer X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Oxidized areas with a size of 2 × 2 μm2 are patterned on graphene by tightly focused femtosecond pulsed irradiation under air atmosphere. The degree of oxidation is controlled by varying the irradiation time. The samples are characterized by four wave mixing (FWM) imaging and Raman spectroscopy/imaging. Micrometer-XPS is used to study local chemical composition of oxidized areas. XPS imaging shows good contrast between oxidized and non-oxidized areas. Gradual oxidation is observed from growth of signals attributed mainly to hydroxyl (Csingle bondOH) and epoxide …
Effect of doping and crystallite size on the electrochemical performance of Li4Ti5O12
2016
Abstract Defect spinel phase lithium titanate (Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 ) has been suggested as a promising negative electrode material for next generation lithium ion batteries. Flame spray pyrolysis has been shown to be a viable fast, one-step process for synthesis of nanoparticulate Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 . However, due to the rapid quenching that is integral to the process the crystallite size remain very small and non-uniform. To overcome this shortcoming a vertical flow tube furnace was used to increase the high-temperature residence time. This resulted in an increase in the crystallite size and crystallinity of the product. As a result of this increase the electrochemical performance of the Li 4 Ti 5 …
Tuning the magnetic properties in the layered molecular based magnets A[FeIIRuxIIIM1−xIII(ox)3] (MIII=Cr or Fe; ox=oxalate; A=organic or organometall…
2001
Abstract The magnetic properties of the family of layered molecular magnets A[FeIIMIII(ox)3] (MIII=Cr, Fe, Ru; ox=oxalate; A+=[NBu4]+, [ CoCp 2 ∗ ] + ) are reported. In particular, a detailed magnetic study of the solid solutions FeII(RuIIICrIII) and FeII(RuIIIFeIII) has been undertaken. We show that in these magnets both, transition temperatures and coercive fields, can be easily tuned by changing the chemical composition of the material, i.e. the ratio RuIII/MIII (MIII=Cr, Fe) within the magnetic layers and the type of cation A+ inserted in between the layers. Coercive fields as high as 2.2 T have been reached in this way.
Phasenumwandlungen in Korrosionsschichten auf Eisen: Mößbauerspektroskopische Untersuchungen
1981
Mount Etna volcano (Italy) as a major “dust” point source in the Mediterranean area
2016
Volcanic emissions represent one of the most relevant natural sources of trace elements to the troposphere. Due to their potential toxicity, they may have important environmental impacts from local to global scale. They can also severely affect the atmospheric and terrestrial environment at timescales ranging from a few to millions of years. Mt. Etna volcano is known as one of the largest global contributors of magmatic gases (CO2, SO2 and halogens) and particulate matter, including some toxic trace elements. The aim of this study is to characterize the chemical composition and the mineralogical features of the volcanogenic aerosol passively emitted from Mt. Etna. Twenty-five samples were c…
Isotopic composition of single rain events in the central Mediterranean
2008
[1] The ratios of stable isotopes of single rain events were investigated during the period October 2005 to September 2006 in the central Mediterranean. Clear seasonal trends were identified in both oxygen isotope ratios and the deuterium-excess parameter, and these were ascribed to the dominant circulation systems during both cold and hot intraannual periods. Rain events were classified on the basis of the origin of rain-bearing systems. Air masses coming from the south usually give rise to rainwater with a low deuterium excess. Air masses coming from the north and the northeast are often dry and cold, and are associated with high evaporation from the Mediterranean Sea that occurs under is…
