Context-Aware RF-Energy Harvesting for IoT Networks

2021

Energy Harvesting plays a crucial role in improving the operational lifetime of IoT devices. The deployment of dedicated RF-transmitters helps in sufficient energy propagation to the sensor nodes of IoT networks. Also, energy harvesting using the deployment of such RF-transmitters is a challenging issue. In this work, two methods are proposed for the optimal placement of RF-transmitters for efficient energy harvesting in wireless sensor networks. The proposed context-aware RF-energy harvesting considers different network performance parameters such as energy-hole information, and data routing information. RF-transmitter deployment is achieved using network connectivity information in the fi…

The Sliced COO Format for Sparse Matrix-Vector Multiplication on CUDA-enabled GPUs

2012

Abstract Existing formats for Sparse Matrix-Vector Multiplication (SpMV) on the GPU are outperforming their corresponding implementations on multi-core CPUs. In this paper, we present a new format called Sliced COO (SCOO) and an effcient CUDA implementation to perform SpMV on the GPU. While previous work shows experiments on small to medium-sized sparse matrices, we perform evaluations on large sparse matrices. We compared SCOO performance to existing formats of the NVIDIA Cusp library. Our resutls on a Fermi GPU show that SCOO outperforms the COO and CSR format for all tested matrices and the HYB format for all tested unstructured matrices. Furthermore, comparison to a Sandy-Bridge CPU sho…

Depression Assessment by Fusing High and Low Level Features from Audio, Video, and Text

2016

International audience; Depression is a major cause of disability world-wide. The present paper reports on the results of our participation to the depression sub-challenge of the sixth Audio/Visual Emotion Challenge (AVEC 2016), which was designed to compare feature modalities ( audio, visual, interview transcript-based) in gender-based and gender-independent modes using a variety of classification algorithms. In our approach, both high and low level features were assessed in each modality. Audio features were extracted from the low-level descriptors provided by the challenge organizers. Several visual features were extracted and assessed including dynamic characteristics of facial elements…

A Comparison Study of Metaheuristic Techniques for Providing QoS to Avatars in DVE Systems

2004

Network-server architecture has become a de-facto standard for Distributed Virtual Environment (DVE) systems. In these systems, a large set of remote users share a 3D virtual scene. In order to design scalable DVE systems, different approaches have been proposed to maintain the DVE system working under its saturation point, maximizing system throughput. Also, in order to provide quality of service to avatars in a DVE systems, avatars should be assigned to servers taking into account, among other factors, system throughput and system latency. This highly complex problem is called quality of service (QoS) problem in DVE systems. This paper proposes two different approaches for solving the QoS…

Low invasive multisensor acquisition system for real-time monitoring of cardiovascular and respiratory parameters

2020

The recent advances in multiparametric monitoring of biosignals and management of big data prompt for the development of devices and techniques for the extraction of indicators with physiological relevance. In this context, we have designed and realized a portable electronic system, equipped with simple biomedical sensors, able to synchronously record multiple electrocardiographic (ECG), photoplethysmographic (PPG) and breathing signals, for carrying out a non-invasive monitoring of several cardiovascular parameters. In this work, we show the results of preliminary measurements performed following a specific physiological protocol (i.e., deep breathing with 10 s per cycle). The system allow…

The role of the Access Point in Wi-Fi networks with selfish nodes

2009

In Wi-Fi networks, mobile nodes compete for accessing the shared channel by means of a random access protocol called Distributed Coordination Function (DCF), which is long term fair. But recent drivers allow users to configure protocol parameters differently from their standard values in order to break the protocol fairness and obtain a larger share of the available bandwidth at the expense of other users. This motivates a game theoretical analysis of DCF. Previous studies have already modeled access to a shared wireless channel in terms of non-cooperative games among the nodes, but they have mainly considered ad hoc mode operation. In this paper we consider the role of the Access Point (AP…

Continuous energy-efficient monitoring model for mobile ad hoc networks

2021

The monitoring of mobile ad hoc networks is an observation task that consists of analysing the operational status of these networks while evaluating their functionalities. In order to allow the whole network and applications to work properly, the monitoring task has become of considerable importance. It must be carried out in real-time by performing measurements, logs, configurations, etc. However, achieving continuous energy-efficient monitoring in mobile wireless networks is very challenging considering the environment features as well as the unpredictable behavior of the participating nodes. This paper outlines the challenges of continuous energy-efficient monitoring over mobile ad hoc n…
