AS4 message exchange protocol consolidation through the European CEF eDelivery infrastructure

2020

Since 2014, the European Union has supported the creation of cross-border communication networks based on an AS4 eDelivery solution through the Connecting Europe Facility. This article describes the current status of the uptake of the AS4 message exchange protocol in accordance with both the European infrastructure CEF eDelivery and the European regulation n°910/2014 on electronic identification and trust services for electronic transactions in the internal market. The main objective is to present an analysis of the achieved results from the implementation of the AS4 solution in several European projects carried out during the last 12 years to verify the impact of these projects around Euro…

A Stochastic Routing Algorithm for Distributed IoT with Unreliable Wireless Links

2016

Punctual and reliable transmission of collected information is indispensable for many Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Such applications rely on IoT devices operating over wireless communication links which are intrinsically unreliable. Consequently to improve packet delivery success while reducing delivery delay is a challenging task for data transmission in the IoT. In this paper, we propose an improved distributed stochastic routing algorithm to increase packet delivery ratio and decrease delivery delay in IoT with unreliable communication links. We adopt the concept of absorbing Markov chain to model the network and evaluate the expected delivery ratio and expected delivery delay …

A Distributed Multi-Authority Attribute Based Encryption Scheme for Secure Sharing of Personal Health Records

2017

Personal health records (PHR) are an emerging health information exchange model, which facilitates PHR owners to efficiently manage their health data. Typically, PHRs are outsourced and stored in third-party cloud platforms. Although, outsourcing private health data to third-party platforms is an appealing solution for PHR owners, it may lead to significant privacy concerns, because there is a higher risk of leaking private data to unauthorized parties. As a way of ensuring PHR owners' control of their outsourced PHR data, attribute based encryption (ABE) mechanisms have been considered due to the fact that such schemes facilitate a mechanism of sharing encrypted data among a set of intende…

Cost-Effective eHealth System Based on a Multi-Sensor System-on-Chip Platform and Data Fusion in Cloud for Sport Activity Monitoring

2018

eHealth systems provide medical support to users and contribute to the development of mobile and quality health care. They also provide results on the prevention and follow-up of diseases by monitoring health-status indicators and methodical data gathering in patients. Telematic management of health services by means of the Internet of Things provides immediate support and it is cheaper than conventional physical presence methods. Currently, wireless communications and sensor networks allow a person or group to be monitored remotely. The aim of this paper is to develop and assess a system for monitoring physiological parameters to be applied in different scenarios, such as health or sports.…

Towards Intelligent IoT Networks: Reinforcement Learning for Reliable Backscatter Communications

2019

Backscatter communication is becoming the focal point of research for low-powered Internet of things (IoT). However, the intelligence aspect of the backscattering devices is not well-defined. Since future IoT networks are going to be a formidable platform of intelligent sensing devices operating in a self-organizing manner, it is necessary to incorporate learning capabilities in backscatter devices. Motivated by this objective, this paper aims to employ reinforcement learning for improving the performance of backscatter networks. In particular, a multicluster backscatter communication model is developed for shortrange information sharing. This is followed by a power allocation algorithm usi…

Evaluation of Perception Latencies in a Human-Robot Collaborative Environment

2020

The latency in vision-based sensor systems used in human-robot collaborative environments is an important safety parameter which in most cases has been neglected by researchers. The main reason for this neglect is the lack of an accurate ground-truth sensor system with a minimal delay to benchmark the vision-sensors against. In this paper the latencies of 3D vision-based sensors are experimentally evaluated and analyzed using an accurate laser-tracker system which communicates on a dedicated EtherCAT channel with minimal delay. The experimental results in the paper demonstrate that the latency in the vision-based sensor system is many orders higher than the latency in the control and actuat…

Robust Network Agreement on Logical Information

2011

Abstract Logical consensus is an approach to distributed decision making which is based on the availability of a network of agents with incomplete system knowledge. The method requires the construction of a Boolean map which defines a dynamic system allowing the entire network to consent on a unique, global decision. Previous work by the authors proved the method to be viable for applications such as intrusion detection within a structured environment, when the agent's communication topology is known in advance. The current work aims at providing a fully distributed protocol, requiring no a priori knowledge of each agent's communication neighbors. The protocol allows the construction of a r…

Adaptive-gain extended Kalman filter: Extension to the continuous-discrete case

2009

In the present article we propose a nonlinear observer that merges the behaviors 1) of an extended Kalman filter, mainly designed to smooth off noise , and 2) of high-gain observers devoted to handle large perturbations in the state estimation. We specifically aim at continuous-discrete systems. The strategy consists in letting the high-gain self adapt according to the innovation. We define innovation computed over a time window and justify its usage via an important lemma. We prove the general convergence of the resulting observer.

Making Industrial Robots Smarter with Adaptive Reasoning and Autonomous Thinking for Real-Time Tasks in Dynamic Environments: A Case Study

2018

In order to extend the abilities of current robots in industrial applications towards more autonomous and flexible manufacturing, this work presents an integrated system comprising real-time sensing, path-planning and control of industrial robots to provide them with adaptive reasoning, autonomous thinking and environment interaction under dynamic and challenging conditions. The developed system consists of an intelligent motion planner for a 6 degrees-of-freedom robotic manipulator, which performs pick-and-place tasks according to an optimized path computed in real-time while avoiding a moving obstacle in the workspace. This moving obstacle is tracked by a sensing strategy based on ma-chin…

Surrogate models for the compressive strength mapping of cement mortar materials

2021

Despite the extensive use of mortar materials in constructions over the last decades, there is not yet a robust quantitative method available in the literature, which can reliably predict their strength based on the mix components. This limitation is attributed to the highly nonlinear relation between the mortar’s compressive strength and the mixed components. In this paper, the application of artificial intelligence techniques for predicting the compressive strength of mortars is investigated. Specifically, Levenberg–Marquardt, biogeography-based optimization, and invasive weed optimization algorithms are used for this purpose (based on experimental data available in the literature). The c…
