This paper investigates the typology of the Portuguese public wash-houses that represents a very important sanitary aid and a space of social aggregation. More particularly, the most common features of such a typology will be outlined: architectural configuration, materials and technology, constructive characteristics, hydraulic equipment, historical evolution. These simple but highly functional little buildings are spread across the whole country and had been extremely important for the population since the middle age. Close to the historical city centre, the prince Pignatelli built his villa-palace in the 18th century. Later it became the headquarter of the Order of the Holy Heart that instituted a school attended by the highest society. The 11430 m2 historical building (ground floor, first and second floor), along with its monumental garden (about 9600 m2), was abandoned by the nuns in 2008.
