Lit environments quality: A software for the analysis of luminance maps obtained with the HDR imaging technique

2013

Abstract Energy performance of lighting systems has assumed a significant role in the assessment of buildings’ consumptions and consequently lighting design is aimed to reduce installed power but at the same time to achieve an excellent lighting quality both for visual and health purposes. Lighting design is nowadays essentially based on illuminance values on visual tasks and surrounding areas, but today designers’ and researchers’ interest is focused on the analysis of luminance maps obtained through video luminance meters or with numeric simulation tools. Luminance maps availability focus the attention on a more accurate study of the light reaching the eyes (luminance), rather than on the…

Effect of operating conditions and feedstock composition on the properties of manganese oxide or quartz charcoal pellets for the use in ferroalloy in…

2020

peer-reviewed The full text of this article will not be available until the embargo expires on the 26/12/2021 This study investigates the effect of heat treatment temperature on the properties of charcoal composite pellets used for the reduction of ferroalloys. The heavy fraction of biooil was used as a binder for the charcoal ore pellet preparation. The effect of heat treatment temperature on the pellet shrinkage was related to the degree of reduction which varied with feedstock and ore composition. The results showed that the size and shape of the charcoal pellets were not affected by the biooil devolatilization. Manganese charcoal pellets showed higher electrical resistance during pyroly…

The European Standards for Energy Efficiency in Buildings: an analysis of the Evolution with Reference to a Case Study

2019

The improvement of the energy efficiency of building stocks represents an important contribution for the reduction of the energy consumption in the European Union (EU), along with the decrease of greenhouse gases emissions. In this aim both the public administrations and the technical experts need reliable calculation methodology to assess buildings’ energy performance. In this framework, despite the recent publication of the Standard EN ISO 52016, that deeply modifies the approach to the energy building simulation by introducing a new hourly dynamic calculation model, the current normative framework (EN ISO 13790) will maintain its validity until the incorporation of the new Standard in th…

A noninvasive approach for the assessment of dental implants stability

2015

We propose the Electromechanical Impedance (EMI) technique to monitor the stability of dental implants. The technique consists of bonding one wafer-type piezoelectric transducers to the implant system. When subjected to an electric field, the transducer induces structural excitations which, in turn, affect the transducer’s electrical admittance. The hypothesis is that the health of the bone surrounding the implant affects the sensor’s admittance. In this paper we present the results of an experiment where a sensor is bonded to an abutment screwed to implants secured into bovine bone samples. The results show that the EMI technique can be used to monitor the stability of dental implants alth…

Highly nonlinear solitary waves for the NDT of slender beams

2015

Slender beams subjected to compressive load are common in civil engineering. The rapid in-situ measurement of this stress may help preventing structural anomalies. In this article we describe the coupling mechanism between Highly Nonlinear Solitary Waves (HNSWs) propagating along a granular system in contact with a beam subjected to thermal stress. We evaluate the use of these waves to measure stress in thermally loaded structures and to estimate the neutral temperature, i.e. the temperature at which the stress is null. We investigate numerically and experimentally one and two L-shaped chains of spherical particles in contact with a prismatic beam subjected to heat. We find that certain fea…

Seismic vulnerability of structures and infrastructures: Strategies for assessment and mitigation

2017

Seismic engineering is constantly looking for new strategies and methods that provide designers with the opportunity to get more and more efficient solutions both from the performance and from the economic point of view. In this context, the scientific community is called not to miss its support and to face the new challenges coming from the observation of the damage caused by the recent earthquakes. This Special Issue of “Ingegneria Sismica” collects some works focusing the theme of the seismic vulnerability, some of them specifically refer to mitigation strategies while others address modeling strategies. Obviously, for the multiplicity of aspects involving the theme of "seismic vulnerabi…

Almond shell reuse: a viable non-conventional aggregate for sustainable building materials

2022

Bio-based or green architecture is a new way of designing and building in line with the European Green Deal and in light of the Circular Economy principles. The main green approach directs the whole construction life cycle to be eco-sustainable and environmentally friendly from the beginning to the end of the building process. Beyond the use of eco sustainable and highly performing structural materials, new technologies able of reduce the environmental impact of buildings must be used. This paper is aimed at reviewing the possible reuse of bio- wastes of agricultural origin whose massive production generates a number of issues for their treatment and disposal. In particular, this study will…

Novel fuzzy-based optimization approaches for the prediction of ultimate axial load of circular concrete-filled steel tubes

2021

An accurate estimation of the axial compression capacity of the concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) column is crucial for ensuring the safety of structures containing them and preventing related failures. In this article, two novel hybrid fuzzy systems (FS) were used to create a new framework for estimating the axial compression capacity of circular CCFST columns. In the hybrid models, differential evolution (DE) and firefly algorithm (FFA) techniques are employed in order to obtain the optimal membership functions of the base FS model. To train the models with the new hybrid techniques, i.e., FS-DE and FS-FFA, a substantial library of 410 experimental tests was compiled from openly availa…
