Food traditions and consumer preferences for cured meats: Role of information in geographical indications

2021

Abstract Growth and development are two economic concepts that should go hand in hand. In a specific territory, the search for sustainable development is intertwined with the objectives of private operators but also with the public ones of collective well-being. As we know from the economic literature, the presence of information asymmetries leads to market failure as sustainability in the production of food products determines positive externalities that are not adequately remunerated. In this work some evolutionary trends in the demand for cured meats are analyzed, highlighting the relevant innovations introduced by sustainable consumption. Faced with this evolution of demand, with consum…

Beyond Alternative Food Networks: Understanding Motivations to Participate in Orti Urbani in Palermo

2019

Community gardens include many benefits, and different motivations seem to underline citizens’ choices to participate. In Italy, political motivations are considered one of the main reasons for participation in community gardens (known as orti urbani). Drawing from the orti urbani experience in Palermo (the largest city in Sicily, Southern Italy), this study aims to understand the main motivations that influence citizens’ participation and to measure the effects of these motivations on fruit and vegetable consumption among participants. Findings reveal that orti urbani attract middle‐class participants who possess high amounts of cultural capital but relatively less financial capital. Among…

Be congruent and I will be loyal: the case of sport services

2019

This research analyzes the relationship between brand perception of users of a sports service and their levels of loyalty. Data were treated with both SPSS 23 and EQS 6.3, using CFA to confirm reliability and validity and creating a model to be tested. Congruence explain 43% of credibility and that these two variables explain up to 73% of trust. Credibility and trust can explain up to 73% of the attitudes, while attitudes would explain up to 50% of loyalty. In the case of sports services, brand perception and its relationship with loyalty remain largely unaddressed. For this reason, it is interesting to carry out research on this subject, bringing new evidence to business reality to help ma…

The predominance of soccer in the sport and leisure habits of Spanish society

2014

The recent victories of its national football team in the 2010 World Cup and the 2008 and 2012 Euro Cups have situated Spain in the first place in the FIFA worldwide ranking, and provided it with widespread international recognition for both its decisive wins and the team's playing style. These victories mark the culmination of a dream long pursued by numerous players and coaches in Spanish football, but also by a Spanish society that is passionate about football. This article provides a descriptive overview of Spaniards' attachment to football, and tries to show its predominance in the sport and leisure habits of Spanish society. This task has been approached using diverse secondary source…

The culture in the era of clutural capitlaism: Trends and Controversies

2014

[EN] This article offers a reflection on the way in which the evolution of capitalism towards a cultural capitalism phase is propitiating the emergence of a new regime of production and reception of cultural products. To approach this task it is examined one of the most clearly observable trends in the evolution that western societies have experienced in the past decades, that is, the transformation of the market in the general pattern of the social activities and the entrance of capitalist patterns in the cultural sphere. The article finishes with a critical analysis of the most frequently consequences attributed to the evolution of capitalism in the cultural domain: the degradation of the…

Música, democratización y omnivoridad

2008

In the field of the analysis of culture, the theory of omnivorousness holds that aesthe…

Customer Experience Formation in Online Shopping : Investigating the Causes of Positive and Negative Emotions During a Visit to an Online Store

2020

This study explores customer experience formation in an online shopping context by investigating the causes of customers’ positive and negative emotions during their visit to an online store. Survey data collected from 1786 Finnish online customers was used to identify individuals who experienced strong positive (N = 138) or negative emotions (N = 215) during their visit. The causes of negative and positive emotions were studied by analyzing customers’ open-ended, written explanations attributed to their emotions. Attribution theory is utilized to explain how individuals make sense of their emotions. The findings show that customers offer various explanations for the emotions evoked during …

Neuronal Bioenergetics and Acute Mitochondrial Dysfunction: A Clue to Understanding the Central Nervous System Side Effects of Efavirenz

2014

Background. Neurological pathogenesis is associated with mitochondrial dysfunction and differences in neuronal/glial handling of oxygen and glucose. The main side effects attributed to efavirenz involve the CNS, but the underlying mechanisms are unclear. Methods. Human cell lines and rat primary cultures of neurons and astrocytes were treated with clinically relevant efavirenz concentration. Results. Efavirenz alters mitochondrial respiration, enhances reactive oxygen species generation, undermines mitochondrial membrane potential, and reduces adenosine triphosphate (ATP) levels in a concentration-dependent fashion in both neurons and glial cells. However, it activates adenosine monophospha…

Inhibition of Mitochondrial Function by Efavirenz Increases Lipid Content in Hepatic Cells

2010

Efavirenz (EFV) is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) widely used in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection therapy. It has been associated with hepatotoxic effects and alterations in lipid and body fat composition. Given the importance of the liver in lipid regulation, we have evaluated the effects of clinically used concentrations of EFV on the mitochondria and lipid metabolism of human hepatic cells in vitro. Mitochondrial function was rapidly undermined by EFV to an extent that varied with the concentration employed; in particular, respiration and intracellular adenosine triphosphate (ATP) levels were reduced whereas reactive oxygen species (ROS) production i…

Bleomycin genotoxicity alteration by glutathione and cytochrome P-450 cellular content in respiratory proficient and deficient strains of Saccharomyc…

1999

The genotoxic effects of the antiblastic drug bleomycin were studied in the D7 strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and on its derivative mitochondrial mutant rho degree at different cellular concentrations of two drug metabolizing systems, glutathione (GSH) and cytochrome P-450. Bleomycin mutagenic activity was evaluated as frequencies of mitotic gene conversion, reversion and total aberrations under different physiological conditions. In the D7 strain, petite mutant induction was also detected. This is important due to the role of the mitochondrial genome in cancer induction, ageing and degenerative diseases. Both strains showed higher convertant than revertant induction. At high cytochrome…
