How does a transition zone affect the electric field enhanced water dissociation in bipolar membranes?

The changes in the electric field in the space charge regions and the corresponding effect on the water dissociation rate when a transition zone exists between the layers of a bipolar membrane are theoretically studied. A quasi-equilibrium approach based on the Poisson-Boltzmann equation for the space charge interfacial regions is used. The transition zone acts to decrease significantly the water dissociation rate. However, for realistic values of the thickness δ of the transition zone and provided that the ohmic drop over δ be small, this decrease in the dissociation rate is not very dependent on δ. The results obtained give theoretical support to some recent experimental findings.

Influence of cell-cell contact between L. thermotolerans and S. cerevisiae on yeast interactions and the exo-metabolome

International audience; Sequential fermentation of grape must inoculated with L. thermotolerans and then S. cerevisiae 24 h later (typical wine-making practice) was conducted with or without cell-cell contact between the two yeast species. We monitored cell viability of the two species throughout fermentation by flow cytometry. The cell viability of S. cerevisiae decreased under both conditions, but the decrease was greater if there was cell-cell contact. Exploiting redox activity of MIL-100(Fe) carrier enables carvacrol prolonged antimicrobial activity

The design of efficient food contact materials that maintain optimal levels of food safety is of paramount relevance to reduce the increasing foodborne illnesses. In this work, we develop a smart composite MOF-based material that fosters a unique prolonged antibacterial activity. The composite is obtained by entrapping a natural preserving food molecule, carvacrol, into the mesoporous MIL-100(Fe) material following a direct and biocompatible impregnation method and obtaining particularly high payloads. Patch test results with the metalworking fluid series of the German Contact Dermatitis Research Group (DKG).

Based on the information of the interdisciplinary task force on allergy diagnostics in the metal branch, in 2001, the German Contact Dermatitis Research Group (DKG) compiled two metalworking fluid (MWF) test series with currently and previously used components, respectively. After 2 years of patch testing, we present results obtained with these series, based on data of the Information Network of Departments of Dermatology (IVDK). 251 metalworkers who were patch tested because of suspected MWF dermatitis in 2002 and 2003 were included in this retrospective data analysis. The object of the paper concerns a consistent formulation of the classical Signorini's theory regarding the frictionless unilateral contact problem between two elastic bodies in the hypothesis of small displacements and strains. In this work, it is shown how the convolution analysis of chronoamperograms permits the observation of the uncompensated resistance and the natural convection effects on the electrochemical response of potassium ferrocyanide. The uncompensated resistance causes the current intensity to follow the Cottrell equation only after a certain critical time. The convolution of chronoamperograms worked out at different integration times shows a maximum when this time is long enough. Sanitizing food contact surfaces by the use of essential oils

Chemical sanitizers continue to be widely used by the food industry to disinfect food contact surfaces. However, as some chemical disinfectants have been reported to produce unhealthy by-products, alternative and natural compounds need to be investigated. To this end, nine essential oils (EOs) were screened to develop a natural sanitizing solution (SAN) for disinfecting food contact surfaces.
