Sequence features and evolutionary mechanisms in the chicken avidin gene family
2001
The chicken avidin gene family comprises the avidin gene (avd) and several homologous avidin-related genes (avrs). The sequences of the avr genes are nearly identical to each other but exhibit nonrandomly distributed, frequently nonsynonymous nucleotide substitutions compared to avd. In this study, we determined the genetic distances and the phylogeny of the avd and avr genes and found differences between different exons and introns. Our results suggest the involvement of biased gene conversion in the evolution of the genes. Furthermore, one of the genes was identified as a putative fusion gene. The occurrence of both gene conversion and recombination supports the models suggesting a common…
A Portable Readout System for Microstrip Silicon Sensors (ALIBAVA)
2009
A readout system for microstrip silicon sensors has been developed. This system is able to measure the collected charge in one or two microstrip silicon sensors by reading out all the channels of the sensor(s), up to 256. The system can operate either with non-irradiated and irradiated sensors as well as with n-type and p-type microstrip silicon sensors. Heavily irradiated sensors will be used at the Super Large Hadron Collider, so this system can be used to research the performance of microstrip silicon sensors in conditions as similar as possible to the Super Large Hadron Collider operating conditions. The system has two main parts: a hardware part and a software part. The hardware part a…
Determination of absolute internal conversion coefficients using the SAGE spectrometer
2016
Abstract A non-reference based method to determine internal conversion coefficients using the SAGE spectrometer is carried out for transitions in the nuclei of 154 Sm, 152 Sm and 166 Yb. The Normalised-Peak-to-Gamma method is in general an efficient tool to extract internal conversion coefficients. However, in many cases the required well-known reference transitions are not available. The data analysis steps required to determine absolute internal conversion coefficients with the SAGE spectrometer are presented. In addition, several background suppression methods are introduced and an example of how ancillary detectors can be used to select specific reaction products is given. The results o…
β-decay ofO13
2005
The beta decay of O-13 has been studied at the IGISOL facility of the Jyvaskyla accelerator centre (Finland). By developing a low-energy isotope-separated beam of O-13 and using a modern segmented charged-particle detector array an improved measurement of the delayed proton spectrum was possible. Protons with energy up to more than 12 MeV are measured and the corresponding log(ft) values extracted. A revised decay scheme is constructed. The connection to molecular states and the shell model is discussed.

Mobility of Cr and V in Spent Oil Shale: Impact of Thermal Treatment
2013
Abstract Spent oil shale samples were evaluated for potential chromium and vanadium release upon aerobic combustion used in power generation, or anaerobic retorting used in shale oil recovery. Combusted samples released more Cr than retorted or raw samples due to chromate formation. The behavior of vanadium was just opposite in that more V was released from retorted than from aerobically combusted samples, probably due to reduced vanadyl cation formation.
Backward frequency doubling of near infrared picosecond pulses.
2014
We report on backward second-harmonic generation using ps laser pulses in congruent lithium niobate with 3.2 µm periodic poling. Three resonant peaks were measured between 1530 and 1730 nm, corresponding to 16th, 17th and 18th quasi-phase-matching orders in the backward configuration, with a conversion efficiency of 4.75 x 10(-5%)/W for the 16th order. We could also discriminate the contributions from inverted domains randomized in duty-cycle.
Managing Group and Phase Birefringence for Nonlinear Optics in Photonic Crystal Fibers
2006
A novel design of birefringent photonic crystal fibers with stress applying parts permits to manage the wavelength dependence of group and phase birefringence. Applications to vector frequency conversion and soliton polarization instabilities are discussed.
Ultraviolet generation in periodically poled Lithium Tantalate waveguides
2008
We demonstrate ultraviolet generation in lithium tantalate channel waveguides for frequency doubling via quasi-phase-matching. The samples, proton exchanged and nanostructured by electric-field assisted surface periodic poling with domains as deep as 40 μm, yield continuous wave light at 365.4 nm with conversion efficiencies larger than 7.5% W-1 cm-2.
