Contrast perception in digitized panoramic radiographs compared with their film-based origin
2002
Abstract Objectives. We sought to compare the visual image quality of film-based and digitized panoramic radiographs through use of a hole-containing test wedge. Study Design. An aluminum wedge containing 100 cells, of which 90 were given shallow holes, was exposed in the film-based Orthophos CD panoramic unit. Two radiographs subjectively exhibiting optimum contrast were selected. Films were digitized with a charge-coupled device flatbed scanner at 300 dpi. Films and digitized images were rated cellwise by 2 similar groups of 50 observers each with respect to spot perception. Results. The mean sensitivity was 0.26 ± 0.09 for film and 0.20 ± 0.07 for digitized images (P =.000), with a prono…
Experimental study on B-spline-based modulation schemes applied in multilevel inverters for electric drive applications
2019
This work presents the design, simulation, and experimental validation of new B-Spline-based modulation techniques applied to a Multilevel Power Inverter (MPI), particularly focusing the attention on the harmonic content of the output voltages of the inverter. Simulation and experimental results are proposed and discussed, mainly describing the potential benefits, such as the increase of the multi-level operation of the converter, and drawbacks (low-order harmonics) related to the adoption of B-Spline functions for multilevel inverters applied in the field of electrical drives.
Richiedere a un detenuto di fornire prova dell’avvenuta conversione viola la sua libertà di religione
2021
This short contribution provides a comment of the judgment of the European Court on Human Rights in the case of Neagu v. Romania (application no. 21969/15), in which the Court found a violation of Article 9 (right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion) of the European Convention on Human Rights. The case concerned a prisoner who had converted to Islam while in detention. He complained of the refusal of the Romanian authorities to provide him with pork-free meals, in accordance with the precepts of his religion, unless he furnished proof that he was an adherent of that religion. The Court found that, bearing in mind the provisions introduced by the order of the Ministry of Justice r…
Frequency conversion of propagating surface plasmon polaritons by organic molecules
2008
We demonstrate frequency conversion of surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) by utilizing the coupling between organic dye molecules and SPP. Launching of SPPs into a plasmonic waveguide is done in two ways: by optically excited molecules and by quantum dots (QDs). QDs are demonstrated to overcome the major problem of bleaching occurring with molecules. The SPP propagates tens of micrometers and clear frequency conversion is observed in the SPP spectrum after passing an area of converter molecules. The use of molecules and QDs as elements of all-plasmonic devices has the potential for high integration and use of self-assembly in fabrication. Peer reviewed

POSS-Al-porphyrin-imidazolium cross-linked network as catalytic bifunctional platform for the conversion of CO2 with epoxides
2023
Two heterogeneous catalysts were prepared with the aim of following the promising path of CO2 fixation into epoxides. The synthetic procedure involves a radical copolymerization of an octavinylsilsesquioxane as inorganic core building block and tetrastyrylporphyrin aluminum chloride monomer (TSP-AlCl) in presence (POSS-TSP-AlCl-imiBr) or in absence (POSS-TSP-AlCl) of a bis-vinylimidazolium bromide salt (bis-imiBr), in order to investigate if the bifunctional heterogeneous material can display better catalytic performance than the separate species. All the solids were fully characterized and tested in the synthesis of cyclic carbonates starting from CO2 and several epoxides. The synergic coo…
A cluster of cuticle protein genes of Drosophila melanogaster at 65A: sequence, structure and evolution
1997
0016-6731 (Print) Journal Article Research Support, Non-U.S. Gov't Research Support, U.S. Gov't, Non-P.H.S.; A 36-kb genomic DNA segment of the Drosophila melanogaster genome containing 12 clustered cuticle genes has been mapped and partially sequenced. The cluster maps at 65A 5-6 on the left arm of the third chromosome, in agreement with the previously determined location of a putative cluster encompassing the genes for the third instar larval cuticle proteins LCP5, LCP6 and LCP8. This cluster is the largest cuticle gene cluster discovered to date and shows a number of surprising features that explain in part the genetic complexity of the LCP5, LCP6 and LCP8 loci. The genes encoding LCP5 a…

Perovskite CH3NH3PbI3–XClx Solar Cells. Experimental Study of Initial Degradation Kinetics and Fill Factor Spectral Dependence
2021
The main drawback of the methylammonium lead halide perovskite solar cells is their degradation in ambient atmosphere. To investigate ambient-air-induced cell degradation, spec-tral dependencies of open-circuit voltage (VOC), fill factor (FF) and the power conversion effi-ciency (PCE) have been acquired (for the first time reported in literature). Our custom-made measurement system allowed us to perform measurements of the above-mentioned entities in situ directly in vacuum during and after thermal deposition of the elec-trode. We also studied how these parameters in vacuum changed after cell exposure to ambient air for 85 min (50 nm top electrode) and for 180 min (100 nm top Ag electrode).…
A didactic experiment and model of a flat-plate solar collector
2011
We report on an experiment performed with a home-made flat-plate solar collector, carried out together with high-school students. To explain the experimental results, we propose a model that describes the heating process of the solar collector. The model accounts quantitatively for the experimental data. We suggest that solar-energy topics should be included in school programmes to give students the opportunity to gain experience with solar energy and increase their awareness of the benefits that can be obtained from this remarkable and renewable energy source.
