Fully Covariant and Conformal Formulation of the Z4 System Compared to the BSSN Formulation in Spherical Symmetry

We have generalized a covariant and conformal version of the Z4 system of the Einstein equations by adopting a reference metric approach, that we denote as fCCZ4, well suited for curvilinear as well as Cartesian coordinates. We implement this formalism in spherical polar coordinates under the assumption of spherical symmetry using a partially-implicit Runge-Kutta (PIRK) method, without using any regularization scheme, and show that our code can evolve both vacuum and non-vacuum spacetimes without encountering instabilities. General relativistic neutrino transport using spectral methods

We present a new code, Lorene's Ghost (for Lorene's gravitational handling of spectral transport) developed to treat the problem of neutrino transport in supernovae with the use of spectral methods. First, we derive the expression for the nonrelativistic Liouville operator in doubly spherical coordinates (r, theta, phi, epsilon, Theta, Phi)$, and further its general relativistic counterpart. We use the 3 + 1 formalism with the conformally flat approximation for the spatial metric, to express the Liouville operator in the Eulerian frame. Comparison between the fCCZ4 and BSSN formulations of Einstein equations in spherical polar coordinates

Recently, we generalized a covariant and conformal version of the Z4 system of the Einstein equations using a reference metric approach, that we denote as fCCZ4. We successfully implemented and tested this approach in a 1D code that uses spherical coordinates and assumes spherical symmetry, obtaining from one to three orders of magnitude reduction of the Hamiltonian constraint violations with respect to the BSSN formulation in tests involving neutron star spacetimes. In this work, we show preliminary results obtained with the 3D implementation of the fCCZ4 formulation in a fully 3D code using spherical polar coordinates.

X-rays from protostellar jets: emission from continuous flows

Recently X-ray emission from protostellar jets has been detected with both XMM-Newton and Chandra satellites, but the physical mechanism which can give rise to this emission is still unclear. We performed an extensive exploration of a wide space of the main parameters influencing the jet/ambient interaction. A finite difference time domain model for the Titan ionosphere Schumann resonances

[1] This paper presents a numerical approach to model the electrical properties of Titan's atmosphere. The finite difference time domain technique is applied to model the atmosphere of Saturn's satellite in order to determine Schumann resonant frequencies and electromagnetic field distributions at the extremely low frequency range. Spherical coordinates are employed, and periodic boundary conditions are implemented in order to exploit the symmetry in rotation of the celestial body. Gravitational waves in dynamical spacetimes with matter content in the fully constrained formulation

The Fully Constrained Formulation (FCF) of General Relativity is a novel framework introduced as an alternative to the hyperbolic formulations traditionally used in numerical relativity. The FCF equations form a hybrid elliptic-hyperbolic system of equations including explicitly the constraints. Determination of A(FB)(b) using jet charge measurements in Z decays

An improved measurement of the forward-backward asymmetry in Z --> b (b) over bar decays is presented, based on a sample of 4.1 million hadronic Z decays collected by ALEPH between 1991 and 1995. Data are analysed as a function of polar angle of the event axis and b purity. The event tagging efficiency and mean b-jet hemisphere charge are measured directly from data. From the measured forward-backward jet charge asymmetry, the b quark asymmetry at root s= m(Z) is determined to be: A(FB)(b) = 0.1017 +/- 0.0032(syst.) +/- 0.0032(syst.). Leptonicμandτdecays: Mass effects, polarization effects, andO(α)radiative corrections

We calculate the radiative corrections to the unpolarized and the four polarized spectrum and rate functions in the leptonic decay of a polarizedinto a polarized electron. The new feature of our calculation is that we keep the mass of the final state electron finite which is mandatory if one wants to investigate the threshold region of the decay. Analytical results are given for the energy spectrum and the polar angle distribution of the final state electron whose longitudinal and transverse polarization is calculated. Measurements of the muon component of extensive air showers at 320m.w.e. underground

Abstract The ALEPH detector at LEP has been supplemented with five scintillator telescopes to measure the muon component of cosmic ray air showers underground. The emphasis of the present analysis of a new data set is to measure coincidences over distances up to about 1 km which are sensitive to the forward production of hadronic interactions and the chemical composition of primary cosmic rays in the energy range around 1015 eV. First results indicate that the observed decoherence curve of muons is compatible with a light primary composition and the arrival directions of muons show no obvious clustering in galactic coordinates.
