Si analizzano le non sempre consonanti spuinte della mercatura catalana e della monarchia, le relazioni fra politica di potenza dei sovrani aragonesi e esigenze diplomatiche legate alle relazioni con la consolidata potenza ottomana e con la Chiesa romana. Si rileva la forte differenza di atteggiamento della monarchia iberica rispetto alla politica delle città mercantili italiane. Si sottolinea la portata del fenomeno delle migrazioni greca e albanese verso la Sicilia e l'Italia meridionale in relazione alla politica militare di Alfonso V nell'area balcanica.
