The article analyses unpublished instructions written by a vice-prior of the Order of St. John in the late seventeenth century. They were directed at the conventual chaplains providing religious support to knights, soldiers and crew (including slave rowers) during the naval campaigns of the Order galleys, the so-called “caravane”. On one hand the work was inspired by literature on the “Christian soldier” (whose authors were often Jesuits), on the other it brought together the spiritual care issues directly experienced by the same chaplains on board. La biografia di Filippo, che II si colloca nel contesto di un’Europa travagliata dalle guerre di religione e che si apriva al mondo, può essere letta attraverso gli occhi dei cronisti del tempo che spesso dipinsero il "rey prudente" come un sovrano pacifico nonostante le innumerevoli guerre da lui condotte nel corso di un lungo regno, che abbracciò quasi tutta la seconda metà del XVI secolo. Fondamentale è la ricostruzione della dimensione dinastica e familiare entro cui si svolgeva la vita politica nella Spagna e nell’Europa del XVI secolo, come anche la politica confessionale del sovrano, tesa alla difesa a oltranza del Cattolicesimo e alla lotta contro gli eretici e gli infedeli.

Any study of the Palatine Chapel in Palermo should take into account the two contexts of Spanish Caesaropapism in Sicily, namely a Church established by Habsburg rulers with the monarch at its head, and international relationships between the Spanish Monarchy, France, and the Holy See. This chapel, situated right at the heart of the Royal Palace – seat of both the Viceroy and the tribunals of the Kingdom – was actually a sort of miniature cathedral for the Spanish king-pope (as ecclesiastical patron and papal legate), and the fact that it was dedicated to Saint Peter clearly evoked the papal Basilica of the same name in Rome. The starting point of this article is a topic that features in the synoptic Gospels (Mt 22, 37; Mc 12, 29-31; Lc 10, 27) and is presented as the most essential among Jesus’ precepts: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind”. The three terms that are mentioned here – heart, soul, and mind – are of prominent importance both in the Christian and Islamic spiritual traditions. We compare them and the respective traditions of commentary both on a lexicographical and exegetical level. Can we say that there is a "mystic" in the "adoration" revamped by Jean-Luc Nancy in his deconstruction of Christianity? Following this question the author traces a connection between deconstruction and mystic and between deconstruction and phenomenology. From the point of view Nancy's mystical vocation of "L'Adoration" can be summarized by the excess of meaning proper of every being insomuch as it is allowed to appear in its irrepressible distinction.

The several spiritual and ecclesiastical powers held by the Crown in the Kingdom of Sicily during the early modern age was very often translated into jurisdictional competences precisely among the ecclesiastical courts: each of them tried, indeed, to extend his own prerogatives over forists and crimes in harm of the others, putting its "falcem in alienam messem".
