The importance of standard operating procedures in physical fitness assessment: a brief review

2022

Abstract Background Physical fitness status is a key aspect of health and, consequently, it is important to create and adopt appropriate interventions to maintain or improve it, and assess it using valid measures. While in other testing contexts, standard operating procedures (SOPs) are commonly and widely adopted, in physical fitness testing, a variety of unstandardized testing protocols are proposed. Aims The topic of this review was to evaluate the existing literature on SOPs in physical fitness assessment and to provide guidelines on how SOPs could be created and adopted. Method The electronic databases PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus were screened and original, peer-reviewed studies …

A computationally fast alternative to cross-validation in penalized Gaussian graphical models

2015

We study the problem of selection of regularization parameter in penalized Gaussian graphical models. When the goal is to obtain the model with good predicting power, cross validation is the gold standard. We present a new estimator of Kullback-Leibler loss in Gaussian Graphical model which provides a computationally fast alternative to cross-validation. The estimator is obtained by approximating leave-one-out-cross validation. Our approach is demonstrated on simulated data sets for various types of graphs. The proposed formula exhibits superior performance, especially in the typical small sample size scenario, compared to other available alternatives to cross validation, such as Akaike's i…

Statistical relationship between hardness of drinking water and cerebrovascular mortality in Valencia: a comparison of spatiotemporal models

2003

The statistical detection of environmental risk factors in public health studies is usually difficult due to the weakness of their effects and their confounding with other covariates. Small area geographical data bring the opportunity of observing health response in a wide variety of exposure values. Temporal sequences of these geographical datasets are crucial to gaining statistical power in detecting factors. The spatiotemporal models required to perform the statistical analysis have to allow for spatial and temporal correlations, which are more easily modelled via hierarchical structures of hidden random factors. These models have produced important research activity during the last deca…

Selecting the tuning parameter in penalized Gaussian graphical models

2019

Penalized inference of Gaussian graphical models is a way to assess the conditional independence structure in multivariate problems. In this setting, the conditional independence structure, corresponding to a graph, is related to the choice of the tuning parameter, which determines the model complexity or degrees of freedom. There has been little research on the degrees of freedom for penalized Gaussian graphical models. In this paper, we propose an estimator of the degrees of freedom in $$\ell _1$$ -penalized Gaussian graphical models. Specifically, we derive an estimator inspired by the generalized information criterion and propose to use this estimator as the bias term for two informatio…

A stochastic method for robustness analysis in sorting problems

2009

ELECTRE TRI is a multiple criteria decision aiding sorting method with a history of successful real-life applications. In ELECTRE TRI, values for certain parameters have to be provided. We propose a new method, SMAA-TRI, that is based on stochastic multicriteria acceptability analysis (SMAA), for analyzing the stability of such parameters. The stability analysis can be used for deriving robust conclusions. SMAA-TRI allows ELECTRE TRI to be used with uncertain, arbitrarily distributed values for weights, the lambda cutting level, and profiles. The method consists of analyzing finite spaces of arbitrarily distributed parameter values. Monte Carlo simulation is applied in this in order to desc…

Structural analysis of the back supporting structure of the DEMO WCLL outboard blanket

2017

Abstract Within the framework of EUROfusion R&D activities an intense research campaign has been carried out at the University of Palermo, in close cooperation with ENEA Brasimone, in order to investigate the thermo-mechanical performances of the outboard segment Back-Supporting Structure (BSS) of the DEMO Water-Cooled Lithium Lead breeding blanket (WCLL). In particular, the configuration of the outboard segment BSS, purposely set-up by the WCLL project team during 2015 according to the blanket “multi-module system” concept, has been taken into account in order to study its steady state thermo-mechanical behaviour, paying attention to the simulation of both modules-BSS and BSS-vacuum vessel…

Reusing coffee ground waste in manufacture of novel sustainable product

2021

Coffee is one of the most important commodities in the world. Every year the coffee industry is responsible for generating a large amount of wastes, mainly Spent Coffee Grounds (SCGs). The traditional disposal of this residue into the environment should be avoided due to its toxicity and organic character. Because of the decrease in nonrenewable natural resources, society has been making a huge effort to valorize and reuse several types of wastes in the production of novel sustainable products. In this regard, construction is considered one of the most energy-intensive sectors. As a consequence, the goals of sustainability and energy efficiency must be prosecuted to achieve the results expe…

A multi-methodology and sustainability-supporting framework for implementation and assessment of a holistic building renovation

Consumers’ criteria to select food retailers revisited in the current environment.

2022

Food retailing is undergoing major transformations, particularly in France. Hypermarkets are declining, hard-discount stores are gentrifying, e-commerce is mixing with physical distribution, convenience stores are gaining presence and market shares, other forms are emerging: short, collaborative or cooperative channels. Consumers are clearly changing their buying patterns. How do people currently select a form of sale? Are there any changes in their selection criteria or in their perception of food retailing that can explain that they are turning away from hypermarkets to go to more meaningful places? The objective of this research is to revisit the consumers’ criteria to select a form of s…

Influence of the evolutionary optimization parameters on the optimal topology

2016

Topological optimization can be considered as one of the most general types of structural optimization. Between all known topological optimization techniques, the Evolutionary Structural Optimization represents one of the most efficient and easy to implement approaches. Evolutionary topological optimization is based on a heuristic general principle which states that, by gradually removing portions of inefficient material from an assigned domain, the resulting structure will evolve towards an optimal configuration. Usually, the initial continuum domain is divided into finite elements that may or may not be removed according to the chosen efficiency criteria and other parameters like the spee…
