Clinical prognostic factors in advanced epithelioid haemangioendothelioma: a retrospective case series analysis within the Italian Rare Cancers Netwo…
2021
Background This multicentric, retrospective study conducted within the Italian Rare Cancer Network describes clinical features and explores their possible prognostic relevance in patients with advanced epithelioid haemangioendothelioma (EHE) started on surveillance. Patients and methods We collected data on adult patients with molecularly confirmed, advanced EHE consecutively referred at five sarcoma reference centres between January 2010 and June 2018, with no evidence of progressive disease (PD) and started on surveillance. Overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) univariable and multivariable Cox analyses were performed. In the latter, due to the low number of cases and …
Cetuximab plus cisplatin–5-fluorouracil versus cisplatin–5-fluorouracil alone in first-line metastatic squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus: a ra…
2009
Abstract Background This study assessed the activity of the mAb cetuximab in combination with cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) in advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. Patients and methods For a maximum of six 29-day cycles, patients received cisplatin 100 mg/m2, day 1, plus 5-FU 1000 mg/m2, days 1–5 (CF), either alone or in combination with cetuximab (CET–CF; 400 mg/m2 initial dose followed by 250 mg/m2 weekly thereafter). The primary end point was tumor response. Tumor material was obtained for analysis of KRAS mutation status. Results Sixty-two eligible patients were included, 32 receiving CET–CF and 30 CF. Cetuximab did not exacerbate grade 3/4 toxicity, except for rash (6% ve…
Safety and Efficacy of Sorafenib in Patients With Advanced Hepatocellular Carcinoma in Consideration of Concomitant Stage of Liver Cirrhosis
2009
GOALS AND BACKGROUND: The multikinase inhibitor sorafenib provides survival benefit for patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and liver cirrhosis (LCI) Child-Pugh A. We report our experiences with sorafenib in advanced HCC, particularly in patients with LCI Child-Pugh B/C, where only limited data are available in regard to safety and efficacy of sorafenib. METHODS: Thirty-four patients with advanced HCC were treated with sorafenib regardless of liver function and prior anticancer therapy. Adverse events (AEs) were graded using Common Toxicity Criteria version 3.0, tumor response was assessed according to Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors. RESULTS: Fifteen patients…
Hepatocellular carcinoma in Child's A cirrhosis: a retrospective analysis of matched pairs following liver transplantation vs. liver resection accord…
2013
This is the first matched pair analysis on the puzzling clinical problem of whether to perform liver transplantation (LT) or liver resection (LR) for Child's A hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients. A total of 201 patients diagnosed with HCC and Child's A liver cirrhosis were treated with LT transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) or LR between 1998 and 2012. To achieve the most accurate study design, two groups of 57 patients were matched retrospectively according to their tumor characteristics detected by the initial computerized tomography (CT) scan. Sixteen of 57 LT candidates were not transplanted due to tumor progress during pre-treatment (TACE). Nevertheless, the retrospective analy…
A Phase I dose-escalation study of third-line regorafenib with trifluridine/tipiracil in metastatic colorectal cancer
2021
Aim: To determine a recommended Phase II dose of the oral fluoropyrimidine trifluridine/tipiracil (FTD/TPI) combined with the multi-kinase inhibitor regorafenib (REG) in refractory metastatic colorectal cancer patients. Materials & methods: A conventional 3 + 3 dose finding design was used. FTD/TPI was administered on days 1–5 and 8–12 of a 28-day cycle, REG on days 2–22. Two dose levels were used: FTD/TPI 25 mg/m2 b.i.d. + REG 120 mg/d, then escalated to FTD/TPI 35 mg/m2 b.i.d. + REG 120 mg/d. Results: In total, 12 patients were treated at two dose levels. Three dose-limiting toxicities were observed; all were grade 3 hypertension causally attributed to REG. Recommended Phase II dose …
Fluoride - an adjunctive therapeutic agent for periodontal disease? Evidence from a cross-sectional study
2008
Objective: To assess the influence of the water fluoride level on periodontal status, by determining the periodontal health status of subjects residing in low, optimum and high fluoride areas. Study design: A cross sectional survey was carried out on 967 adults aged 35-44 years old, from the Udaipur district of India. A stratified cluster random sampling technique was implemented in order to collect a representative sample from low (3ppm) areas, based on the fluoride concentration in drinking water. Periodontal status was assessed in accordance to WHO criteria. The Chi-square test was used to compare proportions, and logistic regression analysis was used to determine the contribution of wat…
Evaluation of erlotinib treatment response in non-small cell lung cancer using metabolic and anatomic criteria
2016
BACKGROUND: In this paper the clinical value of PET for early prediction of tumor response to erlotinib in patients with advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) after failure of at least one prior chemotherapy regimen is evaluated. The aim was to compare the early metabolic treatment response using European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) 1999 recommendations and PET Response Criteria in Solid Tumors (PERCIST), and the standard treatment response using Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST). METHODS: Twenty patients with stage IV NSCLCwere enrolled prospectively. PET/CT studies were performed before, then 48 hours, and 45 days after…
Risk factors for temporomandibular disorder: Binary logistic regression analysis
2013
Objectives: To analyze the influence of socioeconomic and demographic factors (gender, economic class, age and marital status) on the occurrence of temporomandibular disorder. Study Design: One hundred individuals from urban areas in the city of Recife (Brazil) registered at Family Health Units was examined using Axis I of the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/ TMD) which addresses myofascial pain and joint problems (disc displacement, arthralgia, osteoarthritis and oeste - oarthrosis). The Brazilian Economic Classification Criteria (CCEB) was used for the collection of socioeconomic and demographic data. Then, it was categorized as Class A (high social class…
Bipolar II disorders in six first-degree relatives
1993
As proposed by Dunner et al (1976), the distinction of bipolar !! disorder from other effective disorders has been included in Research Diagnostic Criteria (RDC) (Spitzer et al 1978) but not in DSM-IiI-R or ICD 10 (APA 1987, WHO 1991). Family studies indicate that bipolar 1I disorder might represent a distinct diagnostic entity with a common genetic background (Gershon et al 1982; Dunner 1983; Endicott et al 1985; Andreasen et al 1987). Familial aggregation, diagnostic stability, and course of illness represent external validators for nosologic classifications (Kendler 1990). Therefore, pedigrees with multiple cases of diagnostically stable bipolar Ii disorder without cases of bipolar 1 dis…
Application of an oral health-related quality of life questionnaire in primary care patients with orofacial pain and temporomandibular disorders
2013
Objectives: To examine whether patients who report orofacial pain (OP) and temporomandibular disorders (TMD) have a poorer perception of their oral health-related quality of life and, if so, to what extent, and to analyze the association between oral health perception, sociodemographic variables and reported pain duration. Study Design: 407 patients treated at the OP and TMD units in the Healthcare District of Cordoba, Spain, diagnosed following the standard criteria accepted by the scientific community – the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD) – were administered the Spanish version of the Oral Health Impact Profile questionnaire (OHIP-14). Bivariate and …
