Length-Weight Relationships of 52 Species from the South of Sicily (Central Mediterranean Sea)

The Length-Weight relationships (LWRs) of 52 species (14 never reported before) of fishes, crustaceans and cephalopods living on the shelf and upper slope off Southern Sicily are provided. Data were collected in the framework of the International bottom trawl survey in the Mediterranean (MEDITS) in the South of Sicily (Central Mediterranean), covering a time frame ranging from 2012 to 2019. Linear regressions were significant for all species (p < 0.05) with R2 values ranging from 0.86 to 0.99. Ecology of the glacial relict macrocrustacean Gammaracanthus lacustris, a rare inhabitant of deep Fennoscandian lakes, is poorly understood. We studied the life cycle and trophic position of this cold‐stenothermic amphipod in Lake Paasivesi, eastern Finland. The study is based on intensive sampling and analyses of fatty acid composition as well as stable carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotope ratios. Both day and night, the G. lacustris population occurred at depths below 25 m at temperatures 40 mm and live up to 4 years. Anaesthesia of animals may be useful for different purposes, particularly for veterinary reasons or in experimental research, for manipulation or treatment of immobilized but alive animals. Its use in crustaceans is not uncommon, but it has never been described for Ostracoda. We provide brief and preliminary guidelines on the use of the tricaine mesylate (MS-222) on the widespread freshwater ostracod Eucypris virens and we show that this compound is an effective anaesthetic used as a bath treatment at minimum concentrations of 500 mg L-1. Unusual oxygen binding behavior of a 24-meric crustacean hemocyanin.

Abstract Hemocyanins from Crustacea usually are found as 1 × 6 or 2 × 6-meric assemblies. An exception is the hemocyanin isolated from thalassinidean shrimps where the main component is a 24-meric structure. Our analysis of oxygen binding data of the thalassinidean shrimp Upogebia pusilla based on a three-state MWC-model revealed that despite the 24-meric structure the functional properties can be described very well based on the hexamer as allosteric unit. Isolation and characterization of microsatellite markers in the portunid crab Liocarcinus depurator using FIASCO and 454 next-generation sequencing

The portunid crab Liocarcinus depurator is the dominant decapod crustacean present on mud bottoms of the continental shelf of the Mediterranean Sea. In order to better describe its genetic structure, a total of 11 microsatellites were isolated and tested in 28 L. depurator individuals from the Mediterranean locality of Tarragona. Initially, microsatellite isolation was carried out using the FIASCO methodology, but only 2 useful primer pairs could be designed. Given the low yield obtained, an alternative method based on 454 next-generation sequencing was assayed, which provided excellent results and from which another 9 primer pairs gave positive genotyping.
