Intravenous Contrast Agent in Abdominal CT: Is It Really Needed to Identify the Cause of Bowel Obstruction? Proof of Concept
2019
Background. To compare sensitivity of unenhanced computed tomography (CT) and contrast-enhanced CT for the identification of the etiology of bowel obstruction.Materials and Methods. We retrospectively evaluated abdominal CT scans of patients operated for bowel obstruction from March 2013 to October 2017. Two radiologists evaluated CT scans before and after contrast agent in two reading sessions. Then, we calculated sensitivity of CT in the diagnosis of bowel obstruction and determined in which cases the etiology of bowel obstruction was detected on both unenhanced and enhanced CT or on enhanced CT only. The reference standard was defined as the final diagnosis obtained after surgery. Results…

Enseñanza de la Mecánica con enfoque Ciencia Tecnología y Sociedad utilizando los Accidentes de Tránsito
2020
Taking into account the disinterest of the students in secondary and university education towards physics, this communication proposes a teaching form, based on the approach, science, technology and society (STS) that develops from the disciplinary interaction of the physics with forensic science. Based on the above, a didactic unit was designed that articulates physical concepts to contextual elements of traffic accidents. This is applied to two groups of students from teacher training programs in Natural Sciences and Mathematics. To evaluate it, a pre-post design is used. In the comparison of these two tests, important contributions are found in understanding the mechanical phenomena in t…
E26The effects of LIPUS on ctDNA release in the medium of NSCLC cell lines
2017
Low Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound (LIPUS) application has been shown to have an encouraging effect in inducing a transient pore formation through cellular membranes. This permeability condition has been demonstrated to be useful in enhancing gene and drug delivery. Nowadays, in the management of NSCLC patients, the use of liquid biopsy has entered the clinical practice. One of the main limits in the analysis of circulating tumor DNA is the low concentration rate of nucleic acids in body fluids. Ultrasound stimulation (US) has been recently demonstrated to be effective for the release of specific circulating tumor biomarkers in many mouse models. We demonstrated the role of US in inducing the …
Differential expression levels of urokinase-type plasminogen activator and cathepsin D in locally advanced laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma: Clinica…
2002
The expression levels and the prognostic impact of urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) and cathepsin D (CD) were evaluated in patients with locally advanced laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC). uPA and CD protein levels were determined by immunoluminometric or immunoenzymatic assays in the cytosol of paired sets of tumor tissues and corresponding adjacent normal mucosa (NLM) from 57 patients with stage III/IV LSCC and were correlated with a number of clinicobiological parameters of this tumor including anatomical site, tumor grade, nodal status, clinical stage, DNA ploidy, proliferation rate, and patient outcome. Median uPA levels were significantly higher in LSCC than in NLM (…
Hepatocellular Carcinoma Presenting at Contrast-Enhanced Multi–Detector-Row Computed Tomography or Gadolinium-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging as …
2012
OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to measure growth rate and to determine the optimal interval time for imaging follow-up of hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs) presenting at multi-detector-row computed tomography (MDCT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as small, indeterminate lesions. METHODS: We included patients with cirrhosis with HCC initially presenting as indeterminate lesion of 2 cm or less at MDCT or MRI August 2005 to August 2009 and with available imaging follow-up. Measures of tumor growth included tumor volume doubling time (TVDT), tumor percentual diameter increase, and tumor percentual volume increase. RESULTS: We examined 48 patients (mean age, 64 years) with 69 HCCs…

Reevaluating the function of a transcription factor: MBF-1 as a sea urchin chromatin organizer ?
2014
The Zinc-finger MBF-1 factor is involved in the expression of the early histone genes during devel-opment of the sea urchin embryo (1, 2). In spite of being a transcription activator, the DNA-binding domain of MBF-1 shares high sequence similarity with that of the chromatin organizer CTCF of vertebrates and drosophila (3). On the other hand, extensive in silico analysis failed to identify the sea urchin CTCF ortholog (4). This led us to speculate that MBF-1 somehow could have co-opted the function of CTCF during evolution of the echinoderms. Since in vertebrates CTCF binds Hox chromatin, to support our hypothesis, we first identified high-score putative binding sequences for CTCF/MBF-1 with…
