L’Archeologia tra formazione e pratica: il ruolo dell’Università in Sicilia
2014
The relationship between university and political and social institutions in Sicily has undergone a deep transformation since the end of the '80s. Before that period, university, as a teaching and research structure, was deeply linked with political institutions dealing with the management and preservation of cultural heritage; these institutions, on the other hand, offered the main chances of employment for graduates in humanities and archaeology. After that period, university and politic have undertaken instead, completely different ways, especially in the field of cultural heritage, due to a different economic context and a wider ideological change. The role of the university as a place …
New trials in the consolidation of waterlogged archaeological wood with different acetone-carried products
2011
Some acetone-carried consolidants for waterlogged archaeological wood were tested in order to evaluate treatments able to save time and energy. In details, colophony (rosin), two esterified colophonies (Rosin 100® and Rosin 459®), a mixture of colophony with PEG 3400 and a vinyl acetate - vinyl versate copolymer (Vinavil 8020S®) were tested. The treatments were carried out at temperatures of 20 and 35 °C on waterlogged maritime pine, elm, oak and beech. The materials came from the archaeological Site of the ancient ships of Pisa (Tuscany, Italy) and were dated back to VII cent. BC II cent. AD. To evaluate the processes, equilibrium moisture content and dimensional stability of treated woo…
Mosaic floors of roman Villa del Casale: Principal component analysis on spectrophotometric and colorimetric data
2013
Abstract Spectrophotometric and colorimetric data obtained during a measurement campaign aimed at supporting the Roman "Villa del Casale" (Piazza Armerina, Sicily, Italy) conservation activities, are presented. Special attention was paid to the possible variation of the chromatic coordinates, possibly due to the interventions of cleaning, consolidation, and protection. Data have been analyzed by the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) statistical technique, with the attempt to investigate its role in data variability reduction and verify its effectiveness in interpreting the phenomena occurring on the mosaic surface of the Villa, through grouping the observations into homogenous clusters. Ef…
A methodological approach in the evaluation of the efficacy of treatments for the dimensional stabilisation of waterlogged archaeological wood
2010
Abstract The aim of the work is to set up a methodological approach to verify the effectiveness of the treatments of decayed waterlogged archaeological wood and to point out the proper thermo-hygrometric conditions for its preservation after treatment. The treatments were performed on wood samples of maritime pine (Pinus pinaster Aiton), oak (Quercus sp. caducifolia), elm (Ulmus cf. minor) and strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo L.), obtained from stems pertaining to the original vegetation found in the excavation site of the Ancient Ships in Pisa (Italy), and dated from seventh century BC to second century AD The utilised products were: Polyethylene Glycols (PEG) of various molecular weights, a…
Life after death: a physicochemical study of materials used by the ancient Maya in human bone ointments
2021
Ancient Maya believed in life after death. They used to prepare dead bodies during burial ceremonies whose purpose was to celebrate the dead and to help them passing through the way from earthly life to the beyond one. Bodies preparation included coloured scented body ointment application, with a deep symbolic connotation and probably also a conservative purpose. The aim of this research was to characterize pigments and binders used by ancient Maya in the preparation of body oint ments used to paint human bones. Emblematic painted bone samples from Xcambó (Maya archaeological site located in the municipality of Dzemul, in the Mexican state of Yucatán) were investigated through a non-destruc…

Arte contemporanea e sistema dell’arte. Una breve ricognizione
2018
The contribution explores the main players of the art system (artists, curators, critics, collectors, galleries, museums and art fairs) examining this phenomenon in reference to contemporary artists and movements and offering a reflection on the dynamics which regulate this complex and fascinating network.
2023
In the last years, serious games have become popular in media education as they are useful tools in engaging, motivating, and helping students learn. However, few studies investigate the long-term effects of game-based learning, and many scholars declare themself skeptical about the learning mediated by digital technology. This paper reflects on the importance of new media and serious games for young people belonging to the Net Generation as defined by Prensky. In particular, I support the idea that game-based learning reflects a broader change in our society, coinciding with the rise of the phenomenon of Gamification and the Homo Ludens paradigm. Apart from the limitations of technology-me…
