On the universality of void density profiles

The massive exploitation of cosmic voids for precision cosmology in the upcoming dark energy experiments, requires a robust understanding of their internal structure, particularly of their density profile. We show that the void density profile is insensitive to the void radius both in a catalogue of observed voids and in voids from a large cosmological simulation. However, the observed and simulated voids display remarkably different profile shapes, with the former having much steeper profiles than the latter. Sparsity can not be the main reason for this discrepancy, as we demonstrate that the profile can be recovered with reasonable accuracy even with very sparse samples of tracers. On the…

Possible detection of a radio event correlated with a γ-ray burst

COSMIC bursts of electromagnetic radiation, both isolated and in connection with other impulsive astrophysical phenomena, have been sought for many years1, with only one suggestive positive result2, until, in 1973, the discovery of γ-ray bursts3 of cosmic origin prompted a new series of observations4. In 1975 we started a systematic search for electromagnetic bursts at v.h.f. and u.h.f. The system, based at Medicina (Bologna, Italy), is semi-automatic and assures highly efficient data collection. A spectral hazy image database

We introduce a new database to promote visibility enhancement techniques intended for spectral image dehazing. SHIA (Spectral Hazy Image database for Assessment) is composed of two real indoor scenes M1 and M2 of 10 levels of fog each and their corresponding fog-free (ground-truth) images, taken in the visible and the near infrared ranges every 10 nm starting from 450 to 1000 nm. Constraining the neutrino emission of gravitationally lensed Flat-Spectrum Radio Quasars with ANTARES data

This paper proposes to exploit gravitational lensing effects to improve the sensitivity of neutrino telescopes to the intrinsic neutrino emission of distant blazar populations. This strategy is illustrated with a search for cosmic neutrinos in the direction of four distant and gravitationally lensed Flat-Spectrum Radio Quasars. The magnification factor is estimated for each system assuming a singular isothermal profile for the lens. Based on data collected from 2007 to 2012 by the ANTARES neutrino telescope, the strongest constraint is obtained from the lensed quasar B0218+357, providing a limit on the total neutrino luminosity of this source of 1.08×10^46 erg s-1. The positioning system of the ANTARES Neutrino Telescope

The ANTARES neutrino telescope, located 40km off the coast of Toulon in the Mediterranean Sea at a mooring depth of about 2475m, consists of twelve detection lines equipped typically with 25 storeys. Every storey carries three optical modules that detect Cherenkov light induced by charged secondary particles (typically muons) coming from neutrino interactions. As these lines are flexible structures fixed to the sea bed and held taut by a buoy, sea currents cause the lines to move and the storeys to rotate. Abstract The influence of lipid bilayer properties on a defined and sequence-specific transmembrane helix–helix interaction is not well characterized yet. To study the potential impact of changing bilayer properties on a sequence-specific transmembrane helix–helix interaction, we have traced the association of fluorescent-labeled glycophorin A transmembrane peptides by fluorescence spectroscopy in model membranes with varying lipid compositions. Singling out conserved modules (corresponding to connected sub-graphs) throughout protein-protein interaction networks of different organisms is a main issue in bioinformatics because of its potential applications in biology. A computer system to perform structure comparison using TOPS representations of protein structure

We describe the design and implementation of a fast topology-based method for protein structure comparison. The approach uses the TOPS topological representation of protein structure, aligning two structures using a common discovered pattern and generating measure of distance derived from an insert score. Heavy use is made of a constraint-based pattern-matching algorithm for TOPS diagrams that we have designed and described elsewhere (Bioinformatics 15(4) (1999) 317).
