Encapsulació lèxica i avaluació en el debat parlamentari

2018

Lexical encapsulation consists of a series of abstract unspecific nouns (fact, plan...) referring to predicative antecedents. This study is based on a corpus of parliamentary debate in English, Catalan and Spanish (PD) and deals with encapsulation as a complex lexical cohesion device which allows the addressor to evaluate the information of the debates in various ways. Our work tries to highlight the role of lexical encapsulation to reflect the addressor’s positioning with respect to the topic discussed, and to establish whether there are outstanding cross-linguistic differences. In order to delimit the diverse evaluative strategies, an approach from the perspective of prototype theory is a…

The use of blogs as social media tools of political communication : citizen journalism and public opinion 2.0

2019

In recent years, the political arena has been transformed into a space of public debate, a phenomenon which is both evident, yet hitherto unparalleled. A new range of digital social communication tools framed within the Web 2.0 era, with the blog often proving the tool of choice, has displaced the traditional pre-eminence of the communication scenario, as previously used by the mass media, thanks to a series of more interactive, diverse and credible dynamics which place the user at the very heart of the political discussion process and facilitates processes of social mobilization and collective civic action. This study takes the above situation as its point of departure and guiding principl…

Tragedia griega: una metáfora de debate público y participación democrática

2019

Athenian citizens deliberate in the assembly, but the theatre also becomes a place for public debate. In addition to being a consequence of economic or cultural aspects, democracy is a consequence of the development of a democratic imaginary. Located in that imaginary, Greek tragedies, regarded as «democratic myths», work to reaffirm Athenian democracy. Far from being dogmatic, the tragic myth explores the contradictions of social and personal life and implicitly or explicitly seeks their correction. This dramatic genre encourages participation from the spectator (citizen) that greatly exceeds the schematic reduction in Aristotelian theory of catharsis. Greek tragedy proposes the existence …

Gestational surrogacy. Ethical aspects / Maternità surrogata. Questioni etiche

2018

Gestational surrogacy is the practice that takes place when a woman becomes pregnant with a foetus with which she is not genetically related, and the eggs used to produce it come from a donor or the contracting mother, to whom the baby will be handed over after the birth. The woman acting as surrogate may be contracted commercially and remunerated for her service, or the surrogacy may be altruistic, a circumstance that arises when, generally, a member of the family or friend selflessly volunteers. The ethical debate lies in which should prevail: the hypothetical right of the parents to have a child, the reproductive rights of the woman, or even the good of the child itself. At the heart of …

2021

The chapter provides a comprehensive analysis of the development of policies on minority languages in Ukraine’s educational system, and in public debate, from 1991 to the present, combining legal analysis with the analysis of media discourses. Finding high politicization of the language-in-education issue in Ukraine, it maps key trajectories for the future course of Ukraine’s policies as to language in education.

Introduction: Border Memories

2019

This chapter introduces the context of the book. It first argues that the public debate about refugees and border crossing in Europe tends to be ahistorical, treating the situation as a sudden emergency appearing from nowhere. Thinking in terms of bordering, as a verb, underlines that borders require continuous symbolic and material construction and that borders have consequences. The perspective of bordering calls for attention to temporality. This volume adds the analytical lenses of memory and temporality to the critical and political project to think beyond the oppressive bordering taking place in Europe. By doing so, the book broadens the scope of border studies, which tend to focus on…

Economic, Social and Welfare Issues

2015

In late 2008 the three Baltic states were thrust into the heart of an intensely polarising international public debate on strategies to tackle the growing global economic crisis. The previous four years, following accession to the European Union (EU) in 2004, had witnessed rapid economic growth across the region, indeed the three recorded the highest GDP growth in the EU. Banks eased lending restrictions, foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows surged and Baltic businesses and consumers binged on cheap, readily available credit. Hubristic politicians increasingly talked of the inevitability of economic convergence with Western Europe. However, a gradual slowdown from late 2007 declined into…

Cost-effectiveness of prison system development - comparison of the European countries

2020

The possibility to achieve successful resocialization of former prisoners back into society is an ongoing public debate, making it challenging for policymakers to implement prisoner rehabilitation programs capable of maintaining the public safety while allocating public funds in the most efficient way. The main aim of this study is to examine what is necessary for an investment in prison system development to be justified. The hypothesis of this study suggests that such investment can be cost-effective by reducing crime and recidivism rates in the long term by ensuring proper rehabilitation of prisoners. Accordingly, this research compares various European countries regarding their imprison…
