Drift Time Measurement in the ATLAS Liquid Argon Electromagnetic Calorimeter using Cosmic Muons
2010
The ionization signals in the liquid argon of the ATLAS electromagnetic calorimeter are studied in detail using cosmic muons. In particular, the drift time of the ionization electrons is measured and used to assess the intrinsic uniformity of the calorimeter gaps and estimate its impact on the constant term of the energy resolution. The drift times of electrons in the cells of the second layer of the calorimeter are uniform at the level of 1.3% in the barrel and 2.8% in the endcaps. This leads to an estimated contribution to the constant term of (0.29-0.04+0.05)% in the barrel and (0.54-0.04+0.06)% in the endcaps. The same data are used to measure the drift velocity of ionization electrons …
Could the Combined Administration of Bone Antiresorptive Drug, Taxanes, and Corticosteroids Worsen Medication Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaws in Ca…
2018
The study presents a report of 58 metastatic cancer patients who developed osteonecrosis of the jaws after being treated with zoledronic acid and taxanes, plus corticosteroids. A retrospective analysis of data registered in the archives of two Italian osteonecrosis of the jaws treatment centers, who are based at the University of Messina and at the University of Palermo, was performed in order to study, in these patients, demographic data and characteristics such as frequency of cancer location, lines of therapy, frequency of cancer drugs, presence/absence of oral trigger, number, location, and stage of jaw osteonecrosis. It was found that the majority of patients developed advanced stages …
Ground and excited state dipole moments of coumarin laser dyes: Investigation by electro-optical absorption and emission methods
1997
Abstract Modified electro-optical absorption and emission methods were used to measure the dipole moments of four efficient coumarin laser dyes (CU1, CU4, CU120, CU334) in the equilibrated ground, excited Franck-Condon and equilibrated excited states. The measurements were performed in cyclohexane (CU1, CU120, CU334) and dioxane (all CUs) at room temperature. Our results show that the charge distribution in CU4 differs substantially from that in the other CUs. The equilibrated ground and excited state dipole moments measured by electro-optical methods are compared with those derived from other measurement techniques and from semiempirical calculations. The possible role of twisted intermole…
Acridine orange in a pumpkin-shaped macrocycle: Beyond solvent effects in the UV–visible spectra simulation of dyes
2010
Abstract We present simulation of the UV–visible spectra of acridine orange, a widely used photosensitizer for in vivo studies due to its highly environment-dependent spectroscopic properties. This dye has been investigated both in its protonated and neutral forms, either isolated or embedded in a pumpkin-shaped macromolecular cycle (cucurbit-7-uril), using time-dependent density functional theory techniques. To model this macromolecular cycle, two strategies are taken into account, allowing decoupling of the geometric and electrostatic influences of the host on the guest molecules. Experimental data are well-reproduced when using an embedding electrostatic technique, suggesting that such a…
Dynamical decoupling efficiency versus quantum non-Markovianity
2015
We investigate the relationship between non-Markovianity and the effectiveness of a dynamical decoupling protocol for qubits undergoing pure dephasing. We consider an exact model in which dephasing arises due to a bosonic environment with a spectral density of the Ohmic class. This is parametrised by an Ohmicity parameter by changing which we can model both Markovian and non-Markovian environments. Interestingly, we find that engineering a non-Markovian environment is detrimental to the efficiency of the dynamical decoupling scheme, leading to a worse coherence preservation. We show that each dynamical decoupling pulse reverses the flow of quantum information and, on this basis, we investig…
Stochastic response determination of structural systems modeled via dependent coordinates: a frequency domain treatment based on generalized modal an…
2019
Generalized independent coordinates are typically utilized within an analytical dynamics framework to model the motion of structural and mechanical engineering systems. Nevertheless, for complex systems, such as multi-body structures, an explicit formulation of the equations of motion by utilizing generalized, independent, coordinates can be a daunting task. In this regard, employing a set of redundant coordinates can facilitate the formulation of the governing dynamics equations. In this setting, however, standard response analysis techniques cannot be applied in a straightforward manner. For instance, defining and determining a transfer function within a frequency domain response analysis…
Event-Related Potentials (ERP) Indices of Motivation during the Effort Expenditure for Reward Task
2020
Dynamic and temporal facets of the various constructs that comprise motivation remain to be explored. Here, we adapted the Effort Expenditure for Reward Task, a well-known laboratory task used to evaluate motivation, to study the event-related potentials associated with reward processing. The Stimulus Preceding Negativity (SPN) and the P300 were utilized as motivation indicators with high density electroencephalography. The SPN was found to be more negative for difficult choices compared to easy choices, suggesting a greater level of motivation, at a neurophysiological level. The insula, a structure previously associated with both effort discounting and prediction error, was concomitantly a…
