Exploring the uncertainty in capacity estimation at roundabouts

2017

Abstract Purpose In gap-acceptance theory the critical and the follow-up headways have a significant role in determining roundabout entry capacities which in turn depend on circulating flow rates under a specified arrival headway distribution. Calculation considers single mean values of the gap-acceptance parameters, neglecting the inherent variations in these random variables and providing a single value of entry capacity. The purpose of this paper is to derive the entry capacity distribution which accounts for the variations of the contributing (random) variables and suggest how to consider this issue in the operational analysis of the roundabouts. Methods We performed a Monte Carlo simul…

A simulation tool for analysis and design of reverse electrodialysis using concentrated brines

2015

Abstract Reverse electrodialysis (SGP-RE or RED) represents a viable technology for the conversion of the salinity gradient power into electric power. A comprehensive model is proposed for the RED process using sea or brackish water and concentrated brine as feed solutions. The goals were (i) reliably describing the physical phenomena involved in the process and (ii) providing information for optimal equipment design. For such purposes, the model has been developed at two different scales of description: a lower scale for the repeating unit of the system (cell pair), and a higher scale for the entire equipment (stack). The model was implemented in a process simulator, validated against orig…

Capacity Analysis in Downlink WCDMA Systems Using Soft Handover Techniques With SIR-Based Power Control and Site Selection Diversity Transmission

2006

This work analyzes the downlink performance of a WCDMA system with site selection diversity transmission power control (SSDT) during soft handover mode. Signal to interference ratio (SIR) power control techniques are modeled and used in the simulations of this analysis. The study is focused on finding the optimum soft handover margin in terms of maximum system capacity under energy-per-bit to noise spectral density ratio (Eb/N0) quality requirements. The results of this analysis show an increase in user capacity of about 15 -20 % for optimum soft handover margins of 5 – 5.5 dB. Nevertheless, the resources required (number of scrambling codes) by base station increase faster than the number …

Isolated two-stage passive PFC rectifier for the Radioisotope Stirling Generator

2013

This paper describes an isolated, passive power factor correction rectifier devised for low-voltage, large-inductance, single-phase alternator, like the one used in the Radioisotope Stirling Generator. The power converter splits into two independent stages, the front-end rectifier corrects the power factor by adding a series capacitor in the AC line. Further, the rectifier, thanks to the alternator inductance, behaves as a constant-current source that powers a current-fed, zero voltage and zero current switching push-pull stage. This approach takes advantage of all parasitic elements to increase power density while keeping simple and reliable. Full description and analysis is given as well …

Optimized design of high power density EMI filters for power electronic converters

2016

Nowadays, power density of power converters and related EMI filters is gaining more and more attention. This severely impacts on the design constraints in several application domains. A conventional design of the EMI filter does not guarantee the selection of components/configuration leading to the best power density. For this reason, an optimized design procedure of discrete EMI filters in terms of power density is proposed in this paper. It is based on a previously developed rule-based design procedure, introducing here additional features to obtain a more effective optimization of EMI filter's power density. The proposed approach has been validated in terms of EMI filter's performance an…

Geometry-Based Modeling of Wideband Industrial Indoor Radio Propagation Channels

2015

In this paper, we present a geometrical scattering model for a typical class of industrial indoor environments. The proposed industrial reference model takes into account scattering components arising from metallic structures and the surrounding walls of the investigated environment. Starting from the geometrical scattering model, we derive the analytical expressions of the probability density function (PDF) of the angle of arrival (AoA), PDF of the time of arrival (ToA), and the autocorrelation function (ACF) in the frequency domain. The obtained results reveal a large difference between industrial channels and other home and office environments. The theoretical results of the reference mo…

Generalized feed-forward based method for wind energy prediction

2013

Abstract Even though a number of new mathematical functions have been proposed for modeling wind speed probability density distributions, still the Weibull function continues to be the most commonly used model in the literature. Therefore, the parameters of this function are still widely used to obtain typical wind probability density distributions for finding the wind energy potential by researchers, engineers and designers. Once long-term average of Weibull function’s parameters are known, then the probability density distributions can easily be obtained. Artificial neural network (ANN) can be used as alternative to analytical approach as ANN offers advantages such as no required knowledg…

A RELIABILITY MODEL FOR OPTIMAL ALLOCATION OF SPARE TOOLS IN FMS

1989

ABSTRACT A model for the dynamic management of the tool set of an FMS workstation is developed. The proposed approach processing the on-line recorded tool failure data updates the estimate of the parameters of the probability density functions of tool life and selects, at the occurence of each failure, the code of the tool to be allocated in the workstation storage devices in order to maximize its reliability over a planned horizon.

Modelling the Doppler Power Spectrum of Non-Stationary Underwater Acoustic Channels Based on Doppler Measurements

2017

This paper proposes a non-stationary time-continuous simulation model for wideband shallow underwater acoustic (UWA) channels based on measured Doppler power spectrums (DPSs). Measurement-based channel simulators are essential for the test, optimization, and performance analysis of UWA communication systems. The aim is to fit the DPS of the simulation model to that of the measured UWA channel. The performance of the designed UWA channel simulator is assessed by comparing the average Doppler shift and Doppler spread of the channel simulator with the corresponding quantities of the measured UWA channel. The results of the assessment show a good match between the statistical quantities of the …

A Non-Stationary MIMO Vehicle-to-Vehicle Channel Model Derived from the Geometrical Street Model

2011

In this paper, we derive a non-stationary multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) channel model from the geometrical street model. Single-bounce scattering is assumed for both fixed and moving scatterers. The high mobility of the transmitter, the receiver, and the surrounding vehicles results in time-variant angles-of-departure (AODs) and angles-of-arrival (AOAs). This fact makes the model non-stationary. Starting from the geometrical model, an analytical expression is derived for the channel gain taking into account the impact of fixed and moving scatterers. The statistical properties of the proposed channel model are studied. Analytical solutions are provided for th…
