Amplification of Interstory Drift and Velocity for the Passive Control of Structural Vibrations

2008

Mitigation of structural damage due to earthquake ground motion may be performed by inserting dampers in the structure. In order to enhance the damping effect various toggle brace configurations have been recently proposed. In this paper these equipments are analyzed in detail and compared with a new one here proposed. The analysis is performed by taking into account the inherent nonlinearities of the damper by means of stochastic analysis and validated by using time histories of recorder accelerograms and by the stochastic analysis using spectrum consistent power spectral density.

Immobilized glycolipids from human diploid fibroblasts inhibit DNA synthesis of cultured human fibroblasts*1

1987

Several previous studies have shown that glycolipids isolated from plasma membranes of cultured cells and added to cells in culture inhibit the growth rate in a concentration-dependent fashion. In order to investigate the possible involvement of glycolipids in the growth regulation of normal cells by cell-cell contacts, we tested the effect of immobilized glycolipids, isolated from human fibroblasts, on the DNA synthesis of freshly seeded fibroblasts. Gangliosides inhibited DNA synthesis to a great extent, whereas neutral glycolipids had only a minor effect. The degree of inhibition of DNA synthesis by immobilized gangliosides depended both on the cell density of the cultures from which the…

Isolation and Characterization of Epidermal DNA and RNA from Guinea Pig Skin

1971

DNA and RNA were isolated from mammalian epidermis in a relatively small scale procedure. The high purity and native state of the DNA isolated is reflected by its molar absorptivity E (P), its thermal hyperchromicity and its hyperchromicity upon DNase treatment and by its sedimentation profile as well as by its profile in a cesium chloride density gradient. The very low content of protein and RNA, as well as the data of DNA determination, indicate that this method permits the isolation of a highly purified product. This is further substantiated by the determination of UV absorption spectra and by analysis of the base composition. The mammalian skin DNA showed the following properties: Mol. w…

Gamow-Teller response in the configuration space of a density-functional-theory–rooted no-core configuration-interaction model

2018

Background: The atomic nucleus is a unique laboratory in which to study fundamental aspects of the electroweak interaction. This includes a question concerning in medium renormalization of the axial-vector current, which still lacks satisfactory explanation. Study of spin-isospin or Gamow-Teller (GT) response may provide valuable information on both the quenching of the axial-vector coupling constant as well as on nuclear structure and nuclear astrophysics.Purpose: We have performed a seminal calculation of the GT response by using the no-core configuration-interaction approach rooted in multireference density functional theory (DFT-NCCI). The model treats properly isospin and rotational sy…

Searches for transverse momentum dependent flow vector fluctuations in Pb-Pb and p-Pb collisions at the LHC

2017

The measurement of azimuthal correlations of charged particles is presented for Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=$ 2.76 TeV and p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=$ 5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. These correlations are measured for the second, third and fourth order flow vector in the pseudorapidity region $||<0.8$ as a function of centrality and transverse momentum $p_{\rm T}$ using two observables, to search for evidence of $p_{\rm T}$-dependent flow vector fluctuations. For Pb-Pb collisions at 2.76 TeV, the measurements indicate that $p_{\rm T}$-dependent fluctuations are only present for the second order flow vector. Similar results hav…

Using Landsat TM and field data to produce maps of predicted bird densities in Latvian farmland

2005

Models of farmland bird population densities established from field surveys were applied to classified satellite data for mapping of predicted bird numbers. The field survey system was based upon point counts of birds and descriptions of their habitat within a 200 m radius. The relationship between birds and habitats was analysed by means of multiple regression analysis. The resulting regression models were coded into classified Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM+) data which had similar land cover/use classes as the field observation data. With the use of a circular 200 m radius moving window approach, simulated maps of predicted bird population densities were produced. The results indi…

Fine-tuning halogen bonding properties of diiodine through halogen–halogen charge transfer – extended [Ru(2,2′-bipyridine)(CO)2X2]·I2 systems (X = Cl…

2016

The current paper introduces the use of carbonyl containing ruthenium complexes, [Ru(bpy)(CO)2X2] (X = Cl, Br, I), as halogen bond acceptors for a I2 halogen bond donor. In all structures, the metal coordinated halogenido ligand acts as the actual halogen bond acceptor. Diiodine, I2, molecules are connected to the metal complexes through both ends of the molecule forming bridges between the complexes. Due to the charge transfer from Ru–X to I2, formation of the first Ru–X⋯I2 contact tends to generate a negative charge on I2 and redistribute the electron density anisotropically. If the initial Ru–X⋯IA–IB interaction causes a notable change in the electron density of I2, the increased negativ…

Halogen bonds with coordinative nature: halogen bonding in a S–I+–S iodonium complex†

2015

A detailed study of unexpectedly strong iodonium–sulfur halogen bonds in [I(2-imidazolidinethione)2]+ is presented. The interactions are characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, charge density analysis based on QTAIM calculations, mass spectrometry, and NMR spectroscopy. The results, small RIS = 0.7 and high interaction energy of −60 kJ mol−1, support a coordinative nature of the halogen bond between the iodonium ion and the sp2 hybridized sulfur atoms.

Struttura di popolazione di Haliotis tuberculata in aree soggette a diversi livelli di protezione

2006

This study aims at evaluating the current status of H. tuberculata stocks in exploited areas of western Sicily. The density of the green ormer was slightly greater in unexploited areas although differences between harvested and not harvested areas was not statistically significant. Moreover, analyses showed that length frequencies varied between harvested and not harvested areas.
