A Wiener Path Integral Technique for Non-Stationary Response Determination of Nonlinear Oscillators with Fractional Derivative Elements

2014

In this paper a novel approximate analytical technique for determining the non-stationary response probability density function (PDF) of randomly excited linear and nonlinear oscillators with fractional derivative elements is developed. Specifically, the concept of the Wiener path integral in conjunction with a variational formulation is utilized to derive an approximate closed form solution for the system response non-stationary PDF. Notably, the determination of the non-stationary response PDF is accomplished without the need to advance the solution in short time steps as it is required by the existing alternative numerical path integral solution schemes. In this manner, the analytical Wi…

Concerted halogen and hydrogen bonding in [RuI2(H2dcbpy)(CO)2]···I2···(CH3OH)···I2···[RuI2(H2dcbpy)(CO)2].

2011

A new type of concerted halogen bond-hydrogen bond interaction was found in the solid state structure of [RuI(2)(H(2)dcbpy)(CO)(2)]···I(2)···(MeOH)···I(2)···[RuI(2)(H(2)dcbpy)(CO)(2)]. The iodine atoms of the two I(2) molecules interact simultaneously with each other and with the OH group of methanol of crystallization. The interaction was characterized by single crystal X-ray measurements and by computational charge density analysis based on DFT calculations.

Molecular dynamics simulations of elementary chemical processes in liquid water using combined density functional and molecular mechanics potentials.…

1997

The first molecular dynamics (MD) simulation of a chemical process in solution with an ab initio description of the reactant species and a classical representation of the solvent is presented. We study the dynamics of proton (deuterium) transfer in strongly hydrogen-bonded systems characterized by an energy surface presenting a double well separated by a low activation barrier. We have chosen the hydroxyl-water complex in liquid water to analyze the coupling between the reactive system and the environment. The proton is transferred from one well to the other with a frequency close to 1 ps−1 which is comparable to the low-frequency band associated to hindered translations, diffusional transl…

Atomic and electronic structure of hydrogen on ZnO (11̄00) surface: ab initio hybrid calculations

2013

Hydrogen atoms unavoidably incorporated into ZnO during growth of bulk samples and thin films considerably affect their electrical conductivity. The results of first principles hybrid LCAO calculations are discussed for hydrogen atoms in the bulk and on the non-polar ZnO (100) surface. The incorporation energy, the atomic relaxation, the electronic density redistribution and the electronic structure modifications are compared for the surface adsorption and bulk interstitial H positions. It is shown that hydrogen has a strong binding with the surface O ions (2.7 eV) whereas its incorporation into bulk is energetically unfavorable. Surface hydrogen atoms are very shallow donors, thus, contrib…

Hydrogen induced metallization of ZnO (11̅00) surface: Ab initio study

2014

Abstract Results of first principles hybrid calculations are presented for hydrogen atoms adsorbed upon non-polar ZnO (1100) surface. The energy of surface atomic relaxation, H adsorption energy, electronic density redistribution and modification of the electronic structure are discussed. It is shown that hydrogen is adsorbed mainly on the surface oxygen ions and forms a strong bonding with them (2.7 eV). Adsorption of hydrogen on the surface zinc ions is energetically unfavorable (− 4.4 eV). It also shown that surface hydrogen atoms are very shallow donors, thus, contributing to the electronic conductivity, and ZnO metallization.

Annual runoff regional frequency analysis in Sicily

2009

Abstract This paper performs annual runoff frequency analysis in Sicily, Italy using the index runoff method. Homogeneous regions, not necessarily defined by geographical boundaries but sharing common features from a morphologic and climatic standpoint, have been identified. For each region a single probability distribution function can be fitted to the available annual runoff data scaled by the index runoff. Starting from an initial dataset of 105 hydrometric stations, 57 stations have been selected using heuristic criteria associated with the Hosking and Wallis’s discordancy measure. The Mantel tests have been then applied to find out the physical and morphological parameters best correla…

Gully erosion is considered to be one of the main causes of land degradation in arid and semi-arid territories around the world. In this research, gully erosion susceptibility mapping was carried out in Semnan province (Iran) as a case study in which we tested the efficiency of the index of entropy (IoE), the Vlse Kriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje (VIKOR) method, and their combination. Remote sensing and geographic information system (GIS) were used to reduce the time and costs needed for rapid assessment of gully erosion. Firstly, a gully erosion inventory map (GEIM) with 206 gully locations was obtained from various sources and randomly divided into two groups: A training d…

Evaluation of Green Roof Ageing Effects on Substrate Hydraulic Characteristics

2020

The vegetated substrate of green roofs may undergo various chemical and physical changes with time. Minidisk infiltrometer (MDI) tests were conducted to assess the short-term variations of the near-saturated hydraulic conductivity, K0, in the extensive green roof test plot established at the University of Palermo. Sampling was repeated four times: before planting (Age 0) and then after four months (Age 1), seven months (Age 2) and ten months (Age 3). A total of 144 infiltration tests were conducted at two pressure heads, h0 = −3 cm and h0 = −0.5 cm and infiltration data analysed by the Zhang (Soil Science Society of America Journal 61(4):1024–1030, 1997) model. Both K-3 and K-0.5 underwent …

Using a transient infiltrometric technique for intensively sampling field-saturated hydraulic conductivity of a clay soil in two runoff plots

2012

The point measurement of soil properties allows to explain and simulate plot scale hydrological processes. An intensive sampling was carried out at the surface of an unsaturated clay soil to measure, on two adjacent plots of 4 × 11 m2 and two different dates (May 2007 and February–March 2008), dry soil bulk density, ρb, and antecedent soil water content, θi, at 88 points. Field-saturated soil hydraulic conductivity, Kfs, was also measured at 176 points by the transient Simplified Falling Head technique to determine the soil water permeability characteristics at the beginning of a possible rainfall event yielding measurable runoff. The ρb values did not differ significantly between the two d…

Testing a distributed approach for modelling sediment delivery

1998

Abstract Both the theoretical basis of a distributed approach to sediment delivery and its agreement with basin sediment yield measurements are tested. At first, by using morphological data of five Apulian and four Calabrian basins, the applicability of a theoretically-based relationship for evaluating the sediment delivery ratio of each morphological unit SDR h, into which a basin is divided, is verified. Using the morphological data of the nine investigated basins, the sediment delivery relationship, i.e. the relationship of the basin sediment delivery ratio SDR Wand SDR h, is tested. The analysis showed that the relationships, proposed by Ferro (1997), establishing the dependence of the …
