Appendix – Additional Measurements

2016

This appendix deals with the determination of different soil physical and hydraulic characteristics used in the analysis and/or interpretation of the infiltration experiments. The core method and the excavation method for measurement of soil bulk density are initially presented. Determination of soil water content by the thermo-gravimetric and the Time Domain Reflectometry methods is then illustrated. Subsequently, field measurement of soil water matric potential by tensiometers is discussed. Laboratory determination of the soil water retention curve by tensiometric and pressiometric techniques is also described. Finally, different methods to test water stability of soil aggregates are illu…

Harrison-Zel'dovich primordial spectrum is consistent with observations

2010

Inflation predicts primordial scalar perturbations with a nearly scale-invariant spectrum and a spectral index approximately unity (the Harrison--Zel'dovich (HZ) spectrum). The first important step for inflationary cosmology is to check the consistency of the HZ primordial spectrum with current observations. Recent analyses have claimed that a HZ primordial spectrum is excluded at more than 99% c.l.. Here we show that the HZ spectrum is only marginally disfavored if one considers a more general reionization scenario. Data from the Planck mission will settle the issue.

Impact of general reionization scenarios on extraction of inflationary parameters

2010

Determination of whether the Harrison-Zel'dovich spectrum for primordial scalar perturbations is consistent with observations is sensitive to assumptions about the reionization scenario. In light of this result, we revisit constraints on inflationary models using more general reionization scenarios. While the bounds on the tensor-to-scalar ratio are largely unmodified, when different reionization schemes are addressed, hybrid models are back into the inflationary game. In the general reionization picture, we reconstruct both the shape and amplitude of the inflaton potential. We discuss how relaxing the simple reionization restriction affects the reconstruction of the potential through the c…

Primordial power spectrum features in phenomenological descriptions of inflation

2016

We extend an alternative, phenomenological approach to inflation by means of an equation of state and a sound speed, both of them functions of the number of $e$-folds and four phenomenological parameters. This approach captures a number of possible inflationary models, including those with non-canonical kinetic terms or scale-dependent non-gaussianities. We perform Markov Chain Monte Carlo analyses using the latest cosmological publicly available measurements, which include Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) data from the Planck satellite. Within this parametrization, we discard scale invariance with a significance of about $10\sigma$, and the running of the spectral index is constrained as …

Probabilistic quantum clustering

2020

Abstract Quantum Clustering is a powerful method to detect clusters with complex shapes. However, it is very sensitive to a length parameter that controls the shape of the Gaussian kernel associated with a wave function, which is employed in the Schrodinger equation with the role of a density estimator. In addition, linking data points into clusters requires local estimates of covariance which requires further parameters. This paper proposes a Bayesian framework that provides an objective measure of goodness-of-fit to the data, to optimise the adjustable parameters. This also quantifies the probabilities of cluster membership, thus partitioning the data into a specific number of clusters, w…

Multicolor Up-Conversion Luminescence in Rare-Earth Doped NaLaF4

2011

In this work we tried to achieve multicolor up-conversion luminescence in low phonon energy material NaLaF4 doped with different Er3+ Tm3+ and Yb3+ concentrations. Up-conversion luminescence was measured and main luminescence bands from Er3+ and Tm3+ in red, green and blue spectral regions were observed. The relative intensities of the luminescence bands could be changed by changing the doping levels of rare-earth ions. Changes in the up-conversion luminescence color could be achieved by applying different infrared pump power density. The color coordinates of the multicolor up-conversion luminescence depending on doping level as well as on the pump power density were presented in CIE (x, y)…

Rotational analysis of the v 2 + v 6 ±1, v 5 ∓1 + v 6 ∓1 and v 5 ∓1 + v 6 ±1 interacting infrared bands of methyl bromide

1982

The rotational analysis of the infrared absorption spectrum of CH3 79Br and CH3 81Br between 2150 and 2510 cm-1 was performed on a Fourier transform spectrum with a resolution of 0·007 cm-1. The bands v 2 + v 6(E) and v 5 + v 6(A 1 + A 2 + E) occur in this region, giving rise to several perturbations as in the corresponding system of methyl chloride [3]. Forbidden transitions, observed in correspondence of the level crossing of the x-y Coriolis coupling between v 2 + v 6 and v 5 + v 6(E), enabled us to estimate the value of A″ - 225D″K at 5·16186 cm-1 for CH3 79Br and 5·16173 cm-1 for CH3 81Br. The parallel system of v 5 + v 6 exhibits a perpendicular structure, and an l-type resonance coup…

Constraining the thin disc initial mass function using Galactic classical Cepheids

2016

Context: The Initial Mass Function (IMF) plays a crucial role on galaxy evolution and its implications on star formation theory make it a milestone for the next decade. It is in the intermediate and high mass ranges where the uncertainties of the IMF are larger. This is a major subject of debate and analysis both for Galactic and extragalactic science. Aims: Our goal is to constrain the IMF of the Galactic thin disc population using both Galactic Classical Cepheids and Tycho-2 data. Methods: For the first time the Besan\c{c}on Galaxy Model (BGM) has been used to characterise the Galactic population of the Classical Cepheids. We have modified the age configuration in the youngest populations…
