A simple system of two particles in a bidimensional configurational space S is studied. The possibility of breaking in S the time-independent Schrodinger equation of the system into two separated one-dimensional one-body Schrodinger equations is assumed. In this paper, we focus on how the latter property is countered by imposing such boundary conditions as confinement to a limited region of S and/or restrictions on the joint coordinate probability density stemming from the sign-invariance condition of the relative coordinate (an impenetrability condition). Nonequilibrium Green's function approach to strongly correlated few-electron quantum dots

The effect of electron-electron scattering on the equilibrium properties of few-electron quantum dots is investigated by means of nonequilibrium Green's function theory. The ground and equilibrium states are self-consistently computed from the Matsubara (imaginary time) Green's function for the spatially inhomogeneous quantum dot system whose constituent charge carriers are treated as spin-polarized. To include correlations, the Dyson equation is solved, starting from a Hartree-Fock reference state, within a conserving (second-order) self-energy approximation where direct and exchange contributions to the electron-electron interaction are included on the same footing. Efficient charge extraction within solar cells explicitly depends on the optimization of the internal interfaces. Potential barriers, unbalanced charge extraction, and interfacial trap states can prevent cells from reaching high power conversion efficiencies. Studies of host-guest thin films of corona-poled betaine-type polar molecules by kelvin probe technique and atomic force microscopy

In this work betaine-type molecules were investigated. As a result of the asymmetry of charge distribution, molecules possess in the ground state a considerable permanent dipole moment. The decay of surface potential of poled polymer films is dependent at least on two relaxation processes. The influence of glass transition of PMMA on thermal dependence of the surface potential is shown. The transition temperature, where no changes of the surface potential appeared, is related to glass transition temperature of the host-guest system. The topography of the film surface was obtained by AFM.

Learning with the kernel signal to noise ratio

This paper presents the application of the kernel signal to noise ratio (KSNR) in the context of feature extraction to general machine learning and signal processing domains. The proposed approach maximizes the signal variance while minimizes the estimated noise variance in a reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS). The KSNR can be used in any kernel method to deal with correlated (possibly non-Gaussian) noise. We illustrate the method in nonlinear regression examples, dependence estimation and causal inference, nonlinear channel equalization, and nonlinear feature extraction from high-dimensional satellite images. Stereospondyli are a clade of large aquatic temnospondyls known to have evolved a large dermal pectoral girdle. Among the Stereospondyli, metoposaurids in particular possess large interclavicles and clavicles relative to the rest of the postcranial skel-eton. Because of the large size of these dermal bones, it was first proposed that they served as ballast during hydrostatic buoyancy control which assisted metoposaurids to live a bottom-dwelling mode of life. This experimental study investigates the swelling behaviour of an 80/20 sand/bentonite mixture and the associated fabric evolution under different hydro-chemo-mechanical loadings. Free and confined swelling tests are performed on specimens compacted to different dry densities and wetted with different pore fluids. The study investigates the determinants of unionization in a country — Finland — where union density, defined as the number of unionized members divided by the labour force, has risen 60 percentage points in 32 years, from 22 percent in 1960 to 82 percent in 1992. The theoretical framework of the study is based on the background information obtained from surveys inquiring why individuals join a union. The empirical analysis for the period 1962–92 shows that the model is capable of explaining long-run trends in union density in a very satisfactory manner. Limiting transport properties of lanthanide and actinide ions in pure water

Summary The limiting transport properties, i.e. the limiting ionic conductivity (λ°) and the limiting diffusion coefficient (D°), of lanthanide and actinide ions at 298.15K have been calculated by means of the microscopic version of the Stokes–Einstein law involving (i) the effective charge and the ionic radius of the ions and (ii) the ion micro-viscosity, i.e. the viscosity of the hydrated water molecules in the vicinity of the ion. The latter quantity was derived from the variation of the dynamic properties of the water molecules in the first hydration shell with the surface charge density of common mono-atomic cations of various charges.
