Dentist's attitude and criteria in the diagnosis and treatment of caries lesions : survey about a clinical case
2022
Background The diagnosis of caries, the stage of the disease and the indication of treatment are among the most controversial issues in dentistry. Studies comparing the diagnosis and treatment indication of different professionals show the lack of a unifying criterion in the diagnosis and treatment plan of the disease. The Objectives of this research is to evaluate the attitude of a group of odontostomatologists to a clinical case with lesions compatible with caries, evaluating whether their criteria and attitude in diagnosis and treatment depend on their academic level, years of professional practice, the application of minimal intervention dentistry criteria and the usual practice in cons…
Fragile X-syndrome: literature review and report of two cases
2009
Fragile X-syndrome is caused by a mutation in chromosome X. It is one of the most frequent causes of learning disability. The most frequent manifestations of fragile X-syndrome are learning disability, different orofacial morphological alterations and an increase in testicle size. The disease is associated with cardiac malformations, joint hyperextension and behavioural alterations. We present two male patients aged 17 and 10 years, treated in our Service due to severe gingivitis. Both showed the typical facial and dental characteristics of the syndrome. In addition, we detected the presence of root anomalies such as taurodontism and root bifurcation, which had not been associated with frag…
Lack of association between celiac disease and dental enamel hypoplasia in a case-control study from an Italian central region
2007
Abstract Background A close correlation between celiac disease (CD) and oral lesions has been reported. The aim of this case-control study was to assess prevalence of enamel hypoplasia, recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS), dermatitis herpetiformis and atrophic glossitis in an Italian cohort of patients with CD. Methods Fifty patients with CD and fifty healthy subjects (age range: 3–25 years), matched for age, gender and geographical area, were evaluated by a single trained examiner. Diagnosis of oral diseases was based on typical medical history and clinical features. Histopathological analysis was performed when needed. Adequate univariate statistical analysis was performed. Results Enamel…
Effects of minute misregistrations of prefabricated markers for image-guided dental implant surgery: an analytical evaluation
2012
Objectives The goal of the present study was to develop a theoretical analysis of errors in implant position, which can occur owing to minute registration errors of a reference marker in a cone beam computed tomography volume when inserting an implant with a surgical stent. Material and methods A virtual dental-arch model was created using anatomic data derived from the literature. Basic trigonometry was used to compute effects of defined minute registration errors of only voxel size. The errors occurring at the implant's neck and apex both in horizontal as in vertical direction were computed for mean ±95%-confidence intervals of jaw width and length and typical implant lengths (8, 10 and 1…
Implant overdentures: recommendations and analysis of the clinical benefits.
2011
Due to the progress made in implantology, in recent years the interest in prosthetic rehabilitation in edentulous mouths using overdentures has increased considerably. Indications to the treatment of implant supported overdenture could be classified in three groups: the first group consists of younger members of the elderly population who have an edentulous upper jaw rehabilitated with a conventional complete denture but experience discomfort with it and therefore desire a stable prosthesis and greater comfort in the mouth; the second group, for which the use of implant overdentures is recommended, consists of older patients who require greater stability from a complete mandibular denture; …
Length of endodontic files measured in digital radiographs with and without noise-suppression filters: an ex-vivo study
2011
The aim of this study is to evaluate if theoretically possible edge shifts induced by noise-suppression filters potentially occur on objects found in digital radiographs. Most manufacturers carry out noise-suppression filtering of their images before they are displayed to the user. It is not usually possible for the user to disrupt the function of the filters. The use of these filters can lead to deletion of small image structures.K-files (ISO size 06, 08, 10 and 15) were placed in the root canals of 6 human teeth located in cadaver jaw segments. File tip positions were measured on original and filtered digital images by three observers. The file position was marked on each filtered image a…
Condylar position indicator and T-scan system II in clinical evaluation of temporomandibular intracapsular disease.
2012
The pathogenesis of temporomandibular joint intracapsular disease (TMJI) is multifactorial and its diagnosis is not easy. In this work authors show two types of clinical analysis: the Condylar Position Indicator (CPI) and T-Scan 2 system.Twenty patients (mean age of 24.5 years) with TMJI problem and 10 healthy matched subjects (mean age: 25.4 years) were selected. Analysis of TMJI was performed on each patient by means of Condylar Position Indicator (CPI) and T-Scan System II tests.Eight patients presented vertical symmetrical condylar distraction greater than healthy subjects (P-value0.001). T-Scan showed a difference of Percentage of Force (POF) not greater than 5%. Seven patients showed …
Immediate dental implants placed into infected sites present a higher risk of failure than immediate dental implants placed into non-infected sites: …
2019
Background Alveolar infection is known as a risk factor for implant failure. Current meta-analysis on the theme could not prove statistically that immediate dental implants placed into infected sites have a higher risk of failure than immediate dental implants placed into non-infected sites. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to determine the effectiveness of immediate dental implants placed into infected versus non-infected sites. Material and Methods Seven databases were sought by two reviewers. Randomized or non-randomized clinical trials that compared the placement of dental implants into infected versus non-infected sites were eligible for the study. Exclusion criteria were: papers …
Survival rates of a lithium disilicate-based core ceramic for three-unit esthetic fixed partial dentures: a 10-year prospective study.
2013
Purpose The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy and long-term survival rate of three-unit fixed partial dentures (FPDs) made from lithium disilicate-based core ceramic. Materials and methods Twenty-one three-unit FPDs were placed in 19 patients to replace single lost teeth in the esthetic area, following a study protocol that took clinical, esthetic, and radiologic aspects into consideration. Each case was reviewed at 1 week following placement, at 6 months, and then annually for 10 years. Statistical analysis was performed using Kaplan-Meier survival analysis. Results Out of the 19 patients, 14.3% presented reversible postoperative sensitivity. Recession was…
