Bone regeneration in diabetic patients. A systematic review
2019
Background Oral bone regeneration techniques (OBRT) attempt to provide the appropriate bone volume and density to correctly accomplish dental implant treatments. The objective was to determine whether differences exist in the clinical outcomes of these techniques between diabetic and non-diabetic patients, considering the level of scientific evidence. Material and Methods A systematic review following PRISMA statements was conducted in the PubMed, Scopus and Cochrane databases with the search terms: “Diabetes Mellitus”, “guided bone regeneration”, “bone regeneration”, “alveolar ridge augmentation”, “ridge augmentation”, bone graft*, “sinus floor augmentation”, “sinus floor elevation”, “sinu…
A influência de fatores psicossociais protetores sobre a incidência de dor dentária
2022
ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE To investigate the influence of protective psychosocial factors on the incidence of dental pain in the last six months among 12-year-old children living in Manaus (AM). METHODS A prospective school-based cohort study was conducted with 210 12-year-old students enrolled in public schools in the eastern zone of Manaus (AM). Students were followed up for two years. Validated questionnaires were used to assess sociodemographic characteristics, protective psychosocial factors, including sense of coherence, social support, and self-esteem at baseline and after two years. Calibrated examiners clinically assessed dental caries and gingival bleeding. Multivariate multilevel Poisso…
Effectiveness of a new method of disinfecting the root canal, using Er, Cr:YSGG laser to kill Enterococcus faecalis in an infected tooth model.
2013
Some lasers have demonstrated to provide effective disinfection when used as adjunctive device to the conventional treatment. The aim of this in vitro study was to determine the effectiveness of the erbium, chromium:yttrium scandium gallium garnet (Er, Cr:YSGG) laser by measuring its bactericidal effect inside the root canal experimentally colonized with Enterococcus faecalis. The laser was tested at different irradiation times (30 and 60 s) and energy of impulses (75 and 25 mJ). A total of 52 single-rooted extracted human teeth were endodontically prepared with rotary instrumentation. All were sterilized and inoculated with a suspension of E. faecalis (105 bacteria/ml). The teeth were rand…
Efficacy of removing Thermafil and GuttaCore from straight root canal systems using a novel non-surgical root canal re-treatment system : a micro-com…
2021
The present study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of an XP-endo non-surgical root canal re-treatment system in removing both GuttaCore and Thermafil gutta-percha carrier-based root canal filling materials from straight root canal systems using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) analysis. The study was performed on 20 single-rooted upper teeth, which were randomly allocated into the following study groups: Group A, Thermafil and AH Plus sealer (n = 10)
Facial scanning accuracy depending on the alignment algorithm and digitized surface area location: An in vitro study.
2021
To measure the accuracy (trueness and precision) of a facial scanner depending on the alignment method and the digitized surface area location.Fourteen markers were adhered on a head mannequin and digitized using an industrial scanner (GOM Atos Q 3D 12 M; Carl Zeiss Industrielle Messtechnik GmbH). A control mesh was acquired. Subsequently, the mannequin was digitized using a facial scanner (Arc4; Bellus3D) (n = 30). The control mesh was delineated into 10 areas. Based on the alignment procedures, two groups were created: reference best fit (RBF group) and landmark-based best fit (LA group). The root mean square was used to calculate the discrepancy between the control mesh and each facial s…
Short implants (8mm) versus longer implants (≥8mm) with lateral sinus floor augmentation in posterior atrophic maxilla: A meta-analysis of RCT`s in h…
2019
Background One of the greatest challenges that dentists face today is to rehabilitate severe atrophied alveolar ridges in partially and completely edentulous patients with implants. Despite the high survival rate of implants placed next to sinus elevation, this technique presents complications that can be avoided by placing short implants, an option that also presents high survival rates. For this reason, the aim of this study is to compare the survival rate, marginal bone loss and complications associated with short implants (<8 mm) versus longer implants (≥8mm) placed with lateral sinus floor elevation in posterior atrophic maxillae. Material and Methods A literature search was conducted …
Curricula for the teaching of complete dentures in Spanish and Portuguese dental schools
2012
Objectives: Given the need to ensure that dentists are sufficiently skilled to offer the best possible care to their patients, this study aims to evaluate the teaching methods and clinical experience achieved by undergraduate dental students in Spain and Portugal as regards complete dentures. Study design: In February 2011, a questionnaire seeking information about the preclinical and clinical teaching of complete dentures was e-mailed to all Spanish and Portuguese dental schools with fully developed undergraduate degree dental programs. Results: A response rate of 82.6% was obtained. The distribution of lectures and hours spent at the laboratory and in clinical activities revealed that tea…
Quantitative analysis of the obturation of oval-shaped canals using thermoplastic techniques
2023
The main aim of this study is to quantify the area filled by gutta-percha, the area filled by cement and the area of voids present in oval canals, treated by thermoplastic filling techniques in comparison with the lateral condensation technique and observe the adaptation of the gutta-percha to the anatomy of the oval root canals according to the obturation technique. 80 mandibular incisors were selected. The teeth were instrumented with Protaper Gold and divided into 4 groups of 20. Group 1 was filled with Thermafill; group 2 with GuttaCore; group 3 with continuous wave vertical condensation and group 4 with the lateral condensation technique. Two horizontal sections were cut at 5mm and 7m…
Efficacy of stem cells in bone rehabilitation in patients with alveolar bone atrophy: a systematic review
2023
Background: Biomedical engineering proposes the use of stem cells as a bone rehabilitation treatment in patients with alveolar bone defects. Many authors suggest that this innovative technique could represent the future of bone regeneration in dentistry. The present study systematically reviewed the efficacy of stem cells in bone regeneration in patients with alveolar bone atrophy. Material and methods: The study was developed following the criteria of the PRISMA guideline (2020). The literature review was conducted in Pubmed, Medline Complete, and Scopus. The search algorithms used the following key words: stem cells, bone regeneration, and alveolar ridge augmentation. To assess the risk o…
Psychometric validation of the Spanish version of the Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure applied to dental students.
2013
Aim: To carry out a psychometric evaluation of the Spanish-language version of the Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure (DREEM) applied to dental students. Methods: A total of 1,391 students from nine Spanish public schools of dentistry responded to the DREEM questionnaire. To analyse the reliability of the DREEM questionnaire, the internal consistency was assessed and a 'test-retest' carried out. Validity was evaluated through analysis of item response rate, floor and ceiling effects, corrected item-total and item-subscale correlations and factor structure. A confirmatory factor analysis was performed to analyse the structure of the original DREEM scale. Results: Cronbach's alpha coe…
