Determination of periodontopathogens in patients with cri du chat syndrome

2013

Objectives: Cri du chat syndrome is a genetic alteration associated with some oral pathologies. However, it has not been described previously any clinical relationship between the periodontal disease and the syndrome. The purpose of this comparative study was to compare periodontopathogenic flora in a group with Cri du chat syndrome and another without the síndrome, to assess a potential microbiological predisposition to suffer a periodontitis. Study Design: The study compared nineteen subjects with Cri du chat Syndrome with a control group of nineteen patients without it. All patients were clinically evaluated by periodontal probing, valuing the pocket depth, the clinical attachmente level…

Bacteria associated with periodontal disease are also increased in health.

2020

Background The objective of this cross-sectional clinical study was to analyze the differences in the microbiome in gingival sulci of adult patients in the presence or absence of chronic periodontitis. Material and Methods Patients with or without periodontal disease were included in this cross-sectional study. Subgingival biofilm samples were collected and analyzed by 16S massive pyrosequencing. Functional analyses were also performed. Results A total of 15 phyla, 154 genera and 351 species were detected globally. Differences between disease and non-disease samples were observed in all taxonomical levels which suggest functional profile changes in the community. It was found that the main …

Immunohistochemical expression of p21 in normal tissues of salivary gland, pleomorphic adenoma and carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma (undifferentiated…

2009

Objective: Our study aimed to characterize alteration in the immunohistochemical expression of p21 in normal tissue of the salivary gland surrounding pleomorphic adenoma, the tumor cells of pleomorphic adenomas, and carcinoma arising in pleomorphic adenoma. Study design: A selected series of 29 cases of pleomorphic adenomas, and 27 cases of carcinoma ex-pleomorphic adenoma (undifferentiated and adenocarcinoma types) were examined. Results: The results showed that p21 expression was negative in the most components of normal tissue of the salivary gland surrounding pleomorphic adenoma, 24 cases out of 29 of the non tumour duct cells (82.8%), and 28 (96.6%) cases out of 29 of the acinar cells …

Maxillary sinus lift performed using ultrasound. Evaluation of 21 patients.

2008

Purpose: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the sinus membrane perforations that occurred during a sinus lift procedure using the ultrasound technique, and to evaluate the bone gain obtained. Materials and methods: In 21 patients, 26 sinus lifts were performed using ultrasound and filled with bone graft material. The bone height and the bone gain obtained were observed in postoperative orthopantomographs, correcting for previous distortion. Results: Of the 26 maxillary sinus lifts, 4 Schneiderian membrane perforations were observed. The average bone height prior to the intervention was 3.5 mm (scale 0.6- 8.7 mm ) and the average postsurgical bone height was 10.8 mm (scale 7.5- 15.…

Electromyographic study of activity of the masseter and anterior temporalis muscles in patients with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfuction : compa…

2010

Objectives: A comparison was made between the electromyographic patterns specific to patient with temporomandibular disorders and that of normal healthy patients. Study design: Electromyographic tests were carried out during rest and function of the masseter muscles and anterior temporalis muscles in a homogeneous group consisting of 95 patients for whom such pathology and its different degree of severity had been previously studied by means of a Helkimo Test. The electromyographic exploration results were compared to those of a control group consisting of 31 healthy subjects. Results: There were significant differences among patients with a different degree of clinical dysfunction, as well…

Effect of undersized drilling on the stability of immediate tapered implants in the anterior maxillary sector. A randomized clinical trial.

2020

Background To evaluate the effect of undersized drilling on the primary and secondary stability of immediate implants placed in the anterior maxilla. Material and Methods A comparative randomized clinical trial was carried out in 30 healthy adults. Thirty tapered implants, 16 involving conventional drilling and 14 undersized drilling, were placed immediately after anterior maxillary tooth removal. Insertion torque and implant stability assessed by resonance frequency analysis (RFA) were evaluated at three different timepoints: at implant placement and 6 and 12 weeks post-implantation. The results were compared using parametric statistical tests. Results All implants showed adequate stabilit…

Dental profile of a community of recovering drug addicts: Biomedical aspects. Retrospective cohort study

2013

Objectives: to obtain a biomedical oral profile of a community of adult drug addicts in treatment by analysing their dental health, with a view to determining whether the state of their oral health could be attributed primarily to their lifestyle and the direct consequences of drug abuse on their overall condition, rather than to the effects of the drugs used. Experimental Design: the study was conducted under the terms of an agreement between the Complutense University of Madrid's (UCM) Odontology Faculty and the City of Madrid's Substance Abuse Institute. Seventy drug addicts and 34 control group subjects were examined. The study assessed oral hygiene habits, systemic pathology, type of d…

Awareness on oral cancer among patients attending dental school clinics in Brazil

2019

Background Oral cancer is considered a public health problem worldwide. Dental schools may play an important role in educating patients about oral cancer. This study aimed at evaluating the knowledge of patients attending clinics at two dental schools in Brazil. Material and Methods From March 2017 to April 2017, 251 patients who were attending clinics at two dental schools in Recife, Brazil, were included in the study. Patients were contacted in the waiting rooms of the clinic. Each participant completed a self-administered questionnaire, which consists of 21 questions, including socio-demographic and specific information on the disease. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and…

Tooth avulsion accidents due to urgent and emergency orotracheal intubation

2020

Background Intubation is necessary during critical situations to reduce the risk of death. In Brazil, a need exists to determine the prevalence of tooth avulsions in emergency and urgent care. The objective of this study was to identify the causes of orotracheal intubation (OTI), the number of tooth avulsions, and the avulsed teeth that result from urgent and emergency intubation. Material and Methods The sample consisted of 116 patients (total group) in intensive care units (ICUs) distributed across Group 1 (G1), which was composed of 71 patients from an urgent-care hospital, and Group 2 (G2), which was composed of 45 patients from an emergency hospital. Clinical examinations showed dental…

Cultural and communicational traits of oral health care: results of a Finnish case study.

2006

This paper aims to describe the cultural and communicational traits of Finnish oral health care. First, employees' views and experiences regarding their organization and their position within it are investigated and, second, relations between different individual and organizational factors are analyzed. Finally, a conceptual framework of organizational coherence is constructed. The paper shows that data collection (n = 58, 84 percent response rate) was carried out in 2002 at a Finnish dental clinic by using a semi-structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed statistically by using, among other things, non-parametric tests and a structural equation model (LISREL) and qualitatively by usin…
