Sex-specific signatures of intrinsic hippocampal networks and regional integrity underlying cognitive status in multiple sclerosis

2021

Abstract The hippocampus is an anatomically compartmentalized structure embedded in highly wired networks that are essential for cognitive functions. The hippocampal vulnerability has been postulated in acute and chronic neuroinflammation in multiple sclerosis, while the patterns of occurring inflammation, neurodegeneration or compensation have not yet been described. Besides focal damage to hippocampal tissue, network disruption is an important contributor to cognitive decline in multiple sclerosis patients. We postulate sex-specific trajectories in hippocampal network reorganization and regional integrity and address their relationship to markers of neuroinflammation, cognitive/memory per…

Disability in Older People and Socio-Economic Deprivation in Italy: Effects on the Care Burden and System Resources

2021

The sustainability of European Long-Term Care systems faces the demographic and socio-economic circumstances, mainly the increasing ageing of the population, with its chronic disease conditions, and the simultaneous economic general crises, exacerbated by the recent COVID-19 pandemic. Beyond the increase in general rate of relative poverty, there is a higher risk of poverty among elderly and families in a high demand of care, especially if situations of Activities Daily Living (ADL) disability are present. Italian welfare, which is based on family care regimes and regional strategies, and is oriented to private or public care, is a relevant case study with which to analyze such a relationsh…

Intensivsykepleierens vurdering og tilrettelegging av søvn : en kvalitativ studie om intensivsykepleierens erfaring med vurdering og tilrettelegging …

2016

Masteroppgave i spesialsykepleie – Universitetet i Agder 2016 Background: Previous studies have showed that lack of sleep makes ICU patients stressed. In addition, other studies have showed that the ICU nurses’ subjective assessment of ICU patients’ sleep have low correspondence with objective data, like polysomnography. This shows the need for further studies related to the assessment and facilitation of sleep that the ICU nurses are doing. Aim: The aim of this study is to investigate the ICU nurse’s experience of assessment and facilitation of the ICU patient’s sleep, and how sleep can affect the course of the disease. Method: The study has a qualitative approach and in-depth interviews w…

The price of safety: food deprivation in early life influences the efficacy of chemical defence in an aposematic moth

2018

Aposematism is the combination of a primary signal with a secondary defence that predators must learn to associate with one another. However, variation in the level of defence, both within and between species, is very common. As secondary defences influence individual fitness, this variation in quality and quantity requires an evolutionary explanation, particularly as it may or may not correlate with variation in primary signals. The costs of defence production are expected to play a considerable role in generating this variation, yet studies of the cost of chemical defence have focused on species that sequester their defences, while studies in species that produce them de novo are scarce. …
