Synergies between Hyperpolarized NMR and Microfluidics: A Review
2021
Hyperpolarized nuclear magnetic resonance and lab-on-a-chip microfluidics are two dynamic, but until recently quite distinct, fields of research. Recent developments in both areas increased their synergistic overlap. By microfluidic integration, many complex experimental steps can be brought together onto a single platform. Microfluidic devices are therefore increasingly finding applications in medical diagnostics, forensic analysis, and biomedical research. In particular, they provide novel and powerful ways to culture cells, cell aggregates, and even functional models of entire organs. Nuclear magnetic resonance is a non-invasive, high-resolution spectroscopic technique which allows real-…
Use of semipermeable membrane devices for assessment of air quality in Tangier (Morocco)
2009
Semipermeable membrane devices (SPMDs) have been used for the evaluation of the contamination of air in both the urban and the industrial area in Tangier (Morocco). Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene a...
Synthesis, characterization, and hierarchical organization of tungsten oxide nanorods: spreading driven by Marangoni flow.
2009
Tungsten oxide nanorods were synthesized by a soft chemistry approach using tungsten alkoxide and trioctyl amine and oleic acid as the surfactants. The optical properties of the nanorods were studied. The nanorods were found to be soluble in a wide range of solvents like chloroform, cyclohexane, and so on. Upon solvent evaporation, the nanorods formed hierarchically organized solid state structures. Depending on the solvent used, the nanorods organized in different mesostructures. Moreover, the organization of the nanorods from mixtures of polar and nonpolar solvents was studied. Here, the Marangoni effect resulting from differences in the surface tensions of the two solvents was found to p…
Metabolic Status and Reaction to Heat of Normal and Tumor Tissue
1995
The occurrence of differential heating and differential thermal sensitivity between malignant tumors and normal tissues is thought to be due to limited heat dissipation and energy depletion in many solid tumors which in turn results from an inadequately functioning tumor microcirculation (Jain and Ward-Hartley 1984; Song 1984, 1991; Vaupel and Kallinowski 1987; Reinhold 1988; Vaupel et al. 1988a; Vaupel 1990). As a consequence of the latter pathophysiological condition, supply and drainage function are restricted in many solid tumors or, at least, in some tumor areas, thus creating a hostile metabolic microenvironment characterized by tissue hypoxia, acidosis, and energy depletion. Thermal …
Scope-Oriented Thermoeconomic analysis of energy systems. Part I: Looking for a non-postulated cost accounting for the dissipative devices of a vapou…
2010
Abstract The authors of the main thermoeconomic methodologies developed in the last two decades have recently focused their efforts on the analysis of dissipative devices, i.e. those components whose productive purpose is neither intuitive nor easy to define. Coherent and unanimously accepted cost structures have been identified for dissipative components, while ambiguities still exist as concerns the cost allocation principles to be adopted. Being this aspect evidently cost-influencing, accurate analyses focused on the subjectivity of results are needed. This paper is structured in two parts. In the Part I an in-depth study of some critical issues arising from the thermoeconomic analysis o…
Long-period grating assisted fractional differentiation of highly chirped light pulses
2016
We experimentally demonstrate the possibility to perform a fractional differentiation of arbitrary order on a given light pulse by propagation through a single long-period grating. A simple analytical expression is obtained also, relating the fractional order of differentiation with the parameters of the long-period grating. A secant hyperbolic like pulse of 23 ps time width with a chirp parameter of -30 was successfully fractionally differentiated to the 0.5th order. The proposal was corroborated experimentally and numerically. The device may find applications in real time phase recovery. Fil: Poveda Wong, L..
The Differential Relations between Perceived Social Support and Rumination-Associated Goals
2013
In this study with N = 93 student participants, we employed a daily process approach to investigate sadness-associated rumination in daily life. Specifically, we examined whether the attainment of coping-related goals that people intend to achieve with their sadness-associated rumination were associated with changes in perceived social support. Moreover, we investigated the relations between sadness-related cognitive appraisals, goal pursuit and attainment, and ruminative process variables. Perceived social support was positively related to the attainment of resolution-focused goals, but not to understanding-focused goals, suggesting that social support is particularly associated with a fun…
Querytogether : Enabling entity-centric exploration in multi-device collaborative search
2018
Collaborative and co-located information access is becoming increasingly common. However, fairly little attention has been devoted to the design of ubiquitous computing approaches for spontaneous exploration of large information spaces enabling co-located collaboration. We investigate whether an entity-based user interface provides a solution to support co-located search on heterogeneous devices. We present the design and implementation of QueryTogether, a multi-device collaborative search tool through which entities such as people, documents, and keywords can be used to compose queries that can be shared to a public screen or specific users with easy touch enabled interaction. We conducted…
