Server implementations for improving the performance of CAR systems based on mobile phones

2014

Collaborative Augmented Reality (CAR) systems allow multiple users to share a real world environment, including computer-generated images in real time. The hardware features of most current mobile phones include wireless network capabilities that offer a natural platform for CAR systems. However, the potential number of clients in CAR systems based on mobile phones is much larger than on CAR systems based on other kind of mobile devices, requiring a system design that takes into account scalability issues. This paper presents the experimental characterization of CAR systems based on mobile phones, providing quantitative results about well-known performance metrics in distributed systems. Th…

Data offloading and task allocation for cloudlet-assisted ad hoc mobile clouds

2016

Nowadays, although the data processing capabilities of the modern mobile devices are developed in a fast speed, the resources are still limited in terms of processing capacity and battery lifetime. Some applications, in particular the computationally intensive ones, such as multimedia and gaming, often require more computational resources than a mobile device can afford. One way to address such a problem is that the mobile device can offload those tasks to the centralized cloud with data centers, the nearby cloudlet or ad hoc mobile cloud. In this paper, we propose a data offloading and task allocation scheme for a cloudlet-assisted ad hoc mobile cloud in which the master device (MD) who ha…

Mobile Ontologies

2008

The number of mobile subscribers in the world is soon reaching the three billion mark. According to the newest estimates, majority of the subscribers are already in the developing countries, whereas the number of subscribers in the industrialized countries is about to stagnate around one billion. Because especially in the developing countries the only access to Internet are mobile devices, developing high quality services based on them grows in importance. Ontologies are an important ingredient towards more complicated mobile services and wider usage of mobile terminals. In this article, we first discuss ontology and epistemology concepts in general. After that, we review ontologies in the …

A holistic modeling for QoE estimation in live video streaming applications over LTE Advanced technologies with Full and Non Reference approaches

2018

Abstract Current mobile networks are providing high speed access to Internet at a rate of Gigabits per second. In this scenario, traditional services over wired networks are an alternative, in particular those based on live video streaming. But in the transition, different issues should be considered due to the rapid changing network conditions and the limited resources of the mobile devices. These issues should be taken into account to keep a good Quality of Experience (QoE) of the video in terms of a high Mean Opinion Score (MOS), a subjective video quality. Our goal is to estimate and predict this subjective metric in a holistic manner. Thus, we have analyzed and measured different varia…

An ontology-based recommendation system for people with autism and technology apps

2018

The research about the use of technology for persons with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) has rapidly increased in the last decade. This fact has accompanied with the sharp development and use of apps for mobile devices by these people and their caregivers. The election of the adequate apps for persons with autism is a very difficult task, with many variables involved with the person with ASD, the family, the practitioners and the community where they live. This paper describes a recommendation system that reuse an ontology, which supports the information about the apps and all the variables previously cited. The data about the apps are automatically obtained from recognized web repositorie…

Colorimetric Characterization of Mobile Devices for Vision Applications

2015

Purpose: Available applications for vision testing in mobile devices usually do not include detailed setup instructions, sacrificing rigor to obtain portability and ease of use. In particular, colorimetric characterization processes are generally obviated. We show that different mobile devices differ also in colorimetric profile and that those differences limit the range of applications for which they are most adequate. Methods: The color reproduction characteristics of four mobile devices, two smartphones (Samsung Galaxy S4, iPhone 4s) and two tablets (Samsung Galaxy Tab 3, iPad 4), have been evaluated using two procedures: 3D LUT (Look Up Table) and a linear model assuming primary constan…

Characteristics and Measures for Mobile-Masquerader Detection

2006

Personal mobile devices, as mobile phones, smartphones, and communicators can be easily lost or stolen. Due to the functional abilities of these devices, their use by an unintended person may result in a severe security incident concerning private or corporate data and services. Organizations develop their security policy and mobilize preventive techniques against unauthorized use. Current solutions, however, are still breakable and there still exists strong need for means to detect user substitution when it happens. A crucial issue in designing such means is to define what measures to monitor.

A Taxonomy for App-Enabled Devices: Mastering the Mobile Device Jungle

2018

While the term application is known for a long time, what we now refer to as mobile apps has facilitated task-oriented, interoperable software. The term was initially only used for smartphones and tablets, but desktop software now is also referred to as apps. More important than the wording, however, is the trend towards app-enablement of many further kinds of devices such as smart TVs and wearables. App-enabled devices usually share some characteristics and developing apps is often similar. However, many complexities must be mastered: Device fragmentation and cross-platform app development already are challenging when only considering smartphones. When trying to grasp the field as a whole,…

Evaluation of the Use of a City Center through the Use of Bluetooth Sensors Network

2019

In order to achieve the objectives of Smart Cities, public administrations need to take measures to regulate mobility, which undoubtedly requires a high level of information and sensorization. Until the implementation of the connected vehicle takes place, it is still necessary to install sensors to obtain information about mobility. Bluetooth sensors are becoming a useful tool due to the low cost of equipment and installation. The use of Bluetooth sensors in cities, with short distances between sensors, makes it necessary to propose new classification algorithms that allow the trips of pedestrians and vehicles to be differentiated. This article presents the study carried out in the city of …

WSN Design and Verification Using On-Board Executable Specifications

2019

The gap between informal functional specifications and the resulting implementation in the chosen programming language is notably a source of errors in embedded systems design. In this paper, we discuss a methodology and a software platform aimed at coping with this issue in programming resource-constrained wireless sensor network nodes (WSNs). Whereas the typical development model for the WSNs is based on cross compilation, the proposed approach supports high-level symbolic coding of abstract models and distributed applications, as well as their test and their execution, directly on the target hardware. As a working example, we discuss the application of our methodology to specify the func…
