La costruzione tian (tun) + infinito nel dialetto tedesco di Merano*
2012
This article deals with the 'do-support' phenomenon in the German Tyrolean dialect spoken in Merano/Meran (Northern Italy). We show that it is used in various contexts, which do not correspond to the contexts in which English resorts to do-support. In some of these contexts the do-support is obligatory, while in others it is optional.
Gwara w twórczości nowej fali prozaików śląskich. Wojciech Kuczok i Szczepan Twardoch
2016
Wojciech Kuczok and Szczepan Twardoch are prominent writers of Silesian origins. Their opuses, in particular Kuczok’s Gnój and Twardoch’s Drach occupy prized place in modern Polish literature. Both authors apply native dialect in their literary works. Regarding the subject of their works and the use of linguistic materiał it is impossible to separate the conclusions from the analysis from the perennial discussions about the culture and Silesian language. The literary output of both authors inscribe in the above mentioned discourse. Thus the linguacultural picture, presented as a part of world depicted in their works, is very important. For many readers from outside Silesia, Kuczok and Tward…
Arnold Bennett, Giovanni Verga, David Herbert Lawrence. Transitional realism, translation and dialect
2012
This work investigates the relationship between translation, tran- sition and realism in connection with the development of di- alectal forms, the concept of city and travel images in late-nine- teenth-century literary production in Europe, with particular em- phasis on French, English and Italian realist literature. The process of transiting, which entails a mechanism of transformation resulting in innovation and change, is common in translation, realist literature, travel, and dialect as a linguistic break with stan- dard language. If translation is a system of transferring meaning from one set of language signs into another set of language signs, realism in literature is par excellence t…

A dialectal reading of the History of Translation
2013
The translation of dialect is one of the most difficult and yet interesting challenges facing literary translators. Although theoretical contributions about dialect translation develop mainly from 1960, this article proposes a historical reading of the history of translation from antiquity to the first half of the 20th century, inquiring about the “implications” that the milestones of translation might have had on the translation of dialect. Since dialect texts are conceived within a political hierarchy of language, a parallelism is established between ‘dialect-standard’ and ‘vernacular language-dominant language’. The emergence of terms and practices relevant for dialect translation (forei…
L'expressió de les hores en català : anàlisi contrastiva
2001
What time is it? Prefaced by this question, this paper investigates a number of ways to express the time in Catalan from a dialectal and pragmatic perspectiva. In this article, all dialectal varieties of the two main ways to tell the time (one based on the next hour, i.e. “one quarter of nine”, and the other based on the current hour, i.e. “eight and a quarter”) from the data from 190 locations surveyed for the Atles Lingüístic del Domini Català are described. The results of this analysis are compared to descriptive and normative proposals: grammars, style manuals, dictionaries, and other information sources. Finally, we give an account of the decline or the success of the two ways to tell …
