Prediction error signal correlates with fluid intelligenceand dopamine synthesis across the lifespan
2011
IntroductionFluid intelligence expresses the capacity for interpretation of novel stimuli and flexible behavioral adaptation to such cues. Phasic dopamine firing closely matches a temporal difference prediction error (PE) signal important for learning and rapid behavioral adaptation. Both fluid intelligence and dopaminergic neurotransmission decline with age. So far, no study investigated the relationship between fluid IQ, PE signal and direct measures of dopaminergic neurotransmission. Here we used a multimodal imaging approach that combines positron emission tomography and functional magnetic resonance imaging.MethodsA group of healthy controls was investigated with both 6-[18F]FluoroDOPA…

The present study aims to conduct Polish adaptation and validation of the Authorized Bratman Orthorexia Self-Test (ABOST), throug…
Dynamic Force Production Capacities Between Coronary Artery Disease Patients vs. Healthy Participants on a Cycle Ergometer
2020
Background: The force-velocity-power (FVP) profile is used to describe dynamic force production capacities, which is of great interest in training high performance athletes. However, FVP may serve a new additional tool for cardiac rehabilitation (CR) of coronary artery disease (CAD) patients. The aim of this study was to compare the FVP profile between two populations: CAD patients vs. healthy participants (HP). Methods: Twenty-four CAD patients (55.8 ± 7.1 y) and 24 HP (52.4 ± 14.8 y) performed two sprints of 8 s on a Monark cycle ergometer with a resistance corresponding to 0.4 N/kg × body mass for men and 0.3 N/kg × body mass for women. The theoretical maximal force (F 0) and velocity (V…
AGE DIFFERENCES IN THE ACUTE STRESS EFFECTS ON DECLARATIVE MEMORY PERFORMANCE
2021
"In the last decades, there has been a growing interest in knowing the effects of acute stress on memory performance, particularly declarative memory. Research on this topic suggests that age is a crucial individual factor to consider in the stress-memory link. However, most of the evidence has been obtained from studies conducted in young people and, surprisingly, studies in older people are scarce. Thus, our aim was to investigate the age differences in the acute stress effects on declarative memory performance. To do this, we directly compared the effects of a psychosocial acute stressor (i.e. Trier Social Stress Test) on learning, consolidation and memory retrieval performance in two ag…
Motor asymmetry attenuation in older adults during imagined arm movements
2014
International audience; Laterality is an important feature of motor behavior. Several studies have shown that lateralization in right-handed young adults (i.e., right versus left arm superiority) emerges also during imagined actions, that is when an action is internally simulated without any motor output. Such information, however, is lacking for elderly people and it could be valuable to further comprehend the evolution of mental states of action in normal aging. Here, we evaluated the influence of age on motor laterality during mental actions. Twenty-four young (mean age: 24.7 +/- 4.4 years) and 24 elderly (mean age: 72.4 +/- 3.6 years) participants mentally simulated and actually execute…
Efficacy of sublingual immunotherapy with grass allergens for seasonal allergic rhinitis: A systematic review and meta-analysis
2010
Background The benefit of sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) with grass allergens for seasonal allergic rhinitis has been extensively studied, but data on efficacy are still equivocal. Objective To assess the effectiveness of SLIT with grass allergens in the reduction of symptoms and medication in patients with seasonal allergic rhinitis to grass pollen. Methods Computerized bibliographic searches of MEDLINE (1995-2010) were supplemented by hand searches of reference lists. Studies were included if they were double-blind randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing SLIT to placebo and if they included patients with history of allergy to grass pollen treated with natural grass pollen extracts.…
Striato-amygdaloid transition area lesions reduce the duration of tonic immobility in the lizard Podarcis hispanica.
2002
Neuroanatomical data suggest that the lizard striato-amygdaloid transition area is homologous with the mammalian central amygdala. In order to investigate possible functional similarities, tonic immobility was induced in adult lizards and its duration recorded. Each lizard was then randomly assigned to one of three treatments: (1) bilateral striato-amygdaloid transition area lesions, (2) bilateral dorsal cortex lesions or (3) untreated controls. Three days after trial 1, each lizard was subjected to a second trial and the tonic immobility duration recorded. The mean tonic immobility duration in lizards with striato-amygdaloid transition area lesions was significantly shorter (80.5%; p < 0.0…
Clinically meaningful FEV1 response with reslizumab achieved early and sustained over 52 weeks
2017
Background: Reslizumab (RES) is a humanized anti-interleukin-5 monoclonal antibody that significantly reduces the risk of asthma exacerbations and improves asthma control, lung function, and quality of life in patients with uncontrolled eosinophilic asthma. The mean difference in FEV 1 in RES treated patients vs placebo (PBO) at 16 and 52 weeks has been shown to be statistically and clinically significant (Castro et al., Lancet Respir Med. 2015; 3:355–366), but individual responders have not been assessed. Aims/Objectives: To assess the proportion of RES-treated patients who achieved a ≥0.1L increase in FEV 1 from baseline and the duration of treatment before response occurs. Methods: This …
Agreement between 2 swept-source OCT biometers and a Scheimpflug partial coherence interferometer
2020
PURPOSE To evaluate the agreement between different parameters obtained with 2 swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT)-based biometers and 1 Scheimpflug camera with partial coherence interferometry (PCI). SETTING Single center, Oftalvist, Alicante, Spain. DESIGN Prospective case series. METHODS Biometry was performed in 49 eyes using 3 optical biometers: ANTERION SS-OCT, IOLMaster 700 SS-OCT, and Pentacam AXL PCI. Keratometry (K), J0 and J45 vectors, anterior chamber depth (ACD), central corneal thickness (CCT), white-to-white (WTW), lens thickness (LT), and axial length (AL) were measured with each device. Bland-Altman analysis was applied. RESULTS This study comprises 49 eyes o…
Efficacy of proteolytic enzyme bromelain on health outcomes after third molar surgery. Systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical tri…
2019
Background Bromelain is a cysteine protease isolated from pineapple with a range of biological properties including platelet aggregation inhibition and anti-inflammatory effects. Recent studies have evaluated the clinical implications of bromelain in reducing postoperative inflammatory complications after third molar surgery, but the results are contrasting. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the effects of bromelain on health outcomes in patients submitted to third molar surgery. Material and Methods The study was conducted following the PRISMA statement. Searches were conducted in six electronic databases and Google Scholar from inception to May 2018. The following element…
