Base Excess and Strong Ion Difference: Clinical Limitations Related to Inaccuracy
2004
A circular mesh scheme for the non-orthogonal finite difference time domain method
2002
Beam forming networks (BFN) are an important component of a complex satellite antenna system because they are used to provide accurate amplitude and phase excitation to the elements of the feed network. The need for handling high power and the need for a high degree of integrability, often leads one to choose square coaxial metal lines for constructing BFNs. BFNs usually require variable power dividers such as the rat-race (or ring) couplers with constant or variable divider ratios in order to deliver a prescribed amount of power to a certain element of an antenna array to steer the beam in a desired direction. However, modeling of such circular structures in square coaxial form is not an e…
Electromagnetic Sensitivity Analysis and Shape Optimization Using Method of Moments and Automatic Differentiation
2009
Sensitivity analysis is an important part of gradient-based optimization of electromagnetic devices. We demonstrate how sensitivity analysis can be incorporated into an existing in-house method of moments solver with a relatively small amount of labor by using a technique called automatic differentiation (AD). This approach enables us to obtain (geometrical) sensitivities of the discrete solution with accuracy up to numerical precision. We compare the assembly time and memory usage of the modified and original solvers. Moreover, we optimize the shape of a dipole antenna and the dimensions of a Yagi-Uda array using the presented AD technique, traditional response level finite difference sens…
Maladaptive and adaptive emotion regulation through music a behavioral and neuroimaging study of males and females
2015
Music therapists use guided affect regulation in the treatment of mood disorders. However, self-directed uses of music in affect regulation are not fully understood. Some uses of music may have negative effects on mental health, as can non music regulation strategies, such as rumination. Psychological testing and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) were used explore music listening strategies in relation to mental health. Participants (n = 123) were assessed for depression, anxiety and Neuroticism, and uses of Music in Mood Regulation (MMR). Neural responses to music were measured in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) in a subset of participants (n = 56). Discharge, using music to…
In Silico Shear and Intramural Stresses are Linked to Aortic Valve Morphology in Dilated Ascending Aorta
2017
Objective/Background: The development of ascending aortic dilatation in patients with bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) is highly variable, and this makes surgical decision strategies particularly challenging. The purpose of this study was to identify new predictors, other than the well established aortic size, that may help to stratify the risk of aortic dilatation in BAV patients. Methods: Using fluid-structure interaction analysis, both haemodynamic and structural parameters exerted on the ascending aortic wall of patients with either BAV ( n = 21) or tricuspid aortic valve (TAV; n = 13) with comparable age and aortic diameter (42.7 +/- 5.3 mm for BAV and 45.4 +/- 10.0 mm for TAV) were compared…
A comparison of the Canon TX-20P™ non-contact tonometer and pachymeter in healthy eyes
2012
Background: The aim of this study was to compare the intraocular pressure (IOP) and the central corneal thickness (CCT) measurements obtained with the Canon TX-20P™ with IOP measured with Goldmann applanation tonometer (GAT) and the CCT measured with ultrasound (US) pachymetry in healthy eyes. Methods: Thirty one healthy voluntary subjects participated in the study, age ranging from 16 to 81 years (mean age 50.9 years). In total 58 eyes were selected for analysis. All measurements were performed by the same examiner. The measurements were taken in the same order in all subjects: Canon IOP and CCT, Goldmann IOP and US CCT. Results: A strong correlation was found between IOP for both CCT comp…
Calculation of the pH and the titratable acidity in clinically used infusion solutions.
2006
Clinically used infusion solutions are complex aqueous mixtures composed of a variety of different salts, acids, and non-electrolytes, and are characterized by composition, initial pH, and titratable acidity (TA). By rigorous treatment as a multi-composed acid-base system, pH and TA were calculated from proton dissociation equilibria, mass balance equations and electroneutrality condition. Nine were arbitrarily chosen as model solutions in which pH and TA were experimentally determined. From composition, and based on a set of apparent acidity constants (pK values) at 37 degrees C and total ionic strength 0.155 mol/l, pH was calculated by iteration. In the model solutions, measured pH was in…
Feasibility of hyperspectral vegetation indices for the detection of chlorophyll concentration in three high Arctic plants: Salix polaris, Bistorta v…
2018
Remote sensing, which is based on a reflected electromagnetic spectrum, offers a wide range of research methods. It allows for the identification of plant properties, e.g., chlorophyll, but a registered signal not only comes from green parts but also from dry shoots, soil, and other objects located next to the plants. It is, thus, important to identify the most applicable remote-acquired indices for chlorophyll detection in polar regions, which play a primary role in global monitoring systems but consist of areas with high and low accessibility. This study focuses on an analysis of in situ-acquired hyperspectral properties, which was verified by simultaneously measuring the chlorophyll conc…
Impact of recent climate change in the Arctic on snow physical parameters retrieval using SAR data (Svalbard)
2019
International audience; Arctic snow cover dynamics exhibit strong changes in terms of extent and duration due to recent climate changeconditions (Mudryk et al., 2018; Lemke & Jacobi, 2011). In this context, innovative observation methods arehelpful for a better comprehension of the role of the snow for climate research and hydrology. The spatialvariability of snow properties is here addressed for the Ny-Ålesund area, Svalbard (N 78◦55’ / E 11◦55’) usingsatellite radar images in the X-band. This remote sensing method removes the limitations and ambiguities ofoptical imaging limited by the polar night and cloud cover. This study contributes to the “Precip-A2” project (OSUG@2020, Grenoble, Fran…
