Nuclear Magnetic Resonance investigation of PVA-GTA FRicke gel dosimeters exposed to clinical photon beams

2016

Fricke Xylenol Gel (FXG) dosimetric system is based on the radiation induced oxidation of ferrous (Fe2+) to ferric (Fe3+) ions. The application of Fricke gels for ionizing radiation dosimetry is continuously increasing worldwide due to their many favorable properties. However, one of their shortcomings is that ferrous and ferric ions diffuse in the gel matrix. To maintain the spatial integrity of the dose distribution, Fricke gels must be undergoing measurement within a few hours of their irradiation, so that ferric ions remain close to their point of production. Thus, the spatial integrity of the dose distribution in the Fricke gel is maintained. The gel matrix also contributes to the oxid…

Near-Infrared emission of O2 embedded in amorphous SiO2 nanoparticles

2011

We report an experimental study on the emission properties of O2 molecules loaded by a thermal diffusion process at 200 °C into high-purity silica nanoparticles with mean diameters of 7 and 40 nm. The embedded O2 features a singlet to triplet emission band peaked at 1272 nm in agreement with the band observed for bulk silica materials. The photoluminescence excitation spectra have been determined in the visible and in the infrared range and are characterized by narrow bands peaked at 691, 764,and 1069 nm, respectively. By comparison of the transition energies, the vibrational quanta have been determined for the ground and for both the excited states; the values found are lower than the corr…

A computational study of point defects and diffusion in enstatite

2009

In order to contribute to the understanding of diffusion processes in enstatite (Mg2Si2O6), we have used atomistic simulation techniques to study point defects in this mineral. We present results for a variety of Scottky and Frenkel defects of all atomic species present in it. We have furthermore calculated the activation energy for magnesium diffusion. We break diffusion down into a succession of hops between neighboring sites. Each hop is associated with a migration energy barrier. By making a series of hops, the diffusing ion may cross the unit cell. The maximum migration energy necessary to attain movement in a direction is the activation energy for diffusion in that direction. The defe…

Computational study of defects in ideal phengite

2009

Phengite is the name of a series designating the “potassic dioctahedral micas between, or close to, the joins muscovite-aluminoceladonite and muscovite-celadonite” (Rieder et al. 1998). These micas play a important role in most petrogenetic reactions occurring in high-pressure (HP) metamorphic environments; they are useful geothermobarometers and participate in reactions as H2O carriers in the subduction zone. In this work we have employed atomistic simulations techniques to model defects, evaluate the most stable defect species and determine the most likely diffusion mechanism in crystals. We have calculated the defect formation energies for vacancies, impurities and interstitials, Frenkel…

Experimental investigation and modelling for sulphuric acid recovery by diffusion dialysis

2018

Sulphuric acid is known to be one of the key inorganic acid and has been widely used in chemical reaction and metal industries for surface treatments as in the copper electroplating process. During these processes, large amounts of waste sulphuric acid solution are generally generated, containing high concentrations of metals and acid. The possibility of recover and reuse the sulphuric acid in the process could avoid environmental contamination and reduce costs of the disposal. Among several separation methods, diffusion dialysis (DD) is becoming more and more attractive thanks to the recent important advances in ion exchange membranes (IEMs) field and because of its clean nature and operat…

Diffusion dialysis for the treatment of H2SO4-CuSO4 solutions from electroplating plants: Ions membrane transport characterization and modelling

2021

Diffusion dialysis (DD) is proposed to separate and recover mineral acids and transition metals from electroplating industry process waters promoting a circular approach of resources recovery. In this work, a DD module with two anionic membranes (Fumasep FAD and Neosepta AFN) are used for the separation of H2SO4 from Cu2+ containing solutions. The membrane performances with sole H2SO4 solutions (0.2–2 M) and sole CuSO4 solutions (0.8–1.1 M Cu2+) and with mixtures of H2SO4 (0.6 M) and CuSO4 (0.2–1.1 M Cu2+) as feed are studied. H2SO4 recovery efficiency decreases as the concentration of acid increases. For H2SO4 solutions, the water drag flux from the retentate to the diffusate prevails agai…

Economic Benefits of Waste Pickling Solution Valorization

2022

An integrated hybrid membrane process, composed of a diffusion dialysis (DD), a membrane distillation (MD) and a reactive precipitation unit (CSTR), is proposed as a promising solution for the valorization and onsite recycling of pickling waste streams. An economic analysis was performed aiming to demonstrate the feasibility of the developed process with a NPV of about EUR 40,000 and a DPBP of 4 years. The investment and operating costs, as well as the avoided costs and the benefits for the company operating the plant, were analyzed with an extensive cost tracking exercise and through face-to-face contact with manufacturers and sector leaders. A mathematical model was implemented using the …

Noise Filtering Using Edge-Driven Adaptive Anisotropic Diffusion

2008

This paper presents a method aimed to noise removal in MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging). We propose an improvement of Perona and Malik's anisotropic diffusion filter. In our schema, the diffusion equation of the filter has been modified to take into account the edges direction, This allows the filter to blur uniform areas, while it better preserves the edges. Both quantitative and qualitative evaluation is presented and the results are compared with other methods.
