Corporate online presence : a study of eight Finnish exporting companies' corporate websites
2012
Metaphoric Conceptualization of Social Reality in the Language of News Media
2021
Today, social reality can hardly be viewed as the one-state-one-nationone language ideological framework (Bauman and Briggs, 2003). The modern multilingual and multicultural communities are inclined to examine social reality in a multiple variety of socio-economic and political manifestations and forms. To understand how social reality can be explored through examining certain socio-political processes in a country, the present paper aims at analysing the role of conceptual metaphor in cases when political scandals, involving corruption charges of high-ranking officials in Latvia are considered. For this purpose, the present study has focused on the analysis of selected commentaries that de…
One confession, multiple chronotopes : The interdiscursive authentication of an apology in an international criminal trial
2021
This paper presents an interdiscursive analysis of a public apology made before the International Criminal Court (ICC) by a Malian Islamist accused of the destruction of cultural heritage in Timbuktu. It analyzes (a) how the defendant's apology metapragmatically inserts itself into a multiplicity of chronotopes and (b) how the two defense counsels subsequently reformulate that apology as part of a ‘confessional chronotope’, thereby decoupling it from its immediate trial surroundings. The entextualization of this confessional chronotope, and the modifications of the trial's participation framework it proposes, reveal how ICC trial actors navigate the multiple tensions facing this emergent fo…

The conjoint conceptualization and negotiation of national cultures : qualitative study of discursive culture-concepts, their function and their rela…
2015
The study of stereotypes and stereotyping is as complex and multi-facetted as the social phenomenon itself. From being seen as an erroneous and over-generalizing image in the mind of individuals, to the current perspective that stereotypes have an individual and a social level, are shaped by long-term and short-term contextual factors, and are used for certain purposes, managed and negotiated, stereotypes have been acknowledged as a topic which cannot be studied within one academic discipline alone. This study looks into stereotype use and management during in-group discourse about other national cultures. The data consists of three focus groups consisting of Finnish students who talk about…
From intensive car-parenting to enabling childhood velonomy? Explaining parents’ representations of children’s leisure mobilities
2023
Intensive parenting has become a key term for analysing the pressures and priorities of contemporary western parenting culture. For mobility studies it provides a discursive framework for understanding why children’s leisure has shifted from free play and mobility towards various adult-led organised activities and why parents deem it necessary to control children’s leisure journeys in an unprecedented manner. Most of the research on parenting and mobility has explained these trends with urban risks and safeguarding, but this paper highlights how parents also control, manage and enable children’s mobility to resource and enrich them with various dispositions. We use children’s mobility exper…
"Sam meets Alicia, falls in love, gets her pregnant, and starts having doubts" : dating and sex in English high school textbooks
2015
Tutkimusmetodina on Jam…
Peaceful Foreign Policy and Remembrance of War Effort : The Conceptualisation of Willingness to Defend in Finland and Its Connections to Previous Arm…
2022
In Finland, a conceptualization of willingness to defend has been a traditional part of the defence-related debates and the state has vested interests to maintain the high level of willingness. This paper examines the connections to the Second World War in political discourse related to willingness to defend. Based on the analysis of political and societal debates, I will demonstrate that the Second World War serves as an historical experience for the understanding of the concept by offering an idea of individual sacrifice relevant to the survival of the state, as a prime example. peerReviewed
