Genre contextualisation and rhetorical organisation aspects in english written communication for information technologies

2014

In this research the interest was to understand the discursive formation of educational equality in political texts concerning the national core curriculum in Finland in the beginning of 2010s. The research problem was to describe and analyze discourses of educational equality and to analyze who are portrayed as actors of educational equality. All-inclusiveness in Legal Language. Cross-Cultural Perspectives in Specialized Discourse

2008

This book explores recent theoretical and practical changes in the investigation of language and context, with a particular attention to legal language as a highly specialized discourse. Given the huge variety of human experiences, any approach to language cannot be solely conducted at the level of grammatical rules and structures, but at the level of social contexts and contextual backgrounds as well. In fact, important form-function correlations are discovered when lexico-grammatical investigations are supported by sociocultural and psycho-cognitive enquires about the way in which textual artefacts (and, particularly, specialized texts) are conventionally and linguistically organized and …

“Who are the ladies?” : women’s representation and identity construction in the HBO series ‘Girls’

2015

This research paper examines the representations and identities constructed in the HBO television series 'Girls', which is considered one of the most groundbreaking television series of recent years due to its realistic and diverse female characters. In this paper, I analyse relevant examples from the first season of the series. The analysis is based on Critical Discourse Studies and various theories of gender and language. The main focus is not only on the linguistic construction of representations and identities, but also on multimodality. In addition to analysing how these linguistic and multimodal features affect representation, it is also considered how the series challenges today's no…

Multimodal discourse strategies of factuality and subjectivity in educational digital storytelling

2012

As new technologies continue to emerge, students and lecturers are provided with new educational tools. One such tool, which is increasingly used in higher education, is digital storytelling, i.e. multi-media digital narratives. Despite the increasing attention that education and media scholars have paid to digital storytelling, there is scant research examining digital narratives from a discourseanalytic perspective. This paper addresses this gap in the literature and, in line with the belief that individuals make meaning through a range of semiotic devices, including, among others, language, sound, graphics and text, it aims to examine discourse strategies of factuality and subjectivity i…

Defectivitat morfològica i variació sintàctica

2021

This paper discusses a case of parametric variation between Catalan and Spanish that concerns the fronting possibilities within the CP domain (the so-called ÇLeft PeripheryÈ). In particular, attention is paid to Catalan’s weak left peripheral activity, which prevents it from generating sentences that involve a Çmild focalizationÈ pattern very common in Spanish (e.g., «Mucha tontería dice el Gobierno» vs. *«Molta ximpleria diuel Govern»), first noted by Torrego (1980) and further explored by Uriagereka (1988). Interestingly, the same behavior is observed in the v*P domain, which accounts for the fact that VSO sentences (generated through movement of the subject to a specifier position, as Or…

Del present imperfecte i dels futurs de probabilitat, o entorn de la filologia, la lingüística, l'anàlisi crítica del discurs i les ciències de la co…

2005

What is the aim today of talking about philology, either in absolute terms or related to other concepts such as linguistics or language sciences? On the one hand, it seems unfair to resort to metaphors that pair (traditional) philology and (textual) necrophilia. On the other hand, turning our back on the reality is not the appropriate response to current problems: a more applied training (in the professional field) is needed, and (in the scientific context) the frontiers should be pushed back, because the old ones are obsolete and in need of reappraisal. Faced with a past and a present that are inevitably imperfect, this article is a reflection on the chances of a future in which philology …

A cognitive-based approach to President Obama’s educational discourse through the lens of his State of the Union Addresses (2009-2016)

2017

In order to gain a cultural understanding of the discourse on education used by President Obama, this article examines the source domains commonly used to refer to education in his State of the Union Addresses, from the time he took office in 2009 to 2016 when he will leave office. The study will proceed by applying insights from Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT), within the field of cognitive linguistics, supplemented by the Metaphor Identification Procedure (MIP) developed by the Pragglejazz Group. The source domains identified and discussed are: COMPETITION and ECONOMICS. In fact, the strong coherence in Obama’s speeches relies on the use of the story of competition as the concept that is…
